iPhone Coasters Convert Any Table into a Jobsonian Device
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:20 AM on September 30, 2008
From Meninos, the same designers who brought you the Samuel L. Jackson hard drive cases, these iPhone coasters have harnessed fanboy obsession into practical functionality—to protect your table from dangerous glass condensation. Constructed of thin plywood wrapped in a vinyl decal and bottomed in rubber, the 8.5cm coasters come bundled in a pack of 16 for $US60. Sadly, there's no support for downloadable coaster apps at this time. [Meninos via technabob]

@General Halfshaftery: Rounded corners cost more/take longer to make. They needed to get them to market FAST before His-Steveness sues them.

@General Halfshaftery: Which is an obvious oversight, and many coasters have rounded corners anyways, so it's really strange. You could probably make these yourself with your injet printer and some very think card stock, that is if you wanted a disposable bar like coaster

I prefer stone coasters myself - that whole condensation thing, y'know.
But these are cute too.

@Odd_Thomas: You consider that work?

@bosskev: The work was all in the clever idea to make such well known images into coasters and then making them.

Interesting, of course, but they forgot to round the corners?

Yeah, they are cute, but I would think this is a violation of copyright (unless, of course, the copyright holder--presumably Apple--agreed to license these images for this commercial, profit-making purpose). My personal objection, then, is this could therefore be some schmuck's lazy way to try to make fast and easy money off someone else's design without actually doing any work themselves.

Quite honestly, if I were given these..I would stick them up to my wall in 'iPhone' format. Would be pretty sweet..

I'm somewhat ashamed already to be such a loyal apple client - but displaying it on my bloody livingroom table goes beyond my imagination.

@bosskev: First thing I thought of too.
Sounds like there's at least a good argument that it would qualify as a derivative work.

@Jon B.: I would definitely rather punch the person that gave them to me.
More rewarding.
