iRiver Taking Pre-Orders For Retro-Slick Spinn PMP, Shipping October 3rd
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:45 AM on September 30, 2008
iRiver's beautifully designed Spinn we handled in Berlin (that giant analogue knob, mmm) now has official details on U.S. availability: $US250 for 4GB and $US280 for 8GB, with pre-orders taken now to be shipped on October 3. We'd love to see a little more storage at that price, but it's a great-looking player with a nice 16:9 AMOLED touchscreen, FM tuner, DMB mobile TV (if you're in Korea), a 1970s hi-fi inspired case and interface as well as support for all the expected video and audio formats. @holyroll: I guess if you need a brand new one from the first batch, I could see that, but selling out world wide is rarely a case. Outside of the Wii, what tech products are really that hard to pick up after they are release?

@Joseph: Peace of mind that you will get one before they sell out worldwide?

Other than allowing the company to gauge demand for a product, what to does pre-ordering buy you?

This looks pretty sweet. I'll take a look at it when I see it out in retail.

Makes my 160gb Archos605WiFi seem like a pretty good deal at $399.

Makes my $400 Achos605WiFi, 160gb PMP seem rather cheap.

Yeah.... i'll stick to my $390 Archos 5 120GB. Even the $350 Archos 5 60GB is a better deal than this... which also has WiFi and a 4.8" touchscreen.

I expect 240GB or 180GB at the minimum for that price, time and age..

Woooww, forget that! Way overpriced for my liking. I think I'd rather spring for the 2nd gen Touch and save some $$ while I'm at it (with twice the memory).

@ElementalDragon: it's called flash memory, moron.

See, this is the problem with iRiver. They produce products that make you drool when you first see them.
Then they fook up the feature list.
Then they fook up the available memory capacities.
Then they fook up the price.
The iHP-120 was probably the last time iRiver got the balance between all 3 right ... back in 2003.

Looks neat, with a better interface than the Zune... And it supports Ogg Vorbis!

@Tsumi91: Well duh it's flash memory. You don't have to call him a moron for being correct.
I bought an iPod classic because in the UK I got 80GB for £160 and you can't beat that rate here. I don't give a damn if it's not solid state - the HD hasn't had any problems and I can fit all my music on it.

If it's so "beautifully designed" why is the headphone jack on the BOTTOM?!? How do you stand it up when using it?

This looks like it would require two hands to use. That's a big "pass" from me.

Looks very nice indeed, but the price is a little steep.
For that kind of coin, I'd rather an iPod touch. It's cheaper, looks better, does more.
