Motorola Embeds CDMA Femtocell into Digital Photo Frame
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:20 AM on September 25, 2008
I have to hand it to the guys at Motorola for coming up with the idea to integrate a femtocell and a VoIP soft phone into a digital photo frame. Femotcells help cover weak spots in a cellular network by sending calls over the internet—which is a good idea except that it would involve yet another device cluttering up your workspace. The choice of a frame as the focal point for the system is a clever solution to this problem because it already utilises a touchscreen and it blends in well with the surrounding environment. Femtocells have yet to make a big impact on our wireless networks, but I can see devices like this helping to speed up adoption. [connectedhome2go via ZatzNotFunny]

The design is a bit clunky (and there's nothing 'integrated' about it), but I like the dynamic provisioning of services as well as the ability to tailor coverage parameters.
I desperately need something like this in my house. There are times I have to go to the end of my driveway to make a mobile call.

@digitalhen: I would think that for optimal signal for any "repeater" you would want it outside, at a line of sight to the nearest tower. Who wants to get the same shitty service you already get with your cellphone right now?
I don't quite understand this, is it an internet device? Does it use your internet to make a tower? Doesn't t-mobile do this, or sprint or someone else?

that's a damn good idea. but isn't the word integrated a bit of a stretch, when the femto cell transceiver is sitting to the right of the screen? :)

I'm not sure why building owners don't start installing these and advertising them as a feature of the buildings. Be they for Business or Personal buildings. At one of my previous jobs we had repeaters installed into the building by Sprint.

Damn, thought it would be something more like "Fembots." :-(

It looks like a Vista machine with a touchscreen and special software... Nice idea though.

Prototype, folks! Hopefully the real deal would be a bit more subtle with the hardware. Hopefully. Though the price tag of such a device will probably keep this idea in the labs.

They should have a big fresnel lens suspended in front of the screen and some coat hanger antennas. That would make it really look nice.

is it femto or femot? The title and the article differ.
