Gorenje Fridge Is Officially Made for iPod, As Lickable as the Touch Itself
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 7:41 AM on September 1, 2008
Believe it or not, this beautiful Gorenje fridge is an official Apple-licensed Made for iPod refrigerator. And believe it or not, it's not just a speaker and a dock glued to a glossy black fridge: You can actually control the fridge itself using your iPod touch or iPhone using an application called iGorenje. The coolness doesn't stop there, because iGorenje can control all kinds of Gorenje appliances--from the washing machine to the oven.
The application is not built for iPhone/iPod touch, however, but it is served from a home server that controls the appliances directly. This allows not only to use the iPod touch, but also any other web device in your home Wi-Fi network. The program allows you to program the devices using a very easy to use graphical user interface.
For example, you can set your oven to cook a type of cake by just visually selecting a recipe and clicking start. In fact, you can even get recipes straight from the server itself. The only bad thing: the iPod dock thingie is taking the place of the built-in draught beer system, which in my book is quite -20 points. [More IFA 2008 Coverage]

Seems like a lot of work just to be able to start a cake baking while at the gym or turn on a loaded washing machine while in traffic. Bacon alarm clock is still the best.

What!? Why wouldn't you put a larger screen on the face of the fridge, and put the ipod/whatever docking station on the side? That way people could actually see any notes that could be put on the larger screen screen in front!
Not much thought put into that one :S

Why is it a webapp and not an actual application?
That and the fridge is incredibly thin. Sexy, but thin.

But why do I need to control my fridge from some where else?
Unless it can launch at beer to my exact location I have to pass.

Average life span of major home appliances is 15 years. In 15 years the IPod will be old tech. While its a cool idea and all, it seems to be over complicating things and reducing the average usable life of a major expense.

@AltonPanoptes: i don't think you get it... you could throw all your mock turtle necks and blue jeans into the washer, get into your car (where you plug in your iphone of course), drive a few miles away from your house, and start your washer w/ your iphone. isn't technology great?

In my opinion, the word "cool" is really overused. It is also my opinion, that the words "fucking retarded" are very underused.

@AltonPanoptes: I think the virtue of this concept isn't sticking an iPod onto a fridge; rather, it's trying to think of a new way to interact with our appliances.
100 years ago, if you'd have told people that electricity would allow us to both cool our homes and food, or heat both, you'd have been viewed as a lunatic. I think that in another 100 years, people who thought their appliances should just sit there and do whatever they do would be looked on as old-tyme-ish.
The nugget here isn't the execution or the idea, but rather the concept of expanding how we use our appliances.

Are you serious?
iEverything is getting rediculous. I Have nothing against the iPod or Apple, but this is getting stupid.
All you need with an iPod is a pair of headphones, not a damned fridge, blender, dildo, or anything else.

@Curves:
It's not designed to be controlled _only_ by an iPhone/iTouch, so even if every iPod product falls off the face of the planet, you can still adjust the controls from your computer or web-enabled cel phone. You just can't dock your laptop on the door.
Yes, if the iPod ends up becoming "old tech", as you say, the speakers/dock on the face of that will look several shades of stupid, but the iPod line has lasted 7-8 years so far (and it's only gotten more popular with time), and they've been pretty good at not removing significant functionality (aside from switching from Firewire to the more popular USB). As long as that dock will accept a removable dock pocket, and the iPod family doesn't drop the 30-pin dock connector, it should be possible to swap your current iPhone/iTouch for any future generations of those devices.
Now, do I think it's a dumb idea? Yeah, pretty much. Do I think it'll end up falling victim to electronic turnover? Not so much. I very much doubt this is going to be priced for Joe Consumer anyways, and anyone who'd actually buy this probably wouldn't flinch at the idea of buying a new fridge if this one ceases to please them in five years.

Whoops, forgot what I meant to come here for. Going back to stuff like The Jetsons and other concepts for the future, we've long been told to expect a day when our entire house could be controlled electronically. Every light, all the kitchen appliances, washer/dryer...everything. This is simply moving in that direction, though it's doing so by way of a user input device that was never really part of the original equation. I can't say that _this_ will be a commercial success, but now that the door has been kicked down, I very much expect to see further exploration into the smart-house realm. I also foresee a possible future where Apple ends up facing antitrust lawsuits like their main competitor, Microsoft, has regularly in the past.

@jfreel: It's built for Europe. In fact most double door fridge/freezers are called American fridges throughout Europe.
This does seem a bit pointless, I imagine you have to keep the iPod touch when the next generation of iPods are released just to control your fridge.

Control the fridge? I bought it, I plugged it in, I set the dial to 3 out of 5 and filled it with food. What exactly am I controlling here? When was the last time you changed the temperature on your fridge? Unless it tracks the bar code and emails Tesco to say I need more milk and adds that to my weekly order..........hang on, Mr Gates didn't you do this YEARS ago? (I know cause I saw it on TV and if I'm not mistaken here also)

iZac was making fun of the iMac (and The Love Boat), which is the launching point of the iApple lineup. While the iPrefix does predate Apple's use of it (the iPhone was a registered trademark for an internet-based phone made by a different company before the iMac debuted), between the iMac and the iPod, the iPrefix has become permanently linked with Apple.

Wow, a gizmodo post about a product from a company from my country (slovenia)! I truly thought that nothing from slovenia could ever make it to an international site like this. Now that we're talking about this, you should really visit slovenia if you're ever nearby. Although the status of tech stuff (no official support for xbox or wii among many other stuff - also no iPhone, although all of our neighbouring countries have it) is generally really awful, the scenery and the wildlife and stuff like that is really amazing. At least now you can buy this awesome fridge here. :)
