Help Gizmodo Destroy The Sonim XP1

The world’s toughest phone, the Sonim XP1, is now available in Australia through Crazy Johns. But rather than bore you with specifications and tiresome statistics on just how tough it is, Sonim has (foolishly?) agreed to let us show you by letting us attempt to destroy it.

So, I’m partnering up with ex-Giz ed (and current Kotaku guest-ed) Seamus for a fun-filled day of attempted mobile phone destruction. And while we both have some rather creative ideas on the best way to introduce the phone to our friend pain, we want your help.

Let us know in comments how you think we should try and annihilate this thing. keep it realistic – we don’t have access to the LHC at the moment remember. The best ideas will be attempted, and we’ll video the whole thing and upload it next week.

And for those of you who are interested in the figures, the press release for the XP1 is below:

Crazy John’s brings world’s toughest phone to Australia

September 2008

Crazy John’s, Australia’s mobile phone experts, announces the Australian launch of the world’s toughest phone, the Sonim XP1.

Built for action, the Sonim XP1 is designed to withstand shock, water, wind, dust, dirt and extreme temperatures and is the only certified phone engineered specifically to meet the needs of mobile phone users who work and play in demanding conditions.

Crazy John’s has brought the Sonim XP1 to Australia to fill a gap in the market, by delivering a rugged phone to meet Australia’s outdoor culture. The GSM phone features IP-54 certification, mil-spec approval, bluetooth and is Push-To-Talk enabled.

“If you’re standing on a construction site with a welding tool in your hand, or hiking in the great outdoors, you really don’t need a fashion accessory or multimedia device,” explains Head of Marketing for Crazy John’s, Matt Scriven.

“You need a dependable working tool like the new XP1 which has been built for extreme conditions.”

Research conducted by XP1 manufacturer, Sonim Technologies indicates that 70 per cent of outdoor workers refrain from using their phones in the workplace because the phone might break. A further 40 per cent of people have broken their mobile phone in the last year, with most common reasons including damage from humidity, dropping and crushing the phone.
“The Sonim XP1 is the only phone in the world engineered for people who work and play outside; people in need of an unbreakable phone. After victorious launches across Europe, it’s time to show Australia how tough this phones really is,” said Bob Plaschke, CEO of Sonim Technologies.
“The Sonim XP1 has been shot with a Glock 9mm and a Remington rifle. This phone has been put in the oven, strapped to a rocket, used as a hockey puck, used as a hammer, kicked like a football, dragged behind a boat, driven over by multi-ton trucks, and still it survives. We challenge anyone to try and break it!”
As well as being shock and water-resistant, the Sonim XP1 is backed by an unconditional three year warranty.

“Should you find an extreme condition that takes the XP1 beyond its limits, just take it back to any Crazy John’s store for a ‘no questions asked’ replacement,” added Matt Scriven.

The Sonim XP1 is available at Crazy John’s for FREE on the $49 Crazy Cap with $310 credit included each month, or outright for $549.

    Eat it.
    Today is very hot.

Drop it in a few bags of fine grain cement and plaster as well as dropping into a full can of paint. The one BIG problem tradesmen have with mobiles is that they are destroyed by the fine dust particals they work with.

What about a real life test, Drop it in the toilet.

I’ve asked Sonim if they think it could possibly survive a Blendtec blender. Now THAT would be evidence of true indestructibility! :-)

Two words. Angle grinder. Another two words. Arc welder.

  • daaargh

build a brick wall with the phone in it then bulldoze the wall

  • Bloomy

Use a Blendtec blender on it!
    Will it blend? http://www.willitblend.com

T-ball it – set it up on a pipe, and take a swing at it with a baseball bat.

A very big, very angry/hungry, rabid Rottweiler.

Use as either a pinata or leave it in jumping castle/ball pen at a 4 years olds birthday party. That should see the end of it.

Would pouring liquid nitrogen on it do anything?

Since my last comment I am now on my third phone. Unfortunately it isn’t all that hard to kill this phone. Not that I’ve been trying to. If you really wanted to kill it quickly then I can introduce you to a 512ton rated winch that can do it all in about 2 seconds. Or,
I could just take it to my job, where I seem to average about 1 phone every 90 days.

Give it to my hubby. Mobile phones just don’t last around him. He lent over a motor and destroyed one when it fell out of his pocket and into a moving fan belt. Another went through the washing machine ‘coz he left it his pants pocket (okay…. that was my fault as well!). He left another on a car roof and it slid off and smashed as he drove off. And he tossed another out of frustration because it kept dialing numbers by itself (okay well that one deserved to be tossed – it had a mind of its own). I’d love to try the Sonim to see if it really is as good as they say it is, but given hubby’s track record (and mine) I’m a bit frightened that even the Sonim wouldn’t withstand everyday living in our household.

Having worked as a mobile phone technician for 8 years here is my 2cents worth. Some of the posts above are just absurd but I tell you what lets subject it to real life experiances not ones that will never occur. We brought back to life phones that fell into toilets, had dust particles in them, smashed from impact and the list goes on but the greatest challenge is sea water so lets take it to the beach guys if it survives its”the” phone

I’ll tell you exactly how to destroy this phone. Fully submerge it. I just bought one and tested out the waterproofing. Turns out they don’t like to swim…
It’s been about 4 hours drying out now and the thing still will not switch on.

Sonim Xp1 is rubbish. I have had a XP1 for 8 Months I have had 3 replacements the third has just died. While the phone industructability is a feature it appears the phone self distructs without any help from the user. In every instance the keypad data entry went haywire. No problem with Crazy Johns great service. I think the Samsung has a similar phone perhaps itis worth a try .
