iTunes 8 Causing Huge Problems, BSOD for Vista Users
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:57 PM on September 10, 2008
Looks like iTunes 8 is really not playing so well with Windows. Users of both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista are reporting getting the blue screen of death whenever they plug in an iPod or iPhone. Downgrading back down to 7.7 appears to solve the problem, but not without some weird, but easily fixable, app-erasing hijinks.
Matt says that doing a clean install (completely uninstalling your previous version of iTunes before loading up iTunes 8) has resulted in no BSOD issues for him on Vista 64-bit, but that hasn't been tested by the public at large yet. Apple's asking for dump files to figure out where the problem's coming from, but until they post an update, I predict rioting! Mayhem! Pillaging of Apple stores all around the country! Or just a bunch of Windows-based iTunes users grumbling into the night about how all the fancy schmancy graphics in the world can't make up for crappy software testing. [Apple Forums]

update does not update short cut on desk top so create new short cut from program files and delete old one. Worked for us. How F@#$!ed is it when auto updates roots the whole show!

I had BSOD with my 3G iPhone. After I unplugged my HP printer everything worked (well, except the printer). The last driver update for the printer was at the release of Vista and the printer has been discontinued (C4180) so I don't think I'll be seeing anything from HP to solve this issue.

So, does Vista really have the same old BSOD? They need to spruce it up a bit, like Apple's kernel panics.

@15sunrises: Human error?
Same way that Apple missed the security flaw in the last firmware update, Microsoft building an overheating console or how you get something rang up wrong at a store. People aren't perfect, believe it or not...
Now on topic (late at night, tend to ramble about whatever), I'm glad I switched over to a MacBook a few weeks ago. I used Vista and don't know how I could go without using iTunes (use it almost every hour I'm on my laptop). Also along with others, this is the first I've heard of the BSOD on Vista, of course I would only get it if I had installed some of my PC hardware wrong (when building) so that may be why (always run XP first).

I've been using Vista x64 for over a year myself and the only time I had a BSOD was when I installed a really poorly written beta firewall. I didn't even want a firewall, I just wanted to monitor a piece of software's networking activity. Anyway, other then that, not a single BSOD.
Seems like Apple has some really shitty Windows programmers too, or they're just being the normal, douchy Apple and will blame MS for their fuck up.

Having said that, is iTunes super sluggish or is it just me. 7 was bloated, 8 is no different

design your OS and no user program should be able to BSOD your VISTA.
Come back and complain about Apple when your VISTA grows up to be a real OS.
/if you think programs cant have bugs then you deserve windows. Your OS should prevent BSOD regardless of what program you run. But like most MS fan boys you think its the programs job to prevent BSOD when that is clearly the job of the OPERATING SYSTEM.

This is not the first time this issue has appeared! Soon after Vista was released and after Apple and MS was supposed to have fixed the early Ipod-Vista incompatibilities. Itunes did this exact same thing, you'd plug in your Ipod, it would start to sync then BAM! BSOD! This was fixed with itunes updates some time later but not before it became a huge annoyance.

Did people used to get excited when AOL would release a new update? I remember AOL as far back as 4.0, and used it up untill about 8.0... Now imagine if Apple was forced to open the platform and license the OS to other hardware vendors. (If the Psystar lawsuit succeeds)
They can't even manage to multi-platform iTunes without crashing the OS...
BTW - BSOD's are caused by bad drivers. Apple needs to look at the new device driver for the iPods and figure out the problem.
My wife's Nano didn't crash my Vista. I'm wondering is this is purely iPhone/iPod Touch related.

I'm going to sit on the fence here. I think Macs are great machines, but I'll never own one, because of the hardware lockdown. I enjoy building my PCs from scratch. It's a hobby I don't want to give up. If Apple ever releases the OS as a standalone for install on whatever we want, I'd buy it, but I don't see that happening. Then they'd have to trust all the parts vendors to develop proper drivers. Think about all the flaky, half-baked equipment and drivers Apple would have to support when things went wrong. This is the biggest issue with Windows. If you build a proper machine, you don't have issues with Windows.

Well, if you didn't think iTunes was a bloated buggy program before, I think it kinda seals the deal now. Even MediaMonkey becomes a svelte beast compared to the new iTunes.
As for Vista BSODs, I've never had BSOD problems on my 3 Vista x64 machines. Then I had to install Vista x86 on one of them for some vista media center functionality I wanted, and I've already lost track of the number of times it's BSODed, closed out programs such as Microsoft SQL Express and Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime because they performed "illegal operations", and not 2 weeks into the install, there are already missing WMI related .dll files from the WBEM folder and the dllcache folder no longer exists. And I didn't even have to install iTunes on it.

It seemed to work fine when i first installed iTunes Version 8, but today it's acting very weird. It's selectively deciding whether or not it wants to recognize my iPhone and it only seems willing to update apps if I select the grab purchased material from the iTunes store menu entry.I did a clean install on Vista Ultimate (32-bit) so this is very strange. I won't roast apple just yet, but this has been a bad 6 months for the "It just Works" folks and it wouldn't surprise me if they let another app into the wild without proper quality control measures.

A). This post is bullshit Elaine, I'm sorry. Everyone at my company runs Vista and we were all excited to download 8, did it as soon as it came up and ran it all day. Not 1 problem on about 12 machines. Personally, I have about 90 gigs of data and even the Genuis feature only took about 20 minutes to scan everything.
B). @spectator101: Screw us Vista users hu?
At a much higher software and hardware cost your product shows no significant benchmark advantage over Vista. Apple is a lifestyle and a very good product but your paying for the lifestyle aspect. In fact, you paid through the ass for that lifestyle and not all of us are willing or able to do that. Your system isn't sooo improved as to deserve the kind of arrogance and ignorance you display is my point.
Back to the topic at hand:
I ran this all day yesterday with Visualizations blaring and didn't have so much as a stutter. Vista is a great operating system contrary to the propoganda and crap I read on Giz so often. What I read doesn't match my experience in the slightest and to this point it never has.

