Official: New Zune Lineup Packs More Storage, Wi-Fi Downloads
Posted by John Mahoney at 4:52 AM on September 9, 2008
CNet spotted Microsoft jumping the gun today to avoid running into you know who: Microsoft has gone ahead and rolled out details on the new Zune lineup we've been hearing about a day early. And it's what we've known all along: a storage bump up to 120GB for hard drive models, and an 8GB/16GB choice for flash. And the Zune 3.0 software (available to all September 16) will have the new features we've seen, including recommendations, new games (including Texas Hold 'em), and a Wi-Fi music store for downloading from hotspots with your Zune Pass (finally). Pricing is also exactly as we've reported: US$250 for the 120GB, and US$150/US$200 for the flash, with reductions down the line for the current (as of earlier today) models. Definitely no surprises, considering some folks have already bought new 120GB Zunes. Read on for the full press release.
Zune Takes Music Discovery to the Next Level With New Ways to Find and Access Digital Music
Software update will enable Zune users to tag songs and buy music directly from FM radio and download and stream music on the go beginning Sept. 16.
REDMOND, Wash. -- Sept. 8, 2008 -- Zune, Microsoft Corp.'s end-to-end music and entertainment service, again revolutionizes how customers discover and connect to the music they love, where and how they want it. Starting next week, every Zune portable media player will let consumers wirelessly download or stream millions of songs on the go from thousands of wireless hot spots around the country. Free, powerful software and firmware updates will give Zune owners the ability to discover, tag and purchase songs directly from the built-in FM radio, wirelessly access the Zune Marketplace store on the go, and tap into interactive, personalised music recommendations that add even more value to the Zune Pass subscription. Zune is also expanding its device lineup with new 16GB and 120GB capacities as well as shiny new blue-on-silver and sleek all-black colour schemes. The new features will begin rolling out on Sept. 16, 2008.
"Digital music services really come alive when they help people find not only the music they know they like, but the music they didn't know they would love," said Chris Stephenson, general manager of Global Marketing for Zune at Microsoft. "With the combination of subscription, wireless access to millions of tracks, and powerful discovery features like personal recommendations and the ability to buy music from FM radio, Zune is taking the digital music experience to the next level."
Wireless Connections
More than 61 percent of people say they discover new music by listening to the radio.1 With that in mind, Zune is taking advantage of the wireless connection and the built-in FM tuner to deliver a new feature called Buy from FM, which lets customers tag and purchase songs they hear on FM radio stations2 directly from the Zune device. When the customer is in a Wi-Fi hot spot, the song can be immediately downloaded to the Zune device. If Wi-Fi is not available, the device will have a queue of songs ready to download when connected to a home computer or in a hot spot. Buy from FM uses Radio Data System and RT+ data feeds within the FM broadcast frequencies that identify song and artist data and enable the Zune service to identify and deliver the track to the customer.
In addition, users can now access the Zune Marketplace music store directly from their device when they are in a recognised Wi-Fi hot spot, or through a home wireless network. To make it easy to discover music on the go, customers can browse lists of featured new releases and top songs and albums sorted by genre, or use the on-screen keypad to type in the song of their choice. Once they have picked a track or album, they can either download it or stream it directly to the Zune device.
Zune customers have a choice in how they acquire music: They can pay per track or choose a Zune Pass subscription. Zune Pass subscribers can download or stream music to the device or their computer interchangeably, all for a flat rate of $14.99 per month. So whether a device has 4 GB or 120 GB of storage, Zune Pass customers can access and stream millions of songs directly to their Zune.
More Ways to Discover Music: Channels and Picks
The new Zune software update taps expert sources, recommendations from the Zune service and online music community, and the user's own play data to create a dynamic, digital music experience where discovering music is easy and seamless.
• Channels. Channels are an exciting new tool for music discovery. Customers can explore channels programmed by experts from the music industry such as the Billboard Top 100, The FADER magazine and KEXP radio, in addition to workout-themed channels tailored for high, medium and low impact, and top chart channels from all genres and subgenres. The powerful Zune software will even create custom channels for each user, based on favourite artists and genres. Channels are included with a monthly Zune Pass subscription and can be synced to the device for playback on the go. For non-Zune Pass subscribers, the Channels are available for a la carte purchase.
• Personal Picks. Now the Zune software learns what kind of music users like and makes personal recommendations. When users log onto Zune Marketplace, they'll find a new area called Picks where the Zune recommendation algorithm will suggest artists, albums and tracks based on the music they have been listening to, as well as channels they might like and listeners like them in the Zune Social.
• The Zune Social online music community. Customers can connect with millions of like-minded fans and share music via the Zune Card, a real-time playlist of each user's favourite and recently played tracks that can be accessed on the Web or within the Zune software, or synced to the Zune device. Zune Pass subscribers can play full tracks from Zune Cards synced to their device while on the go, and now the playlists will even automatically update with the most recently played tracks when Zune connects to a wireless hot spot. It's like subscribing to a free feed of music from the sources people trust most -- their friends.
Powerful Software
The Zune PC software is a free download at http://www.zune.net that provides rich discovery and media management capabilities to help consumers make the most of their existing music collections, in addition to providing access to the Zune Social and Zune Marketplace so they can add to it.
• Mixview. Customers can select an artist, album or Zune Card to activate a dynamic, visual mosaic of related music and listeners. With each click users can take the view in a new direction, creating a fun, graphical way to discover new music. Mixview works with users' current collection of music, in addition to tracks and albums from across the Zune Marketplace.
• Now Playing. The improved Now Playing view is more interactive and cinematic. Users can sit back and enjoy the combination of great artist imagery, colorful effects, bio information and data from the Zune online music community, all combined in a full-screen view. They can also click to dive deeper into the music behind the picture, providing another great way to interact with their collection.
A new firmware update will also improve the experience on the Zune device. In addition to the new wireless functionality, Zune will bring new features customers have been asking for:
• Games on the go. Two free games, "Hexic" and "Texas Hold 'Em," will keep users entertained on the go.
• Audiobooks. All Zune devices will feature support for audiobooks this fall from industry leaders in the digital distribution of audiobook content.
- Audible. Customers can visit audible.com to download and sync favourite books from the 50,000 titles available from over 600 publishers and content providers.
- OverDrive. They can download content from sites powered by overdrive.com, including 7,500 libraries' Web sites worldwide. (http://search.overdrive.com)

