Gremlins 2, Modernised by Uber Fan with Uber Props

I haven't rewatched it since childhood, but my vague recollections of Gremlins 2 strained through my modern brain's taste filter bring me to the conclusion that the film might not be the Oscar-candidate I once thought. But there was one scene that was very memorable all the same. It's when the film breaks in the middle of the movie and gremlins take over the projection booth (where they injected themselves into various films). On VHS, the sequence was altered as a tape breaking with a similar outcome. Now, one highly talented fan updated the whole sequence for today's VOD technology with completely new clips. It's not just some fanboy creation; this is the work of a very talented special effects professional. And once you watch that first clip, the making of is even better:
The sequence was assembled by one guy who operated each puppet by hand and completed the project for US$3,000. But...wouldn't a YouTube version have been more fitting? [via bbGadgets]

My mouth is completely dried out. That's because I've been sitting here for the last 15 minutes with my jaw hanging wide open in utter amazement. I'm just astonished at how much extremely talented work had to go into this thing, and he pulled it off so seamlessly.
All I can say is, thank god for OCD artists, otherwise we wouldn't get stuff like this.

That sequence was always my favorite part of the oringal film and I still think its a brilliant use of the mythology of Gremlins. This update is just amazing, let alone fantastically done.

Holy shit. This kid is french. I knew they were behind in Europe, but Gremlins II? Seriously? thats the hot shit right now?
All in all frighteningly impressive. I have to say, it speaks volumes for the digital revolution. Soon motion picture studios will fall like record labels have since the work can be done in any apartment, even a French one, for next to nothing.
then again who did the conversion here? 2500 euros = 3000 dollars? On a good day in hell perhaps. Go Bush!

I think the best part is the Raiders edit. See the Gremlin with the Gizmo mask? :)
Didn't choose any recent releases for the Gremlins to edit. I'm picturing a very different feel to Fight Club for example...

The Goonies one was great.
I always thought that was a great line in the original movie; the crossover between Spielberg movies was a nice touch. Great to see it taken one step further here.

No joke, I just bought Gremlins 1 on DVD the other day for 5 bucks and was watching it last night. And then to wake up this morning to find this little gem? AWESOME!!!

Nice. This guy definitely has some talent. The Indy re-cut was the best of the bunch.
Though I call shenanigans on the Batman stuff. They had Batman and Batman Returns scenes all mixed together.
And now I've totally lived up to my overly-critical movie nerd persona.

Some people can't help being nostalgic... 2500 euros = $3000 ? No, no, no... the US still need to invade 3 more countries to reach that. Until then, we (the Europeans) will be ordering online from the US for some really cheap shopping... :-)

That was very cleverly done! The Batman clips were the only ones that really showed how much they were being put in, even though when Indy gets down, it's a bit clear they're not supposed to be there. And I wish they had the guy that did the original voices around, since it just breaks the feeling with his voice. Guy's got a great sense of humor, though. Makes me almost think they should try a whack at a new Gremlins movie, but it could just be how amused I was of this.

I want to marry this guy. Or at least collaborate with him to make a new Gremlins film. I'm always wanted to see a third made. It broke my heart when they stopped at two.
