Obama Campaign Ad Attacks McCain For Lack of l33t Skillz
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:00 AM on September 13, 2008
It's a new era for political mudslinging. I, for one, can't wait for the instagib republican vs democrat fragfests coming next. McCain may be a war vet, but he's no match for Obama's Covenant Carbine amd 4,000DPI mouse! (On a side note, how hard must it be to run for president these days without email and stuff?) [Valleywag]

Words fail me. Almost.
First, we have Joe Biden encouraging a handicapped, wheelchair bound Chuck Graham to stand up for a crowd.
Then we have Obama's Law Review Article, the only one he wrote, on the topic of abortion, where he says the state has an interest in " preventing increasing numbers of children from being born in to lives of pain and despair." Got that? If you are pregnant with a child with a possible birth defect, the state has an interest in you aborting it. So much for Trig Palin.
And now we have the latest ad from the Obama/Biden camp making fun of John McCain for not being able to use a computer or send email. Obama/Biden poke fun at McCain, suggesting he is old and doesn't get the new technology.
One small problem.
John McCain's hands were so severly crushed by his torture as a POW, he can't use a keyboard. It is physically impossible for him. John McCain cannot brush his own hair or tie his own shoes. He is a brilliant man, but he cannot lift one of his arms higher than his elbow. Prior to being tortured and having his bones broken over and over, John McCain could fly jets. So let's not pretend McCain is some doddering buffoon who doesn't understand technology.
McCain's issues with email/keyboards was described in issues of Forbes in 2000 and 2002 as well as numerous other interviews.
John McCain is handicapped.
Obama and Biden are asses.

Karl Rove may be evil to his core, but he and his underlings know how to lie straightfaced to the public, and make people believe it. Look at how much the media is tearing apart Palin's comments around the Bridge to Nowhere, but she still gets a standing ovation everytime she says "I said thanks, but no thanks."

@shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: that's not the point. The point is that an e-mail system is not hard to master. Sounds like to me McCain couldn't even pass my intro to micro class that I'm taking at my local community college. If you can't figure out an email, your either dumb or lazy, so which is it? either one of those traits are bad for the American people. Not too mention it sets a bad example for the kids.
And you have no clue about the topics/subjects that are e-mailed, so you have no valued opinion on the topic. Your comment is no better than a guess, or speculation.

@johnnyabnormal: In her defense, Charlie Gibson misdefined the Bush Doctrine. No one disagrees that the US has a right to use a pre-emptive strike against a definite proven imminent threat.
The Bush Doctrine stands for the proposition that the US may use pre-emptive strikes against potential speculative threats.

@Kaiser-Machead on the Edge: What backfires about this argument is that they don't need to, much like McCain doesn't need to know how to use email. I don't see him poring over the national intelligence estimate on an iPhone after checking out the latest tweets from James Baker. Just like all the presidents before him, he will have the information he needs delivered by people, who will jump at the chance to deliver that information in person. Presumably, the lawyers you work for have people like you to take care of the mundane work such as copying, converting to PDF, etc., while they do the "important" work of trying cases. I'm not maligning what you do, I'm just emphasizing the point that people pick a lawyer based on how well they litigate, not how well their administrative staff scans documents. You probably kick ass at your job and make the lawyers look good, but the firm's clients will never know who you are, they will just see the lawyers who look good. And that's how people will see this ad... they care about how the president governs, not about the technical savvy of his administrative staff that support the people who support his cabinet. For the record, I don't like McCain, but his campaign staff knows what to say (regardless of whether it's true or not) to the voters who will ultimately determine the election. The Democrats don't. This ad will get all the connected Obama supporters excited, but I can't imagine that a single undecided Hispanic minimum wage worker or 54 year old woman is going to give a crap about whether McCain can use a computer, which they either can't afford or find too confusing themselves.

This one's a bit underhanded, but certainly not as underhanded as that one McCain ad taking an Obama clip out of context to make him look like a sexist. The one where he says "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." after Palin says "You know the difference is between a hockey mom and a pitbull? Lipstick." That's lame, McCain Campaign. Just lame.
Anyway being tech-savvy or at least proficient is a necessity by today's standards. More things to add to the McCain con list and the Obama pro list.

The real tech concerns of this country are energy. That's where this ad should really head. If McCain doesn't care to know how simple things like email works how can he help to grow and cultivate tech that would eliminate dependence on foreign oil?

This is another example of the Democrat's moronic campaign strategy. This one preaches to the choir, clearly Obama supporters are well connected and Internet savvy. Leading with comments around McCain's inability to use email is going to backfire on the Obama campaign, which needs to be pulling in some swing voters and undecideds. All those older women voters they could have courted with Hillary are going to perceive this as elitist, intellectual, young (euphemistic for inexperienced) and ironically "out of touch".
You can make a long list of negative traits to stick on the Republican campaigners, but you can't call them dumb. They know how to win elections, and it is increasingly looking like they will win this one too. The Democrat "attack dogs" are focusing their offensive on McCain's lack of computer savvy? It's like the nerd in high school picking apart the dumb quarterback's lack of computing skills... the nerd may be right, but you can bet he's not going to be the one getting laid on prom night.

