Flight Attendants Are Latest Group to Poo Poo Wireless Network Porn on Planes
Posted by Jack Loftus at 2:00 AM on September 14, 2008
Flight attendants are the latest group looking to put the kibosh on in-flight porn, which they say is polluting the airways thanks to the new American Airlines in-flight wireless network. Taking a page from Focus on the Family, the 19,000-strong union is looking to filter the content web surfers can access in the air. But is the air really getting polluted with porn? As is the case most of the time, Association of Professional Flight Attendants reps couldn't produce specific examples of "alternative" in-flight entertainment, but did say "a lot of complaints" were raised by attendants and passengers alike.
It's also worth noting there's nothing new about passengers viewing offensive materials during a flight. Said Tim Smith, a spokesman for AA, "Customers viewing inappropriate material on board a flight is not a new scenario for our crews, who have always managed this issue with great success.''
So let's throw this out to the community today. Is porn on planes a problem for you? Should flight attendants have to become "moral policeman," as they fear they will become in the Bloomberg article? Should people who can't go without porn or violent imagery for the duration of a five-hour flight really be allowed to go on airplanes to begin with? By all means, dish. Just keep it, ah, clean. Why would you look at porn during a flight anyway? Surely those 'urges' could wait atleast until you got to a more suitable place.

First of all, I think if this was a big problem, it would have been raised a long time ago since dirty magazines, porn DVDs, AVIs, DiVX and the good 'ol JPG have been around for a long time. So what's the difference if someone watches the dvd of "Anal sluts 9" or streams it over the in-flight WiFi?
That said, who the hell looks at porn on a plane anyway?? Can't they wait? Or just get an iPhone and get their tuggin' on in the bathroom like a decent person?
Have some tact FFS

Looking at porn in a public setting shows a complete lack of class.
-so given the times we live in I'm not surprised one little bit.

@Kevin: You must not fly domestic. I think they scrape underneath the barrel for the crews that service the US.
I'm fine with them banning streaming porn on airplanes. I think I'd get along just fine using my fleshlight with some Penthouse Forum, or a OUI pictorial.

They sell the nastiest porn mags in airport gift shops. People would buy those and take them on the plane. That was never an issue. I don't see why this would become one.
Also, now it just means that more people will join the mile-high club, albiet by themselves.

I wonder what kind of person would watch porn on a plane. How sick can you be? Have the decency to do it in the privacy of your own bedroom.
But seriously, if you do not feel absolutely disgusted with yourself when you do something like this there's something seriously wrong with you. This is not something you do in public.

Call me crazy, BUT...is this something anyone needs to be concerned with, anyway?I can easily load my iPhone or iPod up with plenty of porn, "plug in" (my earphones, that is), and watch to my heart's content. Content filtering and morality choices about viewing are better left for religiocracies (see today's BBC article, "Saudi Judge Condemns 'immoral tv,'" [is.gd]), and Communist dictatorships. And the Bush Administration. Oh wait, that is us....

Porn on planes? What's the longest possible flight? Around 20ish hours? Who can't go that long without porn? If you have to, rub it out before getting on the plane, and again when disembark.
Now about this Wifi: Do they also offer standard outlets? My battery only lasts about an hour in powersave when the wireless card is on.

In Seattle, the easiest place to buy the standard porn magazines is in the airport. (Unless you are going to a store that only sells sexual related merchandise)

I'm honestly a little surprised that they want to be in the business of judging content at all - that's a tricky business. You've got to determine where the line is between "porn" and other content that might be close to the line, but someone has completely valid reasons for watching it. Do you stop a passanger from watching a rated "R" movie with a particularly steamy sex scene in it? What if that content is being watched by a film student as homework?

the real issue here is that someone will download a virus on some shady porn site which will spread to the fly-by-wire system and bring the plane down. when investigators recover the black box, it'll be filled w/ porn

@Duc: I'm just saying that somebody has to determine where the line between those two is, and from their standpoint, it seems strange they'd want to be the ones trying to set the line. It'd be one thing if there was a loud public outcry from other passengers being affected by this - then it's a business issue, but that doesn't seem to be where this is originating from at all. I know if I was a flight attendant, I wouldn't want to have to make that call unless a passenger complained.

There's no difference between streaming porn and and a DVD. there is a difference between a relatively clandestine, sound free magazine or book, and a backlit 17 inch screen with stereo sound. Even with headphones, you've still got a screen that's bigger than what we used to have in our living rooms. Hardly clandestine.

agreed on adult literature at the airport!
if they are going to ban smut through wifi (are though going to ban German smut too? cross border filtering is always poor), they should ban the 18+ magazines that are for sale every 50 feet in the airports!
the only difficulty with internet porn, is that if a customer is accused, it is much more difficult to provide proof that material was viewed, vs. a magazine where it is hard to dispose of the evidence.

Are they going to stop selling the "adult" magazines at airports?
There is no point to doing this unless they have a policy as to what is not appropriate to viewed on a plane. As others noted it is completely possible to load porn on to just about every phone, smart-phone, PMP, laptop and portable DVD player.
Also is this really a problem? Has this happened often? Is this causing a line at the bathroom?

I don't even know how someone can get away with it these days. All some angry passenger has to do is say that you were playing the porn around their kid and the offending passenger goes to jail for life and the parent sues the airline out of existence.

This is just Focus on (your own damn) Family using this new technology to call attention to themselves. People have brought porn on planes before, they will in the future. Any reasonable person doesn't view material in front of others, but it has nothing to do with wireless networks - its just a means of accessing it.
FOTF is nothing more than a group of ninnies who masquerades as a religious group on order to promote political causes.
and as of late they've been getting pretty desperate:

@urbanturban666: You could probably use those 3M privacy screen filters.
I'm not even concerned about this one bit. I have this strange faith in the moral decency of our culture. If some dude wants to look at his porn on a plane and someone else sees it, it doesn't take long for a gaggle of angry parents to put an end to it. No web-filtering, spy-cams, or moral-policing-stewardesses are needed for that. That said, if there is a problem, it's only good business for the airline to decide for itself what method of moral-social-policing they want to do.

I am sure there is a 'code of conduct' somewhere in that ticket you get. If you can be denied boarding cause you are dressed like a hoe, why would you be able to look at your fave furry yaoi cosplayer page on the plane?
IMO this is just a novelity for people getting internet at FL250... 'schweet, I can get itchybum-smellyfinger.com up here!'. Is it okay if someone has porn on thier HDD and watches it, as long as it isnt wireless? No, so throw something in the code of conduct, they get asked, warned, then banned from the airline.

First of all, you can BUY the dirty magazines at the airports, but you can LOOK at them on the plane. So it IS the same thing. They don't want you waving pornographic material around in the presence of other people, particularly the stewardesses, who would have to come by and see it in the course of their job.
Secondly, despite the Liberal distortion of the term "separation of church and state," this country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and morals, and the more indecency we allow, the more prevalent said indecency becomes. If we want to have a strong society, we need to display a mature sense of respect for its citizens.
