Indoor R-C Helicopters Go DIY, Use Spare Electronics Parts
Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:30 AM on September 6, 2008
Forget the Picoo Z's, no matter how much fun they are they can't be as cool as making and flying your own indoor remote-control 'copter. And over at this site there's a set of instructions that'll help you DIY, assuming you have some spare CD drive motors and servos lying around, and are happy with soldering and detailed rotor-carving. The instructions even say how to add a wireless cam beneath the fuselage... useful for, um, imaging the precise moment you crash it into your cat? I suspect more nefarious purposes. Still, it's a full cyclic-control aircraft, so it should be extremely flyable. [Heliproject via Hacknmod]

@Git Em SteveDave is starlost: Already got my Hadron Collider fired up yesterday. That Higgs boson is totally bad ass.

Next up...the DIY Hadron Collider.
@impliedsurprise: Actually Giz posted that DIY first: [gizmodo.com] It is a little harder, and I doubt you can use spatula blades in it like you can as the rotor balances for this helicopter.

This is a great idea.....for people that have these types of skills....which I lack. Assuming I just buy the rotors rather than fabricate them, I think it would still be beyond a lot of people's capability......err....right? Just because you can make it yourself, doesn't mean you CAN....
Next up...the DIY Hadron Collider.

Pretty neat idea for a fun project but building a manufactured kit is also good. This heli is very similar to my first heli, the E-Sky HoneyBee FP. HeliDirect.com sells them and you get the whole thing with servos, transmitter, and all-in-one gyro/speed control/mixer/receiver for $100.
The way this DIY one is done may be have a tad better performance but that all depends on the components you put in it. Those carbon fiber blades should make for a nice flight but are overkill on a heli that size.
Something this small is a handful indoors, let alone outside but it's a good training aid and spare parts are cheap as can be. In fact, if you wanted to augment this DIY project with some off-the-shelf parts, look for stuff that would fit the HoneyBee (or any of the other Chinese/Taiwanese copies that are exactly the same).
