Google Brings Push Gmail, Google Maps Street View, Other Tight Integration to the G1
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:42 AM on September 24, 2008
Android is here, and as to be expected with a Google-made mobile OS, there's a bit of Google App fanciness going on. In fact, it's designed with Google Apps in mind so much that whether or not you're a user of Gmail and other services might determine how useful the phone will be to you.
The G1 will be the first phone to offer push Gmail, which is something we're expecting to see on the iPhone in the not too distant future. Gmail also features a Google Talk presence on Android, thanks to the fact that Gmail gets its own mail app while all other mail services are relegated to a simpler one. You can sync you contacts and appointments with the G1, but only via Google's services; no Outlook and Exchange support here. In fact, you must have a Google account to use this phone, according to Walt Mossberg.
Google Maps offers street view that you can control using the built-in compass, turning the phone around and looking around like you're actually there. A neat gimmick, but we'll see how useful it actually ends up being.
Here's a video Google released on Google Mobile Apps integration:

I hope someone comes out with Exchange Active Sync support for it. That is a deal breaker for me since I need to get my email from work on my phone and I really don't feel like carrying two phones. Work will pay for my plan on any phone I want, but I have to be able to get my Exchange mail and I don't want to use a POP3 connection.

@catfewd:
i do agree. the quality is questinable ( physically speaking). ill have to take it for a spin before further concluding how long it will last with me (my phones usually take a beating).
also is there insurance covering the phone?
or is it a you break it your screwed thing ala the iphone?

that shows stupidity at its best -
take out the iphone out of your ass for a second and try to comprehend other devices that are better and have more potential than your ATT's personal bitch you carry around everyday....

Compass is sooo yesterday. It's all about inclinometer nowadays.
But seriously, Android looks very promising. Not sure about the phone, though. That little curve at the bottom just killed it for me.
Hmm. Gotta check out their SDK friendliness.

is it me or does every photo leaked/real of the android phone looks like the sliding part is about to fall off, or at least sits at a slight angle from the rest of the phone? It pretty much screams out cheap construction...

I hope compass direction is actually implemented well. So well, in fact, that everyone else has to copy it. Street view sounds sweet too.

@Wegmans: If you are asking if someone could take an open source app and then charge for it then no. Nor can you take the code change it a little and then make it closed source. You can try but you'll get raped by a penguin.

I hope someday the iphone has push.. as far as i can tell there aren't any reasons to even consider switching.. any innovations will just be adapted by App Store merchants... there's no copywrite, right?

Android honestly looks like the kind of phone a retarded person would use. If they could use phones. It's got big bubbly colorful icons and large text and buttons...It just looks stupid. And the phone itself itself looks like a fisher price toy phone. Just thought I'd throw that out there, and get ready for some hardcore flaming.

not impressed, I thought google would do a better job when it came to design. The lines they used to draw the battery life looks like 3 pixels thick.

i just hope it gets kinda smaller, kinda prittier, but i think it's great, the whole deal of Sync with your web google account is great, c'mon, i can actually write my notes and my to do list on calendar and get it on the phone! if you have google talk, you will hit me anywhere from your pc, and u can also send e-mails and "push!" there they are. so, i would never ever have to reorganize contacts again on a phone.
I know i can save them on SIM, but i can't put pics, tons of numbers to one person, address...
i don't care google can read every single msg i send, i'm not a drug dealer(yet), it does seems to get my life easier.
it's like having those old Personal Organizers from CASIO but having the ability to check the data and insert data from anywhere (or at least, anywhere someone has a pc hooked up to net, something that's not too hard to find).
i guess it's like a dream comming true.
just need something smaller ok? i hate the iBrick, won't carry a gBrick either

i wonder, since this is a open source phone, that you'd be able to change the designs of the icons on this phone. you should be able to because you can do it with a jailbroken iphone.

Do you have to use gmail or google calendar? What about those of us who don't like the idea of Google knowing everything about them (and have our own website/email addresses)?
Also, how do you enable street view on google mobile? I just downloaded the newest version to my Tytn 2 and I don't see the option to enable it.