As dumbed down as this is, the ad actually has a very valid point. The same people that vote to ban video games are the same people that don't know how to play them (and don't bother to, I might add).
Having someone in the White House who is out of touch with technology will inevitably backfire on us if they want to tap the internet willy-nilly. Someone like Obama may realize that searching for certain things doesn't make you a terrorist, it could make you a student doing research.
But lets say you are doing a paper on terrorist organizations through google (or the like) and they DO choose to tap the internet (which a jackass like McCain would do), guess what, now you are on a watch list.

Although McCain is indeed 'elderly', I don't think it will be too big of a deal since Palin is his choice in VP and people seem to like her. So in case something was to happen (not saying it will), atleast half of America would be comfortable with her as President.
I mean, if his age was such a big deal, why would he and Barack be at such a dead heat right now? (in terms of polls, not delegates) I really think Palin's speech helped him out a bit, because he's not that popular (yes, the PotUS is a popularity contest)

Don't forget people. AARP is the biggest voting block in this country by far. Do you think they give a rat's ass on whether old dude can or cannot send an email? Actually, I think it's to his advantage when he's addressing them to say that he doesn't have time to figure out them computer do-hickies, etc. He has more important things to try and figure out. He probably has one of those cell phones with the big buttons and no LCD, that is if he even carries one.
Dems should stick to the actual political issues and stop these idiotic commercials. They're trivializing McCain/Palin and all it's going to do is continue to backfire on them. Meanwhile I just sit back and laugh my ass off at this election year. What? I have no other choice. Dems and Repubs are basically the same thing and either party couldn't have found worst candidates to represent them.

If your argument is that the president doesn't need to know how to use a computer or send an email. Then you must also believe that the computer (or access to the Internet) offers NO useful tools, whatsoever, to the leader of the free world. The ability to exchange or receive so much available information is not needed or even useful on that level?

The internet issue is not a big deal. I'm the production manager of a music venue. I mix. I suck at lights, but then I don't have to be competent at it. I just have to hire someone who is, and then let them go at it. So what if McCain can't use the internet. He has people for that. I'm still not voting for him, but not for that reason. Eight years ago, he was a true renegade in his party. That got him accused of fathering an illegitimate black kid in South Carolina, hardly a hotbed of tolerance. So he switched gears in a ploy to get elected in 2008. I find it similar to Pat Boone releasing "In A Metal Mood." He made a pathetic and desperate ploy to pander to those who he was against in the past. Only his has proven more successful that Mr. Boone's attempt. Now, he's Bush lite, but running on a platform of change. Meanwhile the poor will continue to carry the burden of unfair taxes, and we will remain in Iraq.

For example, He was able to cast Create Food and Water at as a 20th Level Conjurer when performing the miracle of the Loaves and the Fishes.
Because He is Lawful Good Cleric, He gets a bonus against the Undead such as zombies and vampires. This was especially useful when, in Paul 4:15, He defeated the Lich King.
At Level 10, He gained Darkvision to 60' which came in handy in a dungeon raid when He killed 20 kobold berserkers while losing minimal hit points (see Letters 4:34)

Gibson asked a broad question. Palin asked for clarification. Instead of clarifying he just restated his question. Once she started answering the unclarified question, he then came in with what he specifically was looking for. I don't know if he did it on purpose, but this is a great way to make anyone look stupid. College professors use it all the time to establish an air of superiority over their students. And, computers are pretty simple (get a mac if you want really simple), if the 'President of the United States of America' can't take the time to figure out how to use a computer, what else have they not taken the time to figure out? How would they vote on gaming, or internet monitoring? Phone tapping? I don't want someone that just has people for every little thing.

@johnnyabnormal: I did, because he continued to run his mouth afterwards and make more jokes about baby cover-ups and such, it's retarded (I keeed), free speech is fine and good, but it was a VIDEO MUSIC show, ppl don't tune in to get a political view, from a non-citizen to boot, terribly poor taste.

@Dearhaw:
Transcript:
GIBSON: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?
PALIN: In what respect, Charlie?
GIBSON: The Bush -- well, what do you -- what do you interpret it to be?
PALIN: His world view.
GIBSON: No, the Bush doctrine, enunciated September 2002, before the Iraq war.
PALIN: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell bent on destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made. And with new leadership, and that's the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy, is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better.
GIBSON: The Bush doctrine, as I understand it, is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?
PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the president has the obligation, the duty to defend.
After the fact it's easy to say his first question was about THE Bush Doctrine. But that question on its own could be taken as asking about Bush's general philosophy or THE Bush Doctrine, so clarification was totally called for. When Gibson didn't clarify, she answered it in the most general sense. Gibson clarifies the question with details, and she answered it him in a specific sense of the details. Even though the question was answered he draws the question back to his definition on THE Bush Doctrine. This isn't evidence of Sarah Palin not being up on the issues, this evidence of poor communication between the interviewer and his guest.
