iPhone 2.2 Beta 1 Seeded to Developers
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 3:03 AM on September 26, 2008
Well, that was speedy. Not too long after iPhone 2.1 arrived to fix most of iPhone 2.0's most damning problems, Apple has seeded OS 2.2 Beta 1 to developers. No one's had a chance to dive in yet to see what's new, but some mo' bug fixes, push notifications (finally) and added GPS features sound like a good bet, now that most of the bigger bugs are squished. @RVCA: MMS? Heck, why not ask for 3.5" floppy support while at it. Use email. If your friend doesn't have email, email their phone (ie. @vtext.com for verizon, @tmomail.net for tmobile, @cingularme.com for at&t, etc)

I Want better iPod controls in horizontal or "cover flow" mode. like the ability to it shuffle while listening to music, currently I have to tilt vertically, scroll to songs hit shuffle, then return to coverflow mode. It'd be nice to have a double click home button when it coverflow mode that would bring up a menu to shuffle artists, songs etc. hope I'm making sense. In the car the iPhone fits better in its dash mount horizontally, and in that mode you cannot access shuffle etc. you can only flick left and right etc. Anyone know of a way? Am I doing something wrong?

@Chromeo: The only reason push notification didn't make it in was because Apple realized that there were too many bugs to focus on new features. Now that that is out of the way and people aren't screaming at Apple over bugs in the iPhone OS anymore, they can move ahead. So I'm very confident we will see some new features in 2.2. I can't wait to hear more.

It's the simple things that I miss...
-Can't see the time of an individual text message
-Can't delete an individual text message
-Can't forward an individual text message
-Can't see how long a past phone call was
And a few things that would seem logical to have...
-Horizontal keyboard and viewing of texts
-Horizontal keyboard and viewing of emails
-Email search
I'd trade all that for Push notification and MMS

Anyway has Apple ever addressed this issue? Probably not...hopefully true push notification will solve it.

I love my 3g iPhone, but Apple has their heads up their rectums so deep that they will never realize what people really want.. They only do what they think people will accept. Apple has gotten lazy in their hardware development, software development and general company wide programming abilities. They are all about hype and making as much money as they can with the cheapest hardware they can find. I really hope that BlackBerry and HTC/Android can get more users and give Apple the challenge that they need. Competition what it is, maybe we will start getting the killer apps and hardware that we as consumers deserve. Not the petulant a-holes at the "Genius" bars kind of service that Apple has become known for.

@ripfire: text/MMS is the equivalent of instant messanging, but for your phone, and can cross all carriers. Not every1 has email on their phone, and not every1 that does have email on their phone is going to check it every second. Text/MMS fills this gap. Besides, I don't get spam text/MMS messages like I do in my email inbox. How would you like having a conversation where a car salesman constantly blurted out a sales pitch? Learn to use technology properly. Personally, I miss the days where my friends would shoot me a funny MMS pic of something they saw so that I can laugh with them in the same moment as opposed to hours (or days) later.

Have you guys tried doing a restore on your phone, and then replacing all your apps? Apple suggested doing this back when 2.0.2 was released I believe.
My Safari is rock solid, battery life is great, and all my apps with the exception of the Digg (Shovel) application, really never crash. The Digg one only does when I try to use the browser to read a story inside the app, sometimes it just crashes, but Safari itself doesn't.

Sorry to break it to you but MMS will never be added to the iPhone. Even if it is, you will be paying up to $.25 per message. The email workaround works great for me. The few contacts that I have that still use MMS instead of email have an email address in their contact info for sending mms (typing 5555555555@vtext.com is not very hard). If someone sends an MMS to my phone, I simply reply telling them to send it to my email address rather than my phone number. Once again, this is quite simple, and, to me, and most iPhone users is worth not having to pay $.25 for each MMS I send and receive.
MMS will be dead in a few years anyway.

I still don't understand why people say MMS sucks. Everyone I know that has a cellphone uses MMS (really the same as SMS). Not everyone will ever get an iPhone or any other related phone. Everyone doesn't need to check their email 24/7 or pay extra just to watch youtube while driving. Copy and Paste is just pure common sense! Who wants to type in the www. and .com all the time or have to explain something in an email or IM when they can just copy and paste from Safari and save time.

