Griffin AirCurve Dock Amplifies Your iPhone Speakers Without Electronics

Posted by Sean Fallon at 3:00 AM on September 23, 2008

As I recall, there have been devices in the past that amplify the sound of portable devices using a system of channels as opposed to electronics, but the AirCurve from Griffin is designed specifically to work with the iPhone and the iPhone 3G. No power source is needed—the AirCurve directs sound from the iPhone speakers through a "coiled waveguide" that, according to Griffin, produces a sound akin to a set of desktop speakers.

To be honest, I'm pretty skeptical about that claim, but at least it won't break the bank at only $US20. Although, that is probably more than I would want to pay for a dock that may only to a decent job of amplifying sound and is not capable of charging your phone (unless you buy a separate dock cable). I just received the (2) units I ordered. It does make a substantial difference in amplification but more importantly, it adds more bass or overall mid and low range to the sound. I work inside a cubicle inside an office. Though I am located near the door, I have a cubicle wall between it and my desk. So using the AirCurve with the iPhone at a medium level, it was loud enough to disturb one of my coworkers enough that he got up and shut the door. I didn't even realize it was that loud. It doesn't crank but it does provide enough sound for anyone's personal area. I love them.
