Internet Explorer Mobile 6 First Screens
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 2:05 AM on September 27, 2008
It's not out yet, but this is how Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile 6 looks. It will be part of Windows Mobile 6.1, finally replacing the old browser codebase from 1997's Internet Explorer 4, bringing much-needed modern standards support. It has two modes of operation, which can be specified in a preferences screen: Mobile Device and Desktop Computer.

In desktop mode, IE Mobile 6 identifies itself as "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" while the mobile mode says it's "[Device Name] (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile 6.0)". I wish Safari had this on the iPhone, especially to avoid reading the mobile version of Gizmodo.

According to The Unwired, the page rendering is quite good. You can head there for a few more screenshots. [The Unwired]

@Killjoy: Yes, it will support Flash and it will support JavaScript... Java is a server based technology and not applicable to a browser.

@elocanth: In the wild means it's out in public use - whether legitimately or not.

I'm confused... when someone says something is "out in the wild" that usually means it *is* available to the general public. So if it's not available to Joe Windows-Mobile Six-pack, then it's not really out in the wild.
Also, Windows Mobile 6.1 has been out for quite some time now, but Mobile IE 6 wasn't a part of it.
Microsoft is touting that it'll render pages the same as a desktop browser, but I have my doubts. Any change will be an improvement over the current IE Mobile, though.

Does this butcher W3C standards as much as the desktop versions?

Flash support? Java support? If yes, then built in (silverlight etc), extra download/addons or 3rd party kludges?
Yes, I know I could go research all this myself. But then I'd have no need to come here.

"I wish Safari had this on the iPhone, specially to avoid reading the mobile version of Gizmodo." or you could encourage some better development of the mobile version...

@tdogdfw: "Java is a server based technology and not applicable to a browser."
And if you don't have a virtual machine installed (and usually integrated into the browser) on your end to run the server-based script, Java will not function.
"Yes, it will support Flash and it will support JavaScript."
Thank you for letting me know.

Giz has a mobile version? I've been trying m.gizmodo.com, wap.gizmodo.com, gizmodo.com/mobile.. none of them worked so I gave up.

Those scroll bars are always the best part - most devices have the screen sunk in, so there are raised edges around the screen making it especially difficult to use finger to scroll.
Look how much space is dedicated to useless info such as "Internet Explorer" (whatever the name of this strip is) and said scroll bars.
Awesome - Microsoft still doesn't get it.

Looks as crap as ever IMHO, although anything is good compared to the existing browser. Can't wait for firefox mobile....

@Killjoy: Yes Please to flash and java. I understand that these can be a problem for mobile devices, but they're need if you're going to have real total access to the web. Anything less is just junk.

I've stopped caring for a new version of pocket IE since Opera Mobile was released which supports Flashlite 3 (yes Youtube works, I've used it quite regularly over this week).

Is it me or when you first saw the screenshots you thought it was Internet Explorer 6 for the PC. I though Giz was running a retro themed article to the older versions of IE. After I started reading I realized it IE mobile version.

Hey, do you think they wasted enough valuable screen space on the dark green and gray bars across the top and bottom of the screen?
That leaves you with even less screen space for viewing your web pages.
That's the problem with programmers, they don't have a clue about design and functionality.

Nooooooo
Seems like they are going back to the Windows 98 feeling.
I had really hoped for something that could kick out iPhone's mobile Safari, but this is just...
Buttom is a iPhone ripoff and the rest is just 30% of the intire UI plasted up with a UI, where is the "internet"?
Ohhh.. is it that small area in the middle? lawl.
And what is it with thoes sliders in the side, were is it i have seen thoes before? Ohh yhea, thats right Windows 3.1

Even Google and Apple have made a cool looking mobile browser, this is what you would have seen on a PC in 1992.

Actually, a pleasant surprise to me, when viewing Giz mobile, a link at the top takes you to the full site, making the iPhone/Touch actually worth the money.

@mrbelvedr:
I love my iPhone, too, but we're gonna get hit with the hate stick for bringing iPhone up in this thread.
Actually, I wish my iPhone browser offered the option to identify itself as a desktop to prevent loading up mobile versions of websites. Since Safari works great on iPhone, there's no need for the mobile versions.
