LHC Webcams Depict Horrifyingly Singular Moment
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 1:00 PM on September 12, 2008
In case you weren't paranoid enough knowing that there's a 22.5km particle accelerator complete with Black Hole Button currently operational on this, your most favourite of planets, here's a dose of meta-reality that will make your palms even sweatier, a glimpse of live webcams monitoring the LHC Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment. Once you're sufficiently freaked out, you can share it with your most skittish and/or ignorant friends and family members, and watch them squirm with palpable existential terror. [Cyriak - Thanks Josh!]

the video would have looked cooler if there were people there when it went dooms dayish, still good for a gag on someone who isn't following the news on it.

@Pablos102030:
Actually a violet-edged black hole. High energy light would be the only light to escape the edge of the "Apparent Horizon" of a black hole...violet is the highest energy light in the visible spectrum, hence that is what you see closest to the black hole.
Recall that black holes created by the LHC will be extremely small, and hence have a lifetime on the order of less than a billionth of a second.
In conclusion, we're safe, and this video make me crack up at work =)

Awesome, lol. I looked at it without reading the title even, so I thought I was actually watching the real cam. Of course, I figured it out as soon as I saw the black and purple thing. Funny though, I like it.

ok, that was awesome, especially for all the freaks that think it is the end of the world. And really, if it was the end of the world, would be even know it, wouldn't it be like getting shot in the back of the head at point blank range or hit by a bus or train and never hearing it comming? Or would it be on a webcam so we can all squirm around while we know the floor is being sucked out from our feet...

Say what you want, but if a Black Hole DOES get generated the view of the thing is going to be INCREDIBLE.
The effect can't happen instantly, so there is going to be time, in our final moments, to observe close up one of the most incredible things ever.
Scientists, "Oh, cool!" and then ping!
My theory is that all the Black Holes we've ever discovered in the universe are really there because a civilization reached the point where they could do it and messed up.
Large and spooky lessons, cautionary tales for developing intelligences to ponder in the heavens while they themselves rush towards THEIR time to be tested.
Tested by the universe.
I'm sorry, what was the question again?

@melikespi:
if something pulled you for towards Switzerland with the force of a black hole, for even less than a billionth of a second you'd feel the impact.
Imagine being hit by a truck. How long do you think the contact with the fender lasts?
Now multiply the force and divide the time of contact.
Still feel safe?

Yes. Black holes are generally formed when a star exhausting its thermonuclear fuel collapses unto itself due to mass-gravitational effects towards a point of singularity. In theory, high energy particle accelerators could potentially create a small simulacrum but they could not be sustained in any way visible to the human eye for now. As someone said, It should not increase any significant amount in size since it depends on the original mass.