Come back and complain about Vista when you know something about how an OS works..
User programs cannot cause a BSOD on Vista! Only code that executes in kernel mode can cause a BSOD; that includes device drivers and the kernel itself, not user programs. So the culprit is the iPod/iPhone drivers, not iTunes.

Running Vista home prem 32 bit, no major issues...Itunes crashed once while collecting data for genius. 24800 songs and 140GB...genius took 4 tries before it could retrieve the genius recommendations back from apple, once it failed sending, Im guessing their servers were a bit overloaded last night. Set up 2 playlists and the feature really works great, I have too many songs to be patient enough to create quick playlists and picking one song and getting pandora esque playlists of my existing music is really nice...
The tile view is nice so I can search through the 333 albums I still have bad id3/album art for. Vusualization is cool.
Still would have liked something where I could find the album in the store and right click copy info to existing mp3 that were poorly tagged.

I'm running Vista x64, and I have not had any crashing. I had to plug in my iPod Touch a few times before it was recognized as an iPod rather than Unknown Device, then a few more times to get it to actually use USB 2.0 speeds, but then I upgraded my iPod to 2.1, and since I have had no problems at all.

I just upgraded from 7.7 to 8 using XP.
After upgrading I went in to ITUNES and I tried to play a few songs. Playback was incredibly choppy... I rebooted (for the second time) and it seems fine now.
I think the genius feature is kind of neat, however why limit it to exactly 25 songs? Maybe I want more or less for a particular song?

HERES THE FIX I HAVE FOUND.
Open the iTunes 8 exe with winRar or whatever.
Open MobileDevice support.
Click Remove.
Open iTunes 7.7 exe with WinRar or whatever
Open MobileDevice Suport

The only BSOD I've had on XP or Vista in the last 3 years was my freaking 4G iPod classic. Every time I plugged it in the iPod would BSOD my XP SP2 install. I've never had a Vista BSOD, but I suppose that's because i dumped my iPod and use a Zune.

I think this is a great gift to the windows users, you have to love the classic BSOD that has been around since Windows 95. When will MS ever put an end to that?

Apple QC has been taking a big nose dive since the iPhone 3G launch.
Although I love my 3G to death, the cellular voice and data performance is just awful (compared to my old Sprint 3G Blackberry). Apps lock up and crash often. Then there was the launch fiasco with activation and mobile me.
Now iTunes is bluescreening - seriously, I have a ton of software and hardware and my system it *maybe* bluescreens once a month, and its not even tied to any individual app.

iTouch 2.1 and iTunes 8, Vista 64 bit. Plug in the iTouch and I get a BSOD(some USBappl.sys bs)
Come on Apple. Quit pandering to the stockholders and Wall $treet. You are pushing to hard, slow down and do it right before you lease this stuff. My fault for upgrading fast but 2.02 was a joke so I hoped you had fixed the crap... Jez. Tell Jobs to quit answering the phone in tech support and start managing the company.

I had something similar to this when I installed iTunes 7, only instead of screwing up my computer it synced my iPod in such a wrong way that it ground up the hard drive.

I also have Vista Ultimate 32bit, and I installed 8 over 7.7, and I do not have any problems. I have noticed that when the Genius first starts and examines all your music, iTunes uses alot of the memory (RAM). That might be a problem for some.

FYI, there are more issues with iTunes 8.0 than just BSOD on Vista. I lost a crapton of music during the upgrade. I didn't know what track was what. It seemed to lose the tags on about 70 songs. great. Read more about it at Cocoa Touch Apps.

Crashes EVERY time I plug in my nano. Tried downgrading to 7.7 and still shitty.
On a side note, I manually closed all apple apps (ituneshelper etc) that were running and it still happened - seems like a driver issue.

@Morpheous: Yeah. I think we're starting to see the effects of Apple having to actually deal with demand and a larger subset of users.
I've been saying it for years. When Apple finally has to deal with regular users and not just their fanboy crowd, you'll see the chinks in the "just works" armor.
Their real strength is that most Apple users gloss over or ignore what problems do exist, but average joes aren't quite so quick to forgive.
Personally, I'd like to see Apple pick up a bit more market share, say 25-30% to really see the meltdown quicken. You Apple folks think you're starting to see premature releases and QC problems now?
That being said, it's a great thing they're out there because it forces competition for MS and all the other PC manufacturers. I'd just love to see the arrogance knocked down a few points. Hell, the Mac v. PC commercials have become sad parodies of political commercials with the blatant exaggeration and borderline falsehoods.

I did a clean install of iTunes v 8.0. I synced my iPhone 3G once with no problems yesterday night. I tried to update it today while using a lot of other programs, and then I got the good 'ole BSOD. I am about ready to try again with only iTunes running to see if I will get another BSOD.

All this discussion is doing is bringing back the apple vs windows. Personally i run windows vista. easier and more variety. oh and whats this? my first BSOD with an APPLE product. Joy. Apple are starting to pull out dirty marketing techniques.
Honestly id rather have the DX10 gaming, the thousands of programs (as opposed to macs what.. 8 programs?). Apple users, keep your opinions to yourself. your all just jealous Windows still has more of the market share.
