Computers
Netbooks Dominate Amazon Laptop Sales
Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:00 PM on September 25, 2008
Nine of the top ten selling notebooks on Amazon right now are netbooks. (The other spot is taken by Apple.) Call them underpowered, complain about their screens, but there's a reason why every PC manufacturer in the world has jumped on the netbook bandwagon.
It should be noted, of course, that just because these systems rule Amazon, it doesn't mean they are outselling the entire industry. There's a good chance buyers are more apt to buy an Aspire One through a third party while they'll customise their more expensive laptop through Dell or HP. Still, a good showing from the little guy. @OMG! Ponies!: You can qualify as a student, no matter what the class is...show a receipt for a Chinese cooking class from anything called a "school" and youre IN. (I have some great recipes from that class too.)

I know I have a pretty long wait for my Inspiron Mini 9.
Put in my order on the 17th, slated arrival date is October 9th.
Dangerous, as it's giving me time to put together a couple of mods I already have planned for it. :D

hmmm, so Apple is poised to jump into the netbook market with their new iBrick model? any rumors on the specs for this, aside from a slab grey exterior...

Ohh man I just got an EEE 1000H 80GBHDD and theres a 160GBHDD for the same price... wtf... thanks giz, for announcing that price drop and making me go OOOOOO **drool** and miss out on an extra 80 GB of yummyness.... Not like it matters though, I dont think I would ever use 160GB just browsing the internet and writing papers for college.... I have a Zune for my music... (Gratuituous apple sucks)

I only make it one Apple PC in the top ten...
Not that it matters. I think people are just buying the netbooks for the cool factor at the moment and the fad wil die out soon enough.
That said, it should put paid to some of the dumbasses claiming that because Apple are usually number one on Amazon it actually means anything.

OK. Now it is time for a compare-o-modo on these things. I want one but have neither the time nor patience to sit down and compare all of them by price and features. Just need a very light lappy for cruizing the net and looking at my mail.

Why are people buying Apple notebooks from Amazon? Go to the store or the website and get a "student" discount.
And I got my discount legit. Girlie is studying to be a teacher so I got the discount through her. Although it's not as if they actually crack down on enforcement.

@Curves Wants a Classic View Default: Heh, I just show my Virginia Tech ID that I got back in 1999 and they let me right on through every year. I'm on my 3rd summer student discount bundle-where I sell off my free iPod on eBay or Craigslist :).

Netbooks are just too small for my big ham-hands. I'd feel like Will Smith in MIB with the noisy cricket..

Ok, maybe this is a stupid question (trust me, I'm full of 'em) but does anyone know what the least expensive "netbook" on the market today is? I'm looking for something sub-$300 (and by that I don't mean $299...I'm looking for, like, $250...). At that price, I think that I can probably justify hacking the sh*t out of it...

@godwhacker: Nothing groundbreaking or majorly cool I'm afraid.
Yep, dropping a 2gb stick in it.
Aside from that I was thinking about leveraging the USB connections in the unused PICe slot for an internal hub or something.
That stuff and the usual WinXP tweaks and optimizations.
Like I said, nothing groundbreaking, just some stuff to open it up and get a little more out of it.

Sweet! and I get mine today! Picked up the Acer one, and tried for a week to get the newer version w/ the 6-cell from NCIXUS and they boned it up good on 3 different credit cards. So newegg it was.
But this pc will be alot nicer to do wireless heatmaps w/ compared to the gigantic tome of a Dell i9300.

i still heart my aspire one that i paid $50 more a week earlier for...but still waiting for the extended battery.
Does anyone know if they sell external batteries that plug straight into the computer via the power adapter plug? I have an ac power pack, but it seems like it's a waste of energy to go from DC (powerpack-battery) -> AC (powerpack-inverter) -> DC (laptop power adapter) Or does it really matter at all?

Why doesn't everyone make a netbook? Profit margins, duh. Sure you can seel twenty billion of them, but if you're making little off of 'em, then why not just make a notebook that costs more, has a higher margin, and you'll make less of? You don't have to making 1,000,000,000 of something to have it be successful...

I love my AAO110. Put in another GB of RAM, for all of 20 bucks, and I had myself a cute little Ubuntu machine. Sure, I tried OSX on it before that, but it was ridiculously slow. Maybe Snow Leopard will change that. Probably it won't.
In any case, these netbooks are far more usable than browsing the web on a smartphone, or updating my blog on a 3 inch touchscreen keyboard. They don't tempt you to play games on them, and they're not made to watch DVDs (lacking a drive for that in the first place). But they're damn good to read up on your favorite blogs and do a bit of Skyping...!

@Lupus_Yonderboy:
EeePC has a model Surf which sells for $250.00 or a little less.
Google "EEEPC 2G Surf" and check the shopping tab to find where

This is Sean over at Box.net. I think the discussion and interest people have in netbooks, on either side, shows that people really strongly believe in a device that fits between rich, web-enabled devices for your pocket and the computer you have on the desktop. The netbook is finally ready for what users want today - but ultimately, the market will tell manufacturers exactly what they need to do with this class of computer.

@jwardell: Wait... what?! You mean that God of manufactureres, Apple Inc., bastion of innovation and forward-thinking... doesn't have a netbook?!
Stop buying netbooks people! You don't want them! What you really want is a Mac Mini! And a Macbook Air!
I'm sorry, was that heavyhanded? Good.