Not sure why SMS app isn't more similar to email. The speech bubble UI irks me. Would be nice if shuffle was available for Genius playlists. Not a huge deal but would be nice. I could live without copy/paste if the iPhone did a better job of recognizing phone numbers in text. I hate that when I'm invited to a conference call I can't always just click on the phone number and auto-dial. Oh, and by the way. For those of us not in the US and tied to AT&T, please allow a tethering app to the app store. Rogers in Canada allows tethering, but without jailbreaking there is no app to do it.

@dmband9: I feel your pain. Since the 2.1 rollout I might as well set my phone to manual becuase it hardly ever shows email until i manually open the mail app. Half the time I hear my laptop (with Outlook running in the background) and then I check my phone, when it should be the exact opposite. I use GMAIL as my primary email service but I'm getting very tempted to turn on push mail and start using my Yahoo account full time. I wonder when pushmail for GMAIL will go live. The IMAP proocal can support the push functionality if only Google would enable it. The G1 supposedly has some form of PUSH mail but what that means wasn't spelled out explicitly.

@dmband9: I may have a solution for you...posted it on a couple of Apple forums...it was driving me nuts...maybe it will help....The solution that seems to have worked for me actually began as a solution for another problem that was driving me nuts on my desktop....Mail would not play an incoming mail sound when I received new mail. I found a solution to that in another forum...applied it...and not only did I start getting incoming mail sounds, but...suddenly my Iphone burst to life in front of me as soon as I sent test emails....4 in a row...in a sleep state...not plugged in. This may only apply to those using Mail on their desktop for IMAP accounts (for me MobileMe)...but I'm wondering if that IS actually the common thread for those of us having the Push problem??? Anyway...here is what I did...in the desktop Mail app....go to Preferences...Accounts, and for the Account you are pushing to the Iphone...go to Advanced tab...turn OFF this option (uncheck) "Use IDLE command if the server supports it". Post here if this seems to have done it for you and maybe we can finally get Apple to issue a fix

2.2
Regardless of what it improves, adds or wrecks.
I say, thank gawd that finally I have a mobile phone from a company that knows how to use the included firmware update feature.
My last phone, a Nokia, had severe problems. It stalled going into the SMS writer and when ending a call I placed, especially if no one picked up it would lock up, sometimes for more than a minute. It so happened that I had two, my own, then work gave me one, another team member had the same phone, same problems.
There was a firmware update option, never once was there an update.
Listen to us all complaining about this feature or that and what we demand from 2.2
Far out, we all should fall over faint that there is ANY updates. If all the updates ever do is make it more stable, well that is MORE than ANY mobile phone company has EVER done, EVER.
... can i have forwarding SMS at least. LOL

Victor, there will be no law suit and you can kiss MMS good bye.
I am a big fan of MMS, perhaps like you. But here is the truth. MMS failed, carrier returns on MMS are insignificant, globally. SMS flogs it. It failed because...
1) too complex (don't yell at me I can use it)
2) incompatibilities from handset to handset
3) incompatibilities from carrier to carrier (data allowance per SMS)
4) People unable to get MMS on their phone (10 out of 120 contacts for me)
a) Plan doesn't allow it
b) Phone not configured properly (and too complex to configure)
c) Phone actually does not do it
Remember, if you are posting you are not average, you are technical, esp on Gizmodo.

Really, seriously, if there is no MMS soon I am going to get an HTC Touch or the G1. This is ridiculous, every other phone besides the iPhone is capable of picture messages.
And email is not a practical solution, no matter what you say, emailing friends a photo usually does not work if they have an average phone (i.e. they can't access email with it).
I'm not even complaining that I don't have a video camera, or push notification or copy/paste, all I want is god damned MMS. That's it.

They will add Copy and Paste. It will not be your normal clipboard function. I can assure you. It wont be a task that entails selecting your text, taking it a clipboard, quitting the application, going home, finding the application you need, and then entering the clipboard again, only to select the chunk of text and place it into relevant field. That is so very PC. iPhone, oh magnificent iPhone, will implement a completely reworked, totally new system. Of course, nothing is ever 'New', and this system will styill use a clipboard stack, but not in the usual way. We are talking, select your text, selecet the copy/paste function *(Most likely titled "move") and it will spring a list of apps, into which you click into, and then choose a field. This is the "Mobile Way." Love it or hate it. If it happens, it'll be this way...
