Girl Commits Suicide Over LHC Doomsday Predictions
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:00 AM on September 12, 2008
Despite repeated assurances by experts that the Large Hadron Collider would not bring about the end of the world, it appears that one 16-year-old girl in central India decided to commit suicide by drinking pesticide rather than face that remote possibility. Her father noted that several Indian programs aired doomsday predictions in the days leading up to the test run, which left her inconsolable. As tragic as this is, I can't help but wonder why someone would rather go out by drinking pesticide than being painlessly vaporised. [news.com.au via Uberreview]

I do feel bad for anyone in such a tenuous mental state that the LHC doomsday predictions would push you over the edge. That being said, I also agree that it's not the fault of the LHC or any of its assosciated parties.

yeah, while this is a tragedy (mostly because it was damn silly), i gotta agreed with moonshadow. sort of like pascal's gambit. if she's right and she kills herself, okay, small gain, she dies on her own terms. if she's right and she doesn't kill herself, (debatable) small loss. but if she's wrong and she doesn't kill herself, HUGE gain, and if she's wrong and she kills herself (now) HUGE loss. so not killing herself is the logical choice.

@Moonshadow101: Just sayin' you're a douchebag? Indeed you were.
I'm willing to bet that there was more going on here for her.
It's not hard to imagine a level of clinical depression where the thought of the annihilation of all existence just makes you want to die. The rational connection that someone not suffering would make (just wait until the annihilation then) doesn't even enter the mind in any meaningful way.
The two aren't even connected as events with the same outcome. One is a powerful symbol of meaningless and nothingness; the other is an attempt to release oneself from life.

Chances are that a blackhole would be created so fast and you would stretch into it pretty fast thus snapping you apart in milliseconds. If the black whole was far away you would "float' into it and freeze, then suffocate leaving the atmosphere. Then, the strechy part and so on. There's a ton of info on blackholes, c'mon people.

People suffering from major depression, as I did for many years, are often obsessed with death. Generally, it's not 'obsessed with death' in a 'kill them all' sense, but a suicidal one. When I was at my worst, I would often watch apocalyptic films (When the wind blows, Threads, The day after et cetera). An obsession with the end of everything is common.
This girl (probably) did not kill herself because of the LHC... she killed herself because she was horribly depressed. She may have used the LHC as an excuse and may have believed that excuse, but when you're that depressed, logic goes out the window (not to mention that she was 16, not exactly in the logical period of life).
If, when I was in the depths of my depression, one of which periods was at that same age, I was told and convinced (being impressionable) that my family and loved ones were going to die, I might not have been able to handle it.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this was just some idiot who made a stupid impulsive decision (though the "inconsolable" description sounds like depression to me). Maybe she wasn't mentally ill and depressed but just retarded. Maybe, but I doubt it.
In conclusion, you're all assholes. And yes, I mean that. Giz mods, I know namecalling is against the rules but honestly, commenters making fun of a sad little girl who killed herself don't quite qualify for decency in my book. Sometimes, this place seems like some dumb forum full of pubescent teenage boys with blue balls who compete to see who can be the biggest dick and say the worst, most despicable thing. Thankfully not often.

I'd have to agree with Mr. 92BuickLeSabre. Probably more going on in her life to the point that the concept of world destruction (no matter how obviously absurd the chances are (this time)) was more than enough to push her to do something foolish.
When sentient beings from other worlds check in on us after we're gone, they'll not even begin to think that we died from Large Hadron Colliding. Instead they'll notice all of the stupid things we've done on impulse. They'll say it's sad that we never got to see that it's full of stars.

She's dead. She is totally over it, believe me. I don't know why anyone would feel sorry for her, cause she's chilling with a scared cow at this point.
Her family on the other hand, is going to have to ask if they did enough to help her. Depression is not a happy thing, and people who are prone to it pass on genes and behaviour that affect a lot of people in negative ways.
None of us are special, we're all star-dust, and that's what she chose to do with her time on earth. Her family, therapy, drugs, an education, logic, scepticism, or deep brain stimulation might have changed her personal outcome, but none of that happened, and instead she had an effect on people worldwide. It never ceases to amaze me how "compassion fatigue" manages to set in with people, who make huge deals out of personal stories and ignore the oppressive genocide that affects millions.
In all likely-hood, she will have left a more indelible mark on the annals of history than most other people in her situation, and she managed to do it while still exempting herself from the gene pool. Neat-o.

Frankly, the "sensationalistic" media is just as much to blame as anyone. My favorite are the prime-time teasers for the late news broadcasts, "Tonite at 10pm, learn how you could be in danger in your own home!" And the people who watch that kind of rubbish are naive. They need to learn not to put too much importance in what you hear.
Sadly, the girl in India probably needed help. Her inability to use common sense was her undoing. She simply didn't get it, and believed what she wanted to believe, and took her own life because of it. If it wasn't the LHC, it would have been something else. Where were this girl's parents? Clearly, they didn't know their daughter, and weren't there to recognize the signs.

this would become really funny if the world did implode upon a successful collision in the LHC, we all died in an excruciating way, and that girl would be taunting all those "idiot" commenters here in the afterlife. :D
not that i think the world would really end that way, but it's an amusing thought.
and for the retard comments about india being backwards, if it makes you feel better about yourselves, sure, go right ahead. must be nice to live a life where you need to reassure yourself that you're a smarter being than people of other countries. of course, the truth says otherwise.

some Year 7 at our school was so upset as he only found out in the morning (8:30 GMT here the time they turned it on) that he had to see the school nurse. Also it was funny how bright light coming in through the blinds scared the shit out of some people.

@92BuickLeSabre: But it is still natural selection. (spoken by someone who's been on the edge before)
@vincentw561: um... the LHC?

I'm a little disappointed that all of you Giz readers can make a young girl's suicide a source of your amusement.

@Griffehpoo: I liked that. And I agree. Good example of "Gallows Humor"
I'd like to say it's sad that someone like this killed themselves. But its more pathetic than anything.
My biggest question is.. WHY CUT YOUR LIFE SHORT?!.. I mean seriously... I would want to live as long as possible, right up till that last second (even if I were depressed).
One more thing, to me, from my perspective its like saying .. "Well one day I am going to die of old age, might as well go ahead and get it over with today instead" And that is stupid ass thinking.
The only thing that does make sense is that, well she could have been depressed. As someone who has hit the bottom, skidded along for a bit, I'd like to say, I could understand her. But that would be a lie. For me it was more of a .. "I just don't give damn attitude, apathy" and then a kinda.. *Whine bag stage*. Logic was still there. And functioning fine.

Here is the reason why that girl from India committed suicide. Hindoos believe that if an organism is vaporized they wont be reincarnated. If she finishes herself off by pesticide than she has a chance to be reincarnated...maybe as a 7-eleven worker or a nyc cabbie
