iPod Touch Version 2 Review
Posted by Adrian Covert at 10:00 AM on September 10, 2008
The second iteration of the iPod touch equals or improves upon its predecessor in almost every physical facet. Slimmer, lighter and more functional, the v.2 also gets new volume control buttons, full Nike+ integration and a built-in loudspeaker. It's not a radical change, but it's better.
First, the volume switch on the side is a fantastic addition. Having used the original iPod touch almost every day for the past year, I immediately loved how easy it was to turn the volume up or down without having to think about it. The other reason this feature is so big is for apps. Some apps, like Aurora Feint didn't add a soft volume slider on screen, so when headphones are plugged in on the iPod touch, it's unbearably loud and can't be adjusted.
The second key feature is the built-in speaker. Sometimes, you wanna show a friend a video or new song without forcing them to use your dirty earbuds. This remedies that. It's not terribly loud, and will never replace your headphones, but its good for the aforementioned scenarios. But it also means we're all likely to end upnext to some asshole on the train who refuses to use his headphones.
The new general shape of the iPod touch v.2 is nice, with the bezel and back all being one piece—looking like its carved from the same DNA as the iPhone 3G—but I could live without the shiny chrome. It gets smudgy and scratched up and gross looking. You could get a case for it, but effectively negates its anorexic shape, not to mention its aesthetic value. This is a minor complaint, but compared to the orignal iPod touch, the home button feels kind of cheap. It's less springy, more plasticky, and noisier (on a relative scale). Obviously, that doesn't make or break the device. But its something you use enough to notice.
It should also be noted that the screen on the new iPod touch looks the same as the iPhone 3G — which is to say it has an intentional yellow tint. While some may not like that, I prefer it to the blue hued screen on the original.
The final thing to discuss is iPod Software 2.1.1. Available for both the original iPod touch and the new one, 2.1.1 introduces Genius playlists to the device, as well as complete Nike+ integration (to be reviewed on another day). Genius playlists are easy to use and work reasonably well. You can create a Genius list one of two ways — in the playlist menu, you can browse through your songs in a list. Or you can hit the Genius icon under the play button on the Now Playing screen. Once you do that, a new list comes up with the "Genius" picks. The Genius list is automatically stored with your other playlists until you create a new one.
All in all, iPod touch Version 2 doesn't do anything worse than the previous iPod, and it does a few things better. Current iPod touch owners probably won't find enough new here to make the switch (truth be told, this is more like iPod touch v1.5). But those previously on the fence about whether or not to buy have even more reasons to consider it now.

With the iphone now launched in Australia, wouldn't most people just get that instead of this iphone touch?

Not everyone wants to sign up to a lengthy expensive contract for a mobile , so the touch definitely has a market..

Blah... I think it's more like a v1.1. These should have been in the v1.0. A camera would have been nice. I can't justify buying it. Plus the Canadian pricing is $15 more than the exchange rate. So, I call poo poo on Apple. It's kind of an inert announcement. At least the Nano got an accelerometer. All they added to this was a speaker and volume control.

Awesome news for me, I've been considering getting an iPod Touch and now they're better and cheaper! I'm actually abandoning a Zune I got for free almost two years ago from my work (Christmas present). Not that it's a bad device, but compared to the features, games, apps and extensive support for docks, cases, etc. it's a worthwhile move.

Hahaha, what kind of people do you know with more than 32GB of media? Besides people that read Giz.
The average user has as many songs as they have purchased from iTunes. Filling a 32GB touch with songs from iTunes will set you back $8000. Us nerds who download the entire intarwebs are few and far between.

Im actually glad they didnt radically redesign the ipod touch otherwise mine would be totally obsolete. As it is, its not and stuff like a speaker or nike+ support doesnt really interest me. Don't you have to have nike+ shoes to use that feature anyways? Those shoes are ugly as hell, especially compared to my totally hot air zoom vapor v's.

Probably because Apple prefers rentals to purchases.
Would prefer music controls rather than volume, i think play/pause and track skip is more important than instant volume control.

@speakerwizard: [gizmodo.com]
From Gimzodo:
"The iPhone and iPod touch are presumed to have the same screen quality. But they don't, according to some testing and reader feedback we did today. The iPod touch's screen turns black areas somewhat grayish, washed out shadow detail, with absolute blacks appearing shimmery. (The top image is the touch. Look at the girl's hair.) I was going to do some more testing tomorrow to verify with another iPod, but I just got an email from a reader complaining his touch's screen "Looks like a negative" in the dark areas. This is exactly what we're seeing."
I've seen the same thing with my friends' iPod Touchs compared to my iPhone and my iPhone 3G. The screen on iPhone and the iPhone 3G are much more vivid, brighter, sharper, crisper, and blacks are deeper and purer. It's really a huge difference when you compare them side-by-side.
I'm sure Apple improved the screen on the iPod Touch, but by how much?

So, again, Apple has failed to sell me an iPod. Where's the storage? 32GB? They have to be joking. I understand some people are happy with that, but I never know what I'll feel like listening to or watch. And I can't believe that this kind of storage gives anyone enough room to store even a decent sub-set of their media.
On the other side, this doesn't make sense for Apple. If they want to sell TV and movies through iTunes, why not give your customers the storage to carry a lot of that kind of media around with them? Seems like you'd sell more media files that way.

