New Nintendo DS Debuting Mid-2009, Sources Say
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 5:25 AM on September 5, 2008
IGN is claiming that Nintendo will debut a new Nintendo DS in April or May of 2009. According to their sources, the new DS model's features will be similar to the next-generation DS wishlist we published last year.
IGN says that both screens would have touch capability, which is reasonable to expect. They also point out that both screens will have a wide aspect ratio, which is more difficult to believe unless they position the controls somewhere else (I don't see Nintendo sacrificing physical buttons for a pure touch interface.)
They also claim that this may not be the Nintendo DS 2, but a revision to the current model. Personally, I don't know how can that be. With such new prominent features, which will require a new generation of games to be fully exploited, it won't make sense to not name label it as the next generation DS.
In any case, they seem very confident about the news. So much in fact, that they used our Nintendo DS 2 3D mock-up to further highlight their scoop.

@Rabid Penguin: Ok, I see now.
Still though, I could see them doing it once, which they have. But twice? Meh.
PS2 -> PSTwo (Good, sells like hotcakes)
GBA -> GBA SP (Good, sold like hotcakes)
DS -> DS Lite (Good, sells like hotcakes)
DS Lite -> DS Rev.3 (OMGWTFBBQ??...will still probably sell like hotcakes, good going Nintendo)

@Jon B.:
NES -> NES2
SNES -> SNES2
GB -> GB Pocket -> GB Light
GBA -> GBA SP -> GBA Micro
DS -> DS Light
They do it with a lot of systems.

What a shitty thing for IGN to do in swiping those mock-ups. While it was nice for them to credit the original artist, but they actually replaced the Giz watermark for theirs.

@Jon B.: How about something like the Wii? You just shake it and hope you won.

@Jon B.: Basically what I am saying is,
if it is going to play the same exact games, then why bother. Although they did make 3 versions of the GBA
GBA --> GBA SP --> GBA Micro

So
DS --> DS Lite --> something else?
Yawn, looks like they will milk the cow til it's dry.
A new portable Nintendo, please! Not a revision to the DS >.<

I don't really see this happening. A wider screen would be costly and no benefit to existing games, not to mention the potential for game incompatibility.
I can see changing the shell design to perhaps something more sexy. But then you end up looking like a PSP if you did that.
I would prefer they designed a screen that didn't suck to use in sunlight. That kind of design change would be actually useful.

I can see it... the move from GB to GBC was also an incremental step.

IGN does this "rumor" every year, hoping it will hit once.

@Jon B.: GB -> GB Pocket -> GB Light -> GB Color
Again, not unprecedented to go to a third (even fourth) iteration, or to add features.

making the screens widescreen and adding touchscreen to the top screen would be more then an incremental step. that would require more processing power and udner the hood changes.

@Jon B.: Revising the hardware to the extent they are saying is pointless, because it will create a divide in the game compatibility. GBA > GBA SP > GBA Micro had no change to the GBA game functionality/compatibility, the only functional difference being dropping support for legacy GB titles in the last iteration.
There might be a "Nintendo DS Micro" with better battery and no GBA slot, but otherwise, I can't see nintendo scrapping their amazing DS platform just yet.

Widescreen really doesn't make much sense unless they boost the system's horsepower (hopefully at least to GCN-level performance). I think an end of 2009 release would be better, by then the current DS market will likely have slowed down quite a bit.

@ludwigk: And if there was a DS Micro, they'd probably have to maintain the same screen size (a smaller screen may interfere with stylus responsiveness or travel).

That would be interesting if it was in fact the DS2, as Gameboy is officially gone now. The DS is such a top seller that they may be able to get away with this if they have backwards compatibility (which they usually do). If this is true, those revisions are big but Nintendo does add lots of new bells and whistles to preexisting products to lengthen their lifespan, so anything is possible.
Having said that, Kotaku always has the great gaming scoops, and coming over to Gizmodo to see they've put it on too is great since the sites are so interchangeable with each other.

Darnit, forget the DS2, give me Warlords II for my DS!!
My prediction for what the _real_ changes will be (and not Kotaku's "fantasy" changes that will never exist beyond the mind of the author):
- Better touchscreen (non-capacitive type)
- Slightly tweaked controls (i.e. better Start & Select buttons, better D-pad)
- Slightly reduced distance between top & bottom screens (maybe down to 1/2 of what it is now)
- Very slightly altered physical dimensions
- Detection & defeat some (most?) flashcards
- Slightly more expensive

Will they leave out the Slot 2?
Will the old games resize properly to the new dimensions?
Will the new games still be playable on the DS (Lite)
that's what i want to know
For the rest i am sure i would buy it (with a microSDHC compatible flash card of course)

This comes from the same guys saying the PSP was getting a HDD, and two revisions laters it has changed everywhere but in storage!.
If the next DS is just a revision then expect a miniDS with no GBA port and even smaller than the lite. Any other modifications would create incompatibility issues with the current userbase, which are tens of millions.

Looks yucky, booth screen should have same size...but if they're gonna release a new DS system or something, surely they would update hardware...graphics, battery life, everything basically....Doubt this is true. But if it's half true...doubt they'd make an ugly system like that (Japanese hardware usually looks somewhat sexy and even at least).
What would be great is if they made Wifi capabilities where the ds could connect to any hotspot, unsecured ones at least if anything, without needing a key input.
@Satoru: fixing the sunlight issue will probably be difficult without the use of countering light. If you have enough battery life, just increase the light setting maybe to 3 or 4 and you can see the screen just fine.
