HappyWakeUp S60 Alarm App Uses Your Phone's Microphone To Decide When To Wake You
Posted by Adrian Covert at 11:15 AM on September 25, 2008
HappyWakeUp is a new mobile phone alarm app developed for S60 (the other open platform) that only wakes you when it knows you're in a light sleep cycle. How does it know? Well, Computerworld says HappyWakeUp actually uses the microphone from your phone to statistically analyse your sleep habits based on noises you make, and when placed under your pillow, it determines what phase of sleep you're in.
HappyWakeUp runs through your normal alarm clock and won't delay the alarm any later than you have it set for. Rather, it's meant to wake you if you're in a lighter state of sleep 20-30 minutes before your wake up time, and could actually make getting up easier. Having a mobile phone within centimetres of your head for 8 hours a day. Um Sure. Hell i try to keep mine as far away as possible when im not using it.
Does anyone else think this is a really really bad idea?

Doesn't matter what cycle this thing would wake me up during. For me, there's no such thing as a Happy Wake.

the bus will wake me up at 6 everyday because my apartment is right next to a bus stop. It could also confuse my N82 if I install this app.

What about those of us with bruxism? That would be one confused wake up alarm.

From Their website "Try HappyWakeUp ArousalClock ® now! One week - 2€! Two months - 8.95€. Full license - 49.95€"
I'd never guess that had anything to do with sleep!

With studies (even tentatively) linking mobiles to cancer, I'd rather not stick the little microwaving bastard next to my head for 8 hours a night.

Just so all of you know, it isn't a good idea to have your phone on vibrate and underneath your pillow. It woke me up one morning, and I thought there was an earthquake. It just goes to show how inattentive I am right when I wake up, I guess.

I would think you could keep it near your bed, rather than your pillow.
Now, where's the iPhone, charge once, not too damned much, version :\

On ATT they don't support premium SMS so no free trial. 60 days is 13.15 and Full is $75! WAY TO MUCH. Seems promising but i have issue paying that much for a mobile application.

This would be bad for me, I move all over when I sleep, I'd probably push my phone off my bed. (actually that already hapened to me once but I was in a hotel so it landed on carpet)

@AndrewJayPollack: Not denying what you're saying there, buddy, but care to source some of that information? Especially the latter with the Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors.

Oh come one. The stupid $300 device that was specifically made for this sort of thing doesn't work. What makes you think the crappy mircophone on the iPhone with some software is going to do the trick. No way man, I don't believe this.

Oh for the love of FSM. Cell Phones cannot cause cancer. The Microwave spectrum being used has absolutely nothing to do with the kind of radiation that causes cancer.
Microwaves interact with water molecules and make them move around faster. (remember Brownian Motion from school, kiddies?). That's why microwave ovens make food hot. They make the water molecules move faster (which means they have more heat energy).
Your cell phone could, in theory, make the inside of your head slightly warmer -- except that the level would not be fast enough to overcome the normal heat loss you have anyway.
That's about it.
By the way, radiation isn't always bad. The survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki -- those who didn't die soon after from severe radiation poisoning, but rather those who received a lower dose of radiation -- have tended to live longer lives than the average person of their age and standing.

I really like the idea of this, although keeping my blinds open at night does a good job of waking me up before my alarm...
Someone needs to make one for the iPhone...

@AndrewJayPollack:
But if what you said about the survivors is true, wouldn't they live longer because, I dunno, the healthier ones survived?

I use my phone as a secondary alarm clock. This application wouldn't work for me. When I'm too tired to fumble with the buttons on the phone to silence it I shove it under my pillow. After that I don't hear a thing so this would never wake me up.

@diesel828: I don't know about cancer, but there's studies showing how bad cell phones are for everything in the body:
CNN story about how cellphones make sperm less active. If it does it to sprerm, who's to say it doesn't affect a whole bunch of cells in the body....
