Gorenje Fridge Table Lifts Food, People Frozen in Carbonite
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 8:40 PM on September 2, 2008
The Home Appliances halls at IFA 2008 have some of the best stuff in the fair, like this Gorenje fridge table, which seems to be a brand obsessed about doing really Star Trekish stuff for the kitchen. The table--with a central fridge that smoothly raises to give access to food and beverages, and a security system to avoid having your arm trapped in it--is not a concept but a real product made to order. The price: US$15,000 to US$20,000, depending on the material you choose. I'll keep using my picnic fridge and raising it to the table while making a hmmmmm noise with my mouth, thank you very much. It should be quite well protected...

Will be cheaper to keep a dwarf under the table; Tycho Brahe had one.

In order to protect journalistic integrity, it's worth explaining that the above may misrepresent Tycho. "Hiring" can suggest a casual, occasional employment.

But how many iPod docks does it have? Because if I can't charge my iPod shuffles, my classic, and sync my iPhone at the same time, I'm just not going to use this.

@strider_mt2k: ...if it survived the freezing process.

I wonder how energy efficient it is. Seems it would lose all the cool when it was opened, though standing in front of a regular fridge with the door open (while deciding exactly what kind of munchie you have) isnt that efficient either.
Until Scotty gets the Replicator back on line, it will have to do.

I don't know why, but that scene in Willy Wonka where he makes the three course meal gum just pops in my head. I do like this invention though. Now, if only they could make a machine that turns a little pizza hut puck into an extra large pizza. Three points if you can guess the movie.

@gruffnuff: It lacks a cartoon apple with a bite taken out of it. Why would I want a refrigerator without a cartoon apple?

edit: Cristal, I mean. Obviously I don't drink the high-end champers.

@Curves: Somehow I don't think that people who spend $20,000 on a table/refrigerator are all that concerned about energy efficiency. They're more concerned with keeping the Crystal at a proper 44 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sorry, but I originally read it as "Gojira Fridge".

@nicklogan: exactly my first thought!
@Curves: if you think about it, it could be more energy efficient than the classic refrigerator - when it's fully up, giving you access to the food, only food is exposed to the environment but the fridge is closed beneath, which is not the case with a classic refrigerator.
