Ghetto Disappearing Licence Plate Hack Rigged to Avoid Tolls
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:20 AM on September 5, 2008
It's not what I would call a Bond-calibre flipping licence plate, but the system that a Queens truck driver hooked up in his rig is chock-full of ghetto ingenuity. Apparently, Orlando Payano mounted his licence plate on a hinged piece of metal then ran an attached cable through his cigarette lighter. When he went through a toll booth, all he had to do is pull the cord and abracadabra! No licence plate caught on camera.
Unfortunately for him, a Port Authority officer was on the lookout for altered licence plates at that very moment and saw Payano pull off his magic trick. Like most shirtless criminals pinned to the hood of vehicles, Payano denied everything despite overwhelming evidence. He claims that he did not have a cable system in the rig and his EZ-Pass tag should have taken care of the toll. The pictures above seem to refute this claim, but he may retain a lawyer to try and fight the charges nonetheless. Yeah, good luck with that, dude. [Daily News via Core77]

In NY you have a liscence plate on both ends of the vehicle so i hope it does it to both. He does know that all it takes if for him to get a ticket or a picture of his vehicles vin number right ?
Plus now his plate number is ALL over the net because of the pics.

I would have thought you would also need a rig like this for the back license plate. The toll camera's are only snapping the front license plate? Strange. What if you're super ghetto and have it on your dashboard?

@Some_F-in-ShiT_Ass: Nope, none of that spray on crap works. The MythBusters tried all sorts of radar gun & speed camera sprays, gizmos, and other tricks. The only one that seemed to work was the high performance drag racing car that sped past the camera faster than the camera could snap a picture.

With the highway robbery that is the NY state highway, I'm surprised more people haven't done this. Driving through NY is like being shaken down by the mob everytime you go to exit a highway or enter NYC.

You don't know how many times I've contemplated a motorised system which flicks round to a fake numberplate whenever I drive past a speed camera in Birmingham (which I do VERY often). It drives me nuts, all the speed cameras around here.
I blatantly stole my idea from Roland The Rat's Ratmobile though, I just need some cash to prototype my design then we're home free!

So how come the wind didn't make the plate wobble all over when driving normally? After all, if it is rigged to be pulled up by a cable, the wind at even 30 mph would do that...

@shorty63136:
The highways aren't tolled here unless you are in New Jersey, just the bridges. There are three toll-free bridges to Brooklyn and one to Queens from Manhattan. They just rape you if you want to go from Manhattan to New Jersey, Queens to the Bronx or Brooklyn to Staten Island. Then there are the "luxury tunnels" that go into Manhattan from Queens and Brooklyn.

@IphtashuFitz: I sometimes wonder when they do myths like that. Like would they REALLY tell you how to speed, avoid tickets, or fool a breathalyzer? I'm not so sure. I think they may know a way to do it, but as long as they didn't test it, they didn't have to show it on the show.
@SaturnV: Same question. It is a NJ plate, so he needs both. And I'm pretty sure that they take one of the back JIC.
@sdgmcdon: Wouldn't matter. Port Authority caught him. Jersey State police have no jurisdiction on PA property. Unless he did this on the Pike, PWay, or AC Express. Then he would fall under Turnpike Authority.
@urbanturban666: Set up a windshield wiper nozzle, pump, and tank to come out right under your plate facing up. wire it to your brake lights, and add a cut off switch. When it's flipped on, when you hit your brakes, it will spray.

As someone who has spent plenty of years driving toll roads in the NY/NJ area I just have one thing to say to this Super Genius....
Just pay the damn toll dumbass. It has to be cheaper then what you're paying now.
Oh and while your at it, try registering and insuring the vehicle where you live in the Bronx, instead of using a phony NJ address to get cheaper insurance.

While we're discussing out-of-state license plates here... why are there so many Florida license plates in NYC? Seems like there are a disproportionally large number of them here compared to other states (like Massachusetts,Connecticut, etc.).
Cars with Florida license plates in NYC seem to be worse drivers too.

Yeah, this is one of those tricks that works short-term, but eventually pisses off the authorities enough that they'll lay in wait for you. Making your license plate disappear won't do jack when there's a cop on your tail and a roadblock setting up in front of you.
Recently, I heard of some guy who got busted for using a device that would cause the stoplights to turn green as he approached (like they use in some firetrucks to clear the way so they don't have to stop at every intersection) so he'd stop being late for work without having to actually leave earlier. Eventually they noticed that the lights on a specific route were going off their timing cycle every day, and they just watched traffic tapes to see what sort of cars were driving past when the incidents happened, and once they figured out that there was always a white truck driving through each time, they just laid in wait for him to drive through on the way to work. They picked him up, and I believe he got hit with felony charges for possession and use of the device in question.
@M.O.D.O.K.:
They're probably the same thing you find all over Northern US. Snowbirds who move south for the winter, and north for the summer. They buy whichever plates are cheapest, which in your case is probably Florida over NY (here they keep the local plates).

@StarChaser Tyger: Florida has low taxes, compared to NY. So people buy a house there and claim residency. Florida's apparently pretty tight about you actually living there 51% of the time, and it's probably cheaper to register a car there (guessing) than in NY.
