Full, Reliable Instructions to Load OSX on Eee PC
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:00 AM on September 18, 2008
We've seen demos where clever ubertechie folk run OSX on the Eee PC, but in case you wanted to do it yourself, Wired has published a complete wiki detailing the installation process. It's still not a one and done installation—plan to get your hands a little digitally dirty—but at least you won't be digging through message boards full of guesses and contradictions to get the job done. Wired's instructions are clear and easy to follow, and they mention the caveats like that the sound doesn't work (bye bye, iPod fatto). Ignore such crippling limitations; you have a Mac mini-note to create. [Wiki via Lifehacker]

Ok folks, I MUST HAVE one of those EFIX thingy ma-bobs. I have a machine with all of the right hardware and an older load of OSX HackIntosh on it now. Upgrading it after each update is becoming painful.
Please take me to your leader.

Why can't hackers make a one way easy step to loading OS X on PC hardware? What I want to see is just pop in the DVD and install is that really hard to make happen I love Apple and OS X but they really need to start selling 799 laptops and 600 towers of the imac that would make perfect sense. Just use last years specs for the low end models they will still run great. I think they should come out with a 12 inch cheap laptop and a imac with no built in screen and is like the mac mini but with the power of a imac but in tower form not that tv look and to get a mouse, keyboard and screen it would cost 800.

@yogibimbi: Apple tried clones back in the Jobsless Nineties. It didn't go well. The manufacturers made crap, bland equipment that damaged Apple's brand name. When Jobs returned, he killed the clone Macs. It was thought to be a belated attempt to emulate the PCs rise to dominance through licensed architecture.
[en.wikipedia.org]
As long as Jobs skippers Apple, there will be no Apple clones.

@zakharm: Actually, it's no ethernet. Wi-Fi works, I believe.

Blargh. Fly-a-Kite OS X on XP would be better than this, and I hate Fly-a-Kite OS X.

@yogibimbi: If OS X 'Officially' gets released to work on other PCs, Mac computer sales will go down.
Although others, like myself ((to an extent)), who see the Apple Logo as a status symbol will still pay the extra to get an Apple-Branded computer.

Anyone try to use an EFiX device with an eee PC running with OSX?
If this keeps up, Apple is going to really have it's work cut out for them competitively pricing the new Macbook.

mmm, so how long will it take for Apple to give the tired masses some of the same, preferably sans keyboard? (I hate to repeat myself, quite secure in the knowledge that nobody realizes, since nobody listens, including Apple...)

I'm getting a little weary of the "lookie at what I can do" aspect of the eeePC.
What impresses me about the computer isn't that it can run XP, Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome Ibis, or Tiger; it's that my old-fart Baby Boomer mother can figure the damned thing out.

@Crash Override 777: Because Apple had a hard enough time with the Intel switch. The true Mac Zealots are not unlike hardcore Yankees fans.
A hardcore Yankee fan will yammer for hours on end about how he stuck with the Yankees through the Eighties when the Yankees were a bunch of bums and how they had to put up with Mets fans in 1986 with stupid Dwight Gooden. Then they'll beat their chests about how great the Yankees are now and how, thanks in part to ace pitching by Dwight Gooden, the Yankees returned to dominance. Anyone who started rooting for the Yankees in the Nineties is a Johnnie-Come-Lately.
Mac Zealots yammer about how they stuck with Apple all through the Eighties when Jobs got pushed out and Apple made all sorts of bad decisions. They'll yap about how although products like the Cube and the Newton were flops that failed to work as advertised, that they were visionary products. Then they'll start off on how the toilet-seat iBook was a brilliant design - much better than the utilitarian minimalism of an IBM laptop.
Make no mistake - there's nothing worse than a burned out hippie with a pony-nub driving around in a VW microbus with a rainbow Apple decal and an Apple IIc jury-rigged to control the A/C. That's the kind of guy that gets an aneurysm when you type "I-pod".
Mentioning Apple clones and cheap Macs will piss him off. Mainly because it means that with a little bit of cash - you can be as cool as him.

I've been using Leopard on my Eee 1000H for about a week now, thanks to the iDeneb installer and instructions from MacEee/Mister X (which are largely copied in the article pushed by Giz here).
It works for the most part, except for LAN and sound of course (wifi DOES work), and while it's a neat toy to play around with, it's sadly not as smooth as a real Mac (duh, who knew?!).

Not that I don't understand doing something "because it's there", but by the time I spend 2 days fscking around with trying to put OSX on this machine, I could have earned the extra money to just buy a MacBook. Plus I'd have sound and WiFi, no headaches. And I'd have enough left over to buy a Nano.

yeah, certain components don't work. But SOMEONE is working on it. Soon it will all work and many will benefit from the hard work of a few.
Don't worry about whether "it's worth it" -if you think that way, this stuff is not really about/for you. The "builder/tinkerer" spirit doesn't care nor is loyal to a platform. Only that they can try to stretch-bend-tweak it to make it their own.

@tech-tard: Well allow me to retort. This just in from el Jobso cruising down the road in his Merc in Cupertino:
"Look at me, look at me, driving and I won't stop,
And it feels so good to be alive and on top
My reach is global
My tower, secure
My cause is noble
My power is pure
I can hand out a million vaccinations,
Or let 'em all die from exasperation,
Have 'em all healed from their lacerations,
Or have 'em all killed by assassination
I can make anybody go to prison,
JUST CUZ THEY VIOLATED OUR PATENTS
I can backdate stocks with no permission,
I have it all under my command because
I can make iPods with no hard drives
No hard drives
No hard drives
And I can make Prystar die overnight
die overnight
die overnight..."