I don't understand how they can market such insignificant changes as a new product and have people eat them up like hotcakes. It's the same iPod that was sold before essentially, the changes are both superficial in design and include features most mp3 players have had for a long time.

why no info about the sound quality? for some of us (those of us who enjoy listening to music over playing inane spore promos) this is a fairly critical aspect, and is ultimately what is keeping me from buying this product. As long as apple continues to ignore this fact and chose style over substance, there will be those of us who will continue to shop in the "other" column...

OK Giz here is my story, i have always been a die hard Microsoft fan i have a PC i own A zune. But something happened one day, and i crumbled. I commited sin and i crumpled to the all mighty Jobbs. i am sorry to say but i have broken down and decided to buy an Itouch, the first piece of apple mind control i will own. I am sorry Bill. But you just cant match the awesomeness of the Itouch, apples single greates piece of machinery finely crafted bursting, secreating, amazing features, for a non kingly sum. There i got it out. The itouch. Dont get me wrong i will never abandon my beloved Quad Core Gateway with 8800 GT glorious graphics, and the zune really is an amazing little buddy better for music......but it cant match the wi-fi and the speaker, and the apps. and touchscreen. So there it is in all intirity.

Come on, guys. At this point, it's probably difficult to put more than 32GB in this form factor. To achieve that, the bulk would have to be increased. Then you would all be complaining about how thick the device is. I am sure that the Archos and the Creative players of the world are thicker than the iPod touch. I would love to have 32GB on my iPhone, and I look forward to that day. If you guys want more storage, go for the iPod Classic. Of course it would make some sense if Apple came out with an iPod touch with a hard drive option, but it would need to be much thicker, as it would need a bigger battery because of the greater battery drain caused by the hard drive and the touch screen. I'm sure that all of these higher capacity units will appear in due time (especially as solid state storage capacities increase and such technology becomes more affordable). Actually, there are tons of netbooks being sold with less storage capacity than the iPod touch; and these are much larger devices! The other thing that Apple needs to keep in check is price - a 64GB SSD is much more expensive than a 32GB SSD; therefore, if 64GB iPod touches were sold at a much higher price, there would be fewer people buying them, and Apple's overall profit would highly likely be detrimentally affected. I'm sure that Apple would love to put out a 128GB iPod touch - wouldn't that be awesome? - but that will take a while to offer such capacity in this form factor and at these prices! Of course, Apple could have and should have offered a camera, maybe GPS, and definitely A2DP. I'm not sure why it's holding off on A2dp. I know that the sound quality may not be as great as listening through wired headphones, and it will drain the battery, but people truly want it, so Apple should really offer it! I don't get it - but that's why Apple stock took a hit. Hopefully Steve Jobs and company will wake up. If not, then the stock should keep taking a hit until they do! Enough of this pompous attitude. Give the people what they want!!

Posted 11:28 AM 10/9/08
@510DustMite: If sound quality is such a critical aspect of your purchase intention, you should not be considering ANY MP3 player.
Reason being that audio compression and headphone quality are the two biggest items that will affect perceived audio quality. There actually are only marginal differences between various well-known MP3 players' hardware. An MP3 player is by nature a compromise. It allows you to listen to gigabytes of music all without being tethered to your audiophile quality, $10,000 home stereo. It's like comparing a colorful EeePC with personality to a desktop graphics workstation powerhouse: one may offer you all the capabilities, performance and expansion options under the sun, but which is more appropriate for traveling and use at a picnic table on a nice day?

Do you want to bet you will? This is how we get you man....We first find our way into your mind with the lowest of the low....The iPods...The iPhones...And then, you realize just how sweet Apple shit is, and how much better it all works TOGETHER.....Once you get that iPod Touch, you will want to populate iCal with everything. And then, you will succeed. And then, you will wonder how awesome it would be if it synced to your calendar on your computer. And then, you will try syncing with Outlook Calendar, and realize how crappy it is, simultaneously understanding how much better the whole experience would be with iCal, and hence a Mac. I would love 64Mb of memory, but this thing looks like a real "must buy" when someone jail breaks it to include VoIP. That is the killer app.
And, I mean generic VoIP not "locked to a specific provider" (akak Skype) VoIP. I have 2 VoIP lines with two different providers (1 work got me; the other is my own business). Once I can use VoIP with them, I am set.
Especially, if the VoIP app lets me do recording (interviews).

I have never had the need to play a song on the go for others to hear, and I would feel like an complete douchebag if I did. I also spent a lot of time jailbreaking and hacking my 1G Touch, and I'd hate to have to do it all over. No sale.

I'd say the recessed headphone jack was a mistake and I would also like to see a 120GB hard drive version.

I think this article may be misnamed, calling it a review. I know it's sort of off the cuff, but it comes of as having been written by someone who liked it before they tried it. All it does is list the features and why they're good with the occasional "this wasn't great" but none of the real critique or analysis that I'd expect from a product review. And the only comparisons made were with the older version.
I'd definitely say this comes off more as a sales pitch than a review.

