iYo Rocks the Cradle Then Charges Your iPhone
Posted by Jack Loftus at 5:30 AM on September 22, 2008
Swedish designer Peter Thuvander likes yo-yo's so much that he designed an iPhone charger concept around them. Called the iYo (what else?), the device charges its lithium ion battery cell with an OLPC crank that's turned using the spinning power of a yo-yo. "The remote control needs only 30 cranks—which is nothing when you yo-yo," he said. Just 30 cranks and your dignity, Peter. I kid, of course, being someone who sleeps with a Duncan yo-yo under his pillow. The video demonstrates what a good idea this is:

As much as I love PDI (Product Design Innovation), I hate coming across posts like this. They get me all excited, I click to read the whole post, then find that I *CAN'T HAVE ONE* because it's not in production and instead a design concept... :P

Say what you like, but I want one of these.

This is better then carrying around a second iPhone (in the form of an external battery)

@DigitalSciGuy: I know, what's with all of the coolest things being design concepts?! Especially this one, I bet it would sell by the millions.

Seriously, considering that it can power any USB powered device, this thing is an awesome concept. I'm gonna get one if it comes around.

Just one flaw... the i and the apple sign... (makes it look useless and expensive) otherwise really cool!

@Superjuanvi: 'Useless and expensive' hahaha. Don't forget about being obsolete after 10 months... iYo 2.0

Shouldn't it say "more fun THAN the sun?" Not 'then'

Fantastic idea and design, but it kinda leaves ya wanting if you're all about the trick yo-ing. I'd imagine the cord connecting the phone to the iYo would lead to tangles. But still, cool design...

@DaiWalka:
Did you bother watching the video, or even looking at the schematic diagram?

@DaiWalka: What? Go look at it again. Yo-yo then charge!

@DisposableInterloper: Yeah I did, but the video showed a yo-yo spinning with no cord attached. The still pic with the cord attached to the yo and phone indicated nothing imo. And the diagram? Sorry - I was a chem. e. in college, not an EE. Told me nothing about how the cord was/is to be connected to the yo-yo.
@Mr_Maze: Ok - I still didn't get that from the vid but thx for the enlightenment. I got it now. :)

@BiZarRroBALlmeR: Maybe it only works until dawn. It's a vampire charger :P It should be 'More fun, then the sun.'

For some reason concept is always sexier than reality.

Spin it, remove the cap, plug in the USB cable. No offense intended, but it's not rocket science.

Too bad this concept doesn't really work. YOYO's spin fast because there is little friction. Add in the power generator, and friction slows the yoyo down to a halt, and completely ruins this idea. The crank is as power efficient as you can get. If anything, this will be way worse than the OLPC charger.
