Motorola Q11 Spotted, Looks Barely Distinguishable from Q9
Posted by John Herrman at 8:15 PM on September 25, 2008
Motorola doesn't seem to have a great plan for the mobile space in the next few years, and these spy shots do little to assuage our fears of imminent crappiness. I mean, there's nothing immediately wrong with what we've heard and now seen of the Q11—GPS, Wi-Fi, and 3G are standard fare for smartphones (and even feature phones) of the day—but there's almost definitely nothing exciting.
Most disappointing, perhaps, the apparently completely unmodified interface for Windows Mobile 6.1, the forsaken but largely inevitable operating system of choice for the Q11. As HTC and Samsung know (evidenced by their Touchflo 3D and i900 Omnia interfaces, respectively) and as my grandpa may or may not have told me once, even though you can't really shine shit, you have to at least try. What follows is an incredibly optimistic use of the word "maybe": maybe Motorola will redeem themselves with the Alexander and Atila. [Gizmodo Brazil]

What would happen if Android was the OS of choice on this hardware?

Translation: It doesn't look and work like an iphone so its crap.
Come on, think a little bit, its still a pre-release phone, do you think they are going to make some fancy new interface then have every other manufacturer copy it? No they are going to put on the plain OS everyone knows and keep anything special a secret until release. Besides most windows mobile phone users don't want some fancy menu overlaying the WM interface, look at the media menu from the q9m, most turned it off after the first day and even now are happy they can flash it with the q9c and drop t all together.

Slightly OT, but I am having a hard time finding a phone that doesn't suck. I want to do a little web browsing and I'd like media and GPS capabilities. I think I'd love the iPhone, but the $30/month data plan is a killer. Besides, it would be nice to have a slightly more open device.
I think I might be stuck with one of these generic-ish WinMob devices, like the Moto above.... until more Android devices hit.

Thing is, though, the Q9h is great for what it is. It has the best keyboard in the game. It is brillant as a messaging, office doc (docs to go is included), small time internet (Opera Mobile is included) phone. for a non-touch-screen WM device, it is the best.
If you want to argue the category non-touch-screen WM device shouldn't exist, you might be on to something there. Q9H is best in breed, but not best in show.

@Aturayd: I was referring to usability and appearance, not features. I use a WM phone, and they do benefit from some polish.

@Aturayd: LOL WM SmartPhone can't copy and paste! I had a Q and loved it. But it couldn't copy and paste, that's why I upgraded to the XV6800 was to run PocketPC, which can. Nice try though.

@Andyr2120: Data will still be at least $30, in fact on Verizon Wireless it was $45 for me on my Q and then when I upgraded to to the XV6800. Paying that much for data was one reason I switched to AT&T when the iPhone came out.

@transzoo: WM 6.1 can absolutely copy and paste.

@transzoo:
WM6.0 couldn't but 6.1 can and that was only a limit on the non touch screen phones.

The Q9h has the best audio quality of any phone I have ever used.

Naturally, you're missing the point. These are largely designed to be... productive. Not flashy.
They do that quite well. I agree with tmed - the Q9h is brilliant.

I just wish someone would make an x86 phone sized device. The current smart phones run faster than the original Pentuim processors and those I can still throw a linux distro on, give me an x86 phone and let me load linux and all the apps I already know and use instead of "pocket" crap like whats in WM.

The screen has been off center since the original Q....
I still don't know why in the 5 iteratations of the Q, they still can't maximize the screen size above the keyboard.
I had the Q and Q9M and they are capable devices, but I got tired of the tiny screen and weak battery life. I was really hoping Moto would come out with a killer smartphone, but they didn't and I am glad I didn't wait around. I got an iPhone and it gives me a great blend of business and play. WM didn't have Copy/Paste so I got used to living without it.

@DssTrainer: there are status icons on the left side of the screen that you can see.

Holy cow, it IS off-center! I never noticed that before. Weird.
As far as battery life goes, I was having a real problem with that too. Did a little searching on the 'nets, found that if you turn off the predictive text feature and/or upgrade the firmware, battery life goes back to being pretty decent.

NOT having a touchscreen is a feature. I hate touchscreens, and my original Moto Q has nice execution of using the keyboard and directional pad to navigate the UI.

@FredicvsMaximvs:
IIRC someone on the q forums disassebled theirs and the backlight is on the side which is why its off center.
My battery life is decnet, I can run a couple days with the wifi card before needing charged.

@oh_nos:
These are typlically targeted at business users who want them the same. You don't want manager A whining because manager B has a newer phone so by making them look the same most can't really tell.

I appreciate that it's thin and that it has a pretty giant keyboard. At the same time, if it's going to take up so much pocket space, it's pretty ridiculous that the screen size is that small. It seems to me that Moto could get back in the game if they could squeeze in more screen real estate (it might require getting rid of the giant silver M logo).

I've got a Sprint Q9c, and I'm rather happy with the device itself (Windows Mobile is another story entirely.) There really isn't much to change from the Q9, other than perhaps a better standard battery (the Sprint Q9c doesn't even include the standard battery, instead opting for the extended battery with the badonkadonk battery cover) and more oomph under the hood. The keyboard on my Q is really rather nice to use, and it's nice that they're taking that and rolling with it. The addition of the backspace key is nice, though the positioning would take me a little to get used to with the capslock key shunted down to the bottom row. I'd really like to see a blackjack2 style "clickwheel" (moving the scroll wheel from where it is on the Q9 to the d-pad)
Although the Q is a nice piece of hardware, it's crippled by WiMo. I wish I'd bought a blackberry :P

@drewkkake:
Its actually quite pocketable, but I carry mine on a belt clip. There is more under that gaint M logo, the camera module sits there so they can't really make the screen larger without loosing some other functions.

Just when it comes to the Home screen customization, i think we need to differentiate the Smartphone edition like Q9 or Q11 AND the Professional edition like HTC Touch Diamond or Samsung Omnia. Thanks YH Kwon