I wouldn't buy a Zune--I am clearly in the iPod/iPhone camp--but this is the first time I read about a Zune upgrade and I thought there were a couple of things that would appeal to me.
I don't know what Microsoft could do to make me switch from the iPod ecosystem. It's a tough place for Microsoft to be in because in a way it is too late since a new cool feature here and there is not enough. And the iPhone which, despite the horific quality issues, is still light years ahead of the competitors.
In a way, Microsoft may be fighting this battle a tad bit too late.
On the other hand, all Apple has to do to make me switch AWAY from their ecosystem is keep shipping beta quality software and shoddy hardware.
This should be Apple's decade, and they are running the risk of totally blowing it by shipping crappy quality products.

I'm buying a 120GB tomorrow (unless the 80GB Zune gets a real decent price drop) or Apple cuts the price down on the 16GB iPod Touch to the 200-250$ range.

I wonder what will happen to the old 80 gig zunes sitting on store shelves. I might be tempted to get one if they are aggressively marked down. I don't really need the extra space...besides my 80g ipod video died on me after only two years, so I'm sure as hell not going to buy another overpriced paper weight.

My Sansa Connect finally ate it about 3 months back, so I picked up the Zune 4GB flash. I like it, but miss the Wi-Fi radio, and the EQ (wasn't so great on the Connect, but it was better than nothing.) I really wasn't sold on the Zune till I got into the store, than after some Emo Associate tried to convince me on the iPod, I realized I didn't want to carry around something with such a stigma attached. Apple Fanbois already sold me a Zune and I love it. Might give this one to the wife if the new ones coming out support some type of Wi-Fi radio.

Say whatcha want, but the Zune DOES fill a spot that Apple really doesn't have. Expanding the WiFi functionality further beyond the hokey and underwhelming sharing feature further adds insult to the classic. Newer iPods are going to have to get into the wireless game a bit harder below the iPhone/touch.
As of now, the jury's out on the iPod stuff. If the new lines below the touch don't add anything, Apple is officially letting its lower cost items wither on the vine.

