Nokia's N96 Has European Debut, US$800 Price Ticket
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:35 PM on September 3, 2008
Nokia's much rumoured, much anticipated N96 slider has just had its debut—in Europe. It's on sale for €550, or around US$798 (yes, this is obviously the unsubsidised price—before tax, too). And though there's no firm info on the US launch timing or prices, this is a good indicator it's on its way. [Nokia]

@da-vid:
@Jon B.: You guys mean it's unlocked and doesn't come with a contract right?

isn't the iPhone like $600-$700 over there? Plus this is the unsubsidized price, so please note that Kit.

Please, at least mention that the $800 is the unsubsidized price, like oh-so-many comments have asked you before.

Looks kinda cool.
Definitely would go well with my Tablet.
(You were all right, I'm sick of the stupid Glyde already and I hope it breaks soon. I should have listened!)
Somehow I doubt I'll see this on Verizon, but I also doubt that I'LL be on Verizon for very long at this point myself.

Because these phones totally get picked up by american carriers, who then offer them in a subsidized form with contract. Yeah, that happens all the time.
Oh. Wait.

@takashimiike Ultimate: Yes, the $800 price is unlocked and without a contract. Just the phone.
@nachobel: True, it will probably won't, but the article should at least mention this is the unsubsidized price, regardless if a subsidized version will likely not be available.

The specs on the press release look good. 5 megapixel camera (though mp isn't everything, I find that a lot of phones do really well), and 16GB of internal memory with the option to expand to 24GB. I dislike that slider to reveal the media buttons.

How did you get a star? What an arrogant comment, especially since it's incorrect.
What a tool.

Obviously it's unsubsidized. Who ever heard of an $800 subsidized phone?

@nachobel:
Luckily the USA is a pretty small market (less than 10% of the global mobile device market) so it doesn't really matter too much that all the American carriers fail to subsidize the devices that are the best sellers everywhere else in the world.
