Lightning Review: The Wicked Lasers Torch Is the World's Most Powerful Flashlight
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:00 AM on September 25, 2008
The Gadget: The Torch flashlight from Wicked Lasers is currently being reviewed by Guinness as the world's most powerful flashlight. At 4100 lumens, the Torch can easily start fires and even fry eggs.
The Price: $US300
The Verdict: Simply put, the Torch flashlight is like carrying around a floodlight in your hand. It is easily the most powerful and semi-frightening flashlight I have ever seen. However, let's not kid ourselves into thinking that this a practical device. The only reason anyone should ever buy the Torch is to impress other nerds.
Last month I reviewed the 160 lumens Duracell Daylite and found it to be a good choice for anyone looking for a powerful, practical flashlight. It's not a fair comparison by any means, but analysing the results from that test against the Torch gives you a good idea of how bright this thing really is.
In order to illustrate its power, Wicked Lasers has released several videos showing the Torch burning paper, lighting matches and frying eggs. These claims are true—as you can see from my own test illustrated in the video above. But the heat this thing gives off is not all fun and games for pyromaniacs. It also severely limits the usability of the flashlight. After a few minutes of use, the Torch becomes too hot to hold in your hand. According to the user's manual, it should only be used in 3 minute intervals with at least 2 minutes of "rest" in between.
As you might have guessed, the battery life for the Torch is almost nil. I'm not sure what the exact figures are, but I doubt that you could get more than 10 minutes of continuous use out of a full-power 30-minute charge. And, to be quite honest, the scary charging unit above is fairly unreliable. I found myself frequently resetting the magnets because it registered a full charge prematurely.
Obviously, I can't recommend something this expensive, impractical and, quite frankly, dangerous—but if you are willing to drop $US300 on a gadget that will impress your friends for a minute or two, the Torch will definitely get the job done. [Wicked Lasers]

Sounds great! A flashlight that gets too hot to hold after a few minutes, so you drop it and it catches something on fire since you can't turn it off! Sign me up...

you can make a maglite 2D WA1164 bulb conversion that has 1500 lumens and runs for about 20 minutes for about $100
2D Maglite ~ $15
8 Sanyo eneloop AA rechargable batteries ~$25
WA1164 bulb ~ $7
Custom bulb holder ~10
Aluminum Reflector ~$25
Pyrex glass lens ~ $7
Total $89 + shipping and tax. You will have to solder the batteries together yourself or find a custom battery holder somewhere like candlepowerforums.com (~$15-$30)
Note that eneloops are the only good rechargables that will fit in a 2x in a 2D maglite without boring it out.

The flashlight is definatley cool. If it didnt get so hot, had better battery life and still had that much power, I would pick it up for that price. Maybe this is the first step, in a few years we can expect improvements, but I am going to keep a more practical flashlight in my zombie apocolypse kit for now.

The light serves no practical purpose other than frying eggs, "Oooouchh! my eyes" and burn your own hands holding it for more than a minute.
In comparison the ROP mod on Mag Lite 2D or other such lights is much more practical, economical and has equaly good 'wow' factor, No it wont burn foliage or cook eggs :P

What an utterly useless product. They might as well be selling you a ball of sun on a piece of flash paper, because it has that level of practicality. $300 for something you basically can't ever use. If you're willing to pay that much for something so worthless, then you're just as stupid as the product itself.

I'm one of those nerds who likes lasers. Not to impress my friends, just fascinated by them. Wicked Lasers is a chinese company that sells low quality equipment at high prices. They have a really bad name in the laser community, one step above the eBay scamsters who sell 'high powered lasers' that produce little light and damage your eyes with IR. If you got one of these torches, it wouldn't last a year. The editor picked up on the low quality components. Customer service is zero, if it goes wrong all they would do is tell you that these things do burn out if used improperly and offer you a 10% discount on a replacement. Don't waste your money. It sounds impressive and probably is - for a short while.