@DAK: I second the question. I have the old 30GB 1st Gen, and I was thrilled when they supported the firmware upgrade for the 1st Gen. I really want more space for songs/movies/podcasts (my collection is waaaaay over 30 GB and I can never choose what to take off) but I can't afford a new player. At least I can hope to have the sweet new features. The Mixview looks like it's something like Last.fm recommended songs/artists, and I love that for building good playlists.
One more feature I'd love - being able to build/save/edit playlists directly on the Zune. It can't be *that* hard to incorporate into the firmware, can it?

@surfjim: You're right on that, but at the same time, not everyone wants FM radio either. Not everyone wants video functionality, but enough of them want it so that it'd prove to be a nice addition to the hardware. I think the bottom line is that this stuff comes at no extra cost, so whether or not everyone wants it is moot, so long as it's not an impedance on the usability.

This just reenforces my decision to buy a 30gig Zune off Woot. I got it for 90 bucks and will have gotten 2 feature updates without spending an extra penny. I think if Microsoft promotes them hard enough this winter Santa may be swayed to put a few under the tree where there would have been iPods.
In Apples defense though, maybe tomorrow we'll find out that the new nano and touch get more than a capacity bump and a face lift. Otherwise I say Wa Waaaaaaa to them.

@Rob C: No, they're not. They're on-time, and 40GB above the competition. You can't compare the $250 model to the competition's $300 (or is it $350?) model. Zune had an 80GB for the same price as Apple's 80GB, but didn't make a model to compete with their more-expensive 160GB model. Now they've made a 120GB to fit in between and take over for the 80GB, providing 40GB more space for the same price. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Still, I'm just happy because it's the same functionality as my 80, and since I haven't managed to fill that yet, I don't have to feel disappointed about not having the latest hardware. And since all the software will backport to me, I can be extremely happy about the new announcement. Yay!

Microsoft could have forced you to buy a new Zune, but instead they are giving a 3 year old device a refresh, and breathing new life into it.
I swear, people call the Zune a copy cat device, but if theres one thing all manufacturers of PMP's should do, its to copy Microsoft in this regard. The Zune division is by far the best division in Microsoft.
This update is absolutely fantastic. It has been getting nothing but thumbs up all over the blogosphere. They were right about this being a software update. And to be honest, i wouldnt want a touch screen player from them if they wouldnt do it right, like the Touch, which is great at everything except playing music (my Ultimate Ears dont lie).

I love my iPod Nano, but at $200 I'd rather take my chances with a 16gb Flash Zune that comes with a radio. I don't even care about it having the online marketplace, buying from the radio, and the filesharing. I just want more bang for my buck, now if the new nano comes with 16gb, a built-in radio, and a mic, then I'll be torn between the two.

Microsoft, as usual, gets it really right once version 3.0 comes out; the Zune is starting to seem solid and impressive. I'm not in any real hurry to replace my iPod Classic, but if I were starting anew.. this would be a system I'd consider.
We've all mocked Zune 1.0 ('squirting' WTF), and then 2.0 got a a bit of "Mm, eh..".. but 3.0- and the solid upgrades of old Zunes.. are making them seem better and better. Good show, Microsoft. It might still be too little too late, but good show.

@LMLYP:
odd. i thougth i read on google new the other day that apples computer market share has INCREASED to 8%.
but anyway, thanks for making the same point i was planning too. apple fans make fun of zune like its a crappy product just cuz not everybody has them, but that is so hypocritical when considering how much people love their macs.
anyway, i have had my white 30 gig zune for like a year and a half and i love it. i love that the zune team supports the old model, but i do want to upgrade at some point. just dont have the dinero. i would love to see the 80 gig drop to 200, rather than just 20 dollars less than the 120. that doesnt make much sense and i dont need 120 gigs.
the wifi marketplace integration is great. doesnt look THAT intuitive, but im sure they will work on it to make it more fuctional.

@makeseven:
eBay is your friend! There are a ton of unopened new 80gb Zunes for $200 shipped...and unlike the 120, the 80gb comes with the premium headphones, which are actually decent!
