New iPods Coming on September 9, Apple Let's Rock Event
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 2:38 AM on September 3, 2008
The new iPods will come on September 9, as expected. Apple has sent us an invitation to the event, which will happen at the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts Theatre in San Francisco on September 9 at 10:00 a.m. Obviously, it's about the iPod. But if you look at it carefully, there may be other hints. Let the speculation begin:
• As you can see in the invitation they, it is worth noting that the aspect ratio is not widescreen, but the usual 4:3 screen common in all current iPods. Maybe they are trying to put our hopes for a widescreen iPod down?
• The iPod in the song cover seems elongated, although it may be an effect of the perspective.
• Still the same classic theme, so I'm not holding my breath for a massive HD-based iPod touch (damn you, Apple).
• Someone in Cupertino is watching too much Miami Vice and A Night at the Roxbury every night, because the colour schemes and graphics are still from the 80s.
• That guy is wearing huge sport shoes. Maybe huge feet are required. Maybe the new iPods will have 7-plate 20GB Winchester drives and you will be able to sue them to work out your biceps at the gym.
• If you cross your eyes at some distance, you will see a secret message floating. It says: "Hey, John Mayer here. I will be at the Apple event, so please come to listen to my latest song called Let's Rock San Francisco. Thanks, John."
Knowing that Apple usually teases a bit when something really exciting is coming up, I have the sinking feeling that this is going to be a very boring event.

look at the curved edges that have been cropped from the picture, perhaps they are hinting at a touch screen nano that is just all screen?

The ipod touch will get bluetooth support, enabling it to use the 3g from any mobile phone, this will get people who don't want an iPhone buying the ipod touch for it's pda qualities, once they have used the ipod touch for some time, they will change over to the iphone for the convinience of having everything in 1 unit

I JUST SEEN A COMMERCIAL ON TV HERE IN ST. LOUIS WHICH SHOWED AN APPLE IPOD/IPHONE MIX. THE IPOD FLIPPED OPEN TO BE USED AS A PHONE. THIS WAS VERY THIN AND IT WAS BLACK WITH ORANGE AS THE ACCENT COLOR.

@joel_roberts: lol what's the point of bluetooth tethering? The laptop will likely have WiFi, and it will just sync the stuff you need through iTunes anyway. WiFi syncing would be nice though. BT is painfully slow for large files.

I would be excited for a storage bump on the phones and the touch, but I'd honestly be surprised by any modifications to the iphone. The phone will likely see a kick in its pants quietly in february or so, if THAT. They aren't going to change a damn thing for a while.
The new nano seems like a lock though, and a shuffle color swap is always a possibility. Im also dreaming for the real macbook pro refresh, but Im sure that wont be for another month or so.

@Kaiser-Machead on the Edge: How about the iPod classic's reincarnation as the new return to the iPod mini.
It was a well-received form factor and there's no need for the bulk or hard edges of the classic.

I think it has to do with interconnectivity among Apple devices. Maybe a bit like Zune 'squirting' only done right and among a variety of devices; hence the 'playing soon' slogan.

Here's some dumb conjecture: The "Let's Rock" nomenclature of the invitation conveys a social message. Obviously it's a large event, but could that also be referencing a new Zune-esque sharing system or something along those lines?

@OMG! Ponies!: I'm hoping against all odds that the new touch has the brushed aluminum of the old iPhone.
I'm also waiting for Apple to just come out and announce the official death of the iPod classic. The 5th generation model was the absolute best HD-based iPod, but if it supported the movie rentals, it'd be damn near perfect.

Price drops on iPhones is meaningless now. At $200 with a contract, anyone who complains about a price drop should stop spending their income on cocaine or expensive baby shoes, or something like that. If anything, the thing that DOES matter to a lot of folk are those stupid firmware update purchase prices for the iPod touch. I want that gone, cuz I don't want a new phone, but I would love to have the iPhone interface for a new gizmo.

@Kaiser-Machead on the Edge: And this is why Kaiser is a genius. 32GB exists. 64GB is the next logical step. Maybe with the plastic back.
It follows from the original iPhone/iPod Touch release schedule as well.
Where's the price point though? 32GB sets you back a cool $500. Would 64GB be $500 or $600?

And that dude is clearly holding a classic, on an angle. I'll print it out and do my own pose, maybe a quick render and photoshop. Get back asap with my results.

The usual update routine probably. Increase storage and battery life, and a few new little tweaks here and there, but this time with less iPod Classic focus. No sign of price drops, as usual, since Apple like to keep their prices in line. Oh and super-gloatery. Always gotta have the "we are better than everyone else" slideshow like every other press conference. If the Classic gets updated to specs beyond the upcoming Zunes, storage notwithstanding (e.g. Battery Life, screen size, etc.) then I'll buy it. If not, Juke has me covered :D.

iPod Classic - no change, maybe a price drop
iPod Nano - Portrait orientation (Zune-like) to make it thin again, slightly rounded to screw with your eyes and head. Scrollwheel changes buttons depending on how you are holding it (built-in accelerometer)
iPod Touch - Slight change in cosmetics, built-in speaker. Same screen. 64GB size, get rid of 8GB.
iPhone - Nothing, if anything, a 32GB model.
Slight pricedrop for all iPods (perhaps $50 each
Oh, and new colors, YOU GOTTA HAVE NEW COLORS!!!!!!! :P

I wish the Nano would have bluetooth for wireless headsets (would be great not to have wires for my workout), but I just don't see this happening. I took a look at the Sony Walkman A-series the other day which does have bluetooth and I wasn't impressed. Hopefully Apple steps up their game.

I think there's an almost guaranteed price drop for the Touch. An 8 GB iPhone costs $199, but remove GPS, 3G/Phone network, camera and mic, you get the 8GB touch for $299. Doesn't make much sense.
As for today, I'm looking forward to the price drop and space increase of the Touch, but not integrated speakers. Has anyone who wants them actually heard what speakers that size sound like? They have zero bass and sound like you turned the treble way up.
