New Apple Premium In-Ear Headphones With Dual Drivers Only US$79
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 3:32 AM on September 10, 2008

To go with the Skittles smorgasbord of new iPod nanos, Apple's got a bunch of new accessories. By far the most exciting are their new premium in-ear headphones. They've got dual drivers (woofer + tweeter), a setup you don't see until about the US$200 mark with say, Ultimate Ears' Super.fi 5 Pro or Shure's E4c-n set, which used to be over US$300. And these have got a built-in remote and mic. Yet they're only US$79. The first iPod earbuds that don't suck—amazing. Not so amazing: It appears that their remote and mic only work with the iPods launched today.
Ars indicates that mayyyybe the playback controls will work. (Laaaame.) They come with three sizes of silicon tips—which could be a problem, since great isolation headphones gotta have a perfect seal, otherwise they can sound flat. It's why Shures come with a ridiculous number of tips. There's also a carrying case in the box.
Also on the menu are new headphones and armbands. They've got an in-line control feature with volume and playback control (next, prev, play pause) from the button as well. There's a microphone on the back that works with the voice recording apps, but as with the premiums, the expanded features only work with the new iPods. They'll be US$29 next month. [Apple, Apple]

@The Magnificen7: Wow, you folks are touchy over here. I was making a snarky joke. You know, J-O-K-E? Those things commentors on gawker network are supposedly famous for?
In case you miseed it in your apple fanboy fury, I was poking fun at the fools on the new york subway who obviously wish they had better earbuds that don't fall out of there ears, or you know, play decent quality music, but are too into being "branded correctly" with the white wire to buy better ones. But thanks for playing. All contestants will receive a $50 gold watch and a copy of our home game.
@ttech10: We'd need a full ad campaign to make them acceptable, plus pictures of size zero actresses sporting them while sipping Starbucks. Not only would I love to see black apple earbuds to go wit the black ipods, I'd also love to see bright rainbow earbuds to go with those new bright rainbow Ipod Nanos. Because that would amuse me highly.

These look tasty, if you're into the in ear thing. I will give them a shot (usually buds don't stay in my oddly shaped ears).
Ultimately, I'm old enough to not care about how I look, so I just wear my grado's everywhere. I look like a sonar operator on some 70's soviet submarine, but the music sounds great :)

@ttech10: The product page shows that it has the same mic and volume buttons as the other announced headphones.
Also at the bottom of the page, it lists compatible devices and the iphone is left off.
PLUS, on the product page, it explains that the mic is used to record voice notes on compaible models. Nothing about making or receiving calls.
Lame. Especially since there is no reason for it not to work.

Depending on your audio source and your taste I'd go for the Westone UM2 if I were you.
The latter alleviates the rolled off bass on the old Nanos and the Touch.
They create a nice and warm sound.

I understand why the mic doesn't work with the old iPods, because the earbud jack needs to have the extra connector for input, which would be a hardware change. I don't get why they can't get it to work with the iPhone, especially the 3G, because the iPhone already has the input connection for the mic and the button presses. Volume control, I don't see why they couldn't maybe update the firmware/software to handle the signals coming in from those commands either.
Also, why not black, and/or any other colors Apple makes the iPods in so they match.

@matt buchanan: None of the E4 earphones (they're all the same, diff. colors/cords/etc.) are dual-drivers (unless you mean dual as in one for each ear). They have a single driver with "Tune Port" (for whatever that's worth). From that generation, only the very expensive E5 was dual-driver (which was pretty much one of the pioneers). Now the SE420, at a similar price point that the E4 had, does offer dual drivers, and the next below, the SE310 offers the Tune Port thingy.

@mr_bigglesworth:
With most good earphones, the likes of UE TF10pro, Shure SE420, Westone UM2 (just to name the better universal ones) you won't stand listening to low quality mp3/aac/ogg-files.
You can here every error and more easily pinpoint the things that were cut out.
As far as universal IEMs go, the Triple.Fi 10pro are the most revealing.
A bad recording can turn out to be unbearable, as well as low-bitrate audio.
But if you have good quality mp3s/FLAC/ALAC/... you'll love them, because those little buggers show you the music like it was intended to sound.