@mhlaxp: so you're saying this is a bad product? It is a refined version of a great (selling) device... it doesn't matter if you like it or not.

I love the latest reviews on items, but really gizmodo, this is the *24th* posting with related to today's fairly lackluster Apple event. I know on any other day you'd have dozens of other non-apple related products, features, and stories. Yes I know I can view everything with a non-apple related tag, but then, I'd only have 5-6 stories from today.
I'm not normally one to say that you've gone overboard with fairly shallow Apple 'sales pitches' (as mhlaxp stated), but in this case you absolutely have. If you're going to review something, at least put a little effort into it into being objective and insightful, versus appearing more like an alternative outlet, advertising cheerleader for a corporation's products.

It's a shame they didn't really improve upon anything other than the absolute basics. Pretty disappointing, really. Not a single "major" new feature, just two extremely minor ones (3 if you count nike+ -- which I choose not to).

It's apparent that Apple has a firm grasp of its customers. They always something to be desired out of their devices and still they sell millions of units. Next they add another tiny upgrade and people rush to sell their "old" iPods on eBay to quickly buy the new one.

It's amazing how Apple gets so much attention by incorporating volume buttons and a built-in speaker to its new iPod :)
I wonder what they'll do next. A physical keyboard? Video recording? A flash?

I see a lot of people in these comments getting really excited about this. I personally can't see the appeal.
I mean i like the idea of it, but it just makes so much more sense to get an iPhone without Dataplan. That way i don't have to carry/charge two things all the time.

Some of us have several hundred disks of a forgotten format, 'CDs'. Remember them. Oh and yes once i imported all of them I have 40GB of music. Add to that video, books, and podcasts and my 60GB iPod is nearly full most of the time.

Wrong. I have tested my iPod against a very good CD player and DVD player using the line level output via a dock, and it deliversthe same sound quality.
Who uses the stock earphones? When not in my car or connected to my HiFi, I use a very good pair of cans and the sound quality is very good.
That said, my iPod isn't a touch so I cant, vouch for it being as good.

@worsethannormal: "I can't believe that this kind of storage gives anyone enough room to store even a decent sub-set of their media"
Right!, when I'm plugging my Touch to my HiFi system, I prefer to listen to WAVe files (LPCM, 1440kbps) - so a much more capacity would be great!

@worsethannormal: Right! When using the earphones for listening, 160kbps MP3's quality is just fine. But when I'm plugging my Touch to the HiFi system I'd like to hear only WAV (LPCM, 1440kbps audio) files, so a much more capacity would be great!

Couple of questions:
*) Does this support audio-in, like a "built-in" microphone?
*) Has anyone used this for browsing the web? How's the response, like how long do usual web pages (say giz) take to load on this new ipod touch?
*) How much memory (RAM, not FlashROM) does this thing have? Can the memory be upgraded? (I am guessing the answer is "it doesn't have much RAM" and "NO! The RAM cannot be upgraded", but, I still want a confirmation)

This is the first time I've looked at the ipod touch. I was leaning towards getting the iphone without the data plan since I can get free wifi in tons of places, but now that I've read the ipod touch has email, aim, and safari I'm rethinking the iphone.
I barely use my cellphone (it helps that it works sporadically), and spend more time texting and emailing. But the cellphone is my main phone. Hmmm, downgrade my current plan to a prepaid, get the ipod touch?
Decisions decisions. Maybe I should wait until the solution comes to me in a dream.

@Kirk Douglas: I feel like plenty of times they offer refreshes to their lines, they just make them bigger, give it longer battery life, maybe a bit smaller...I don't think people should expect them to revolutionize a player every single time.
That being said, they offered improvements while taking down the price. I think that's a good thing?

My question is, why did the press release trumpet "immediate availability" from the online store, Apple Retail Stores and Apple authorized resellers, when as of 11:30 EDT today, I was only able to find it online? Both Apple Stores in my area, and the two Best Buys in a 20 mile radius of my home said "Nope, we don't have it, and we don't know when we're getting it."
They're apparently using some new definition of "immediate" that I'm not acquainted with in Apple's PR office.

Looks nice, and improved battery life is a bonus. Hardly earth-shattering news though! I'll skip this one though as my Touch is only a couple of months old and I love it to bits. Funny though, I only use it as a web browser/email/calendar/toy. I actually have 0 (zero, count 'em) songs on mine and zero videos. I do have some photos though. My Zen 16gb (+8 SD) is better for music.
Hopefully Touch v.3 will add GPS and TomTom will release software for it. Then my credit card will come out to play. Unless iPhone v.3 has some compelling changes, of course.

My major disappointment with this ipod touch was the lack of a GPS. Not many folks seem to put much a priority on a GPS (I only saw 2 comments which mention it). But many of the most interesting new apps are based on GPS (or at least some location pinpointing) functionality. I would like to know what location technology the touch uses (Skyhook? wifi towers?), how good it is (if I bring up a google map will I know where I am?), and how well it works with the apps (like YELP) which rely on location to do their thing.
