Overheat Risk Makes Sony Recall Vaio TZ Laptops
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:08 PM on September 4, 2008
Sony's issuing a recall for Vaio TZ laptops sold between May 2007 and July 2008: apparently there's a risk of overheating leading to "abnormal heat deformation of the enclosure"—which sounds like a lot more than the usual knee-burn heat of a laptop. It's not due to the battery, mind you, rather it seems like a manufacturing flaw related to the power connector and LCD frame. The news relates so far to just Japanese machines, with Sony offering free inspection and repair, but keep your eyes peeled for news of the problem in other countries. [PCWatch]

Thank goodness. For a second I thought it said FZ. In which case I'd be screwed.

Happened to one of my clients TZ's last week... totally melted corner of PC next to power connector, and frame of LCD. Could have burnt the house down! I feel a phonecall to Sony UK customer services coming on......

Huuh?
As a rule, I avoid Sony laptops like the plague... Ive had no end of them just die in rather terminal and spectacular ways.. Ive also had loads of DOA's.. I just wish people would buy something else for me to fix/set up!

@Rojaws: I've always wondered how people decided upon the phrase "avoid like the plague", since, the plague was something not easily avoided, and the people who contracted it didn't really make the choice to avoid or accept it in the first place.
But yes, we should avoid Sony laptops like the clap.

Haha and if you actually go to the Sony eSupport website and click on their link to identify if your laptop is one of the said affected models you get redirected to [sonycisc.updatemytv.com] and shown a nice white blank page with "This is a test."
