First G1 Ad Shows Blatant Hostility Towards the English Language
Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:05 AM on September 24, 2008
The first G1 ad has hit, and it's so sassy! It like, totally doesn't care about using proper English! It's just so much, uh, funnerer than other mobile ads. You know, because that's how the kids are talking these days. Incorrectly. Oh, T-Mo, you're so hip and with it. No wonder you wheeled out the Google kings on rollerblades today.

I think HTC is an awesome company. I have had many of their phones including a TyTN with front facing cam. This is pretty close to the ugliest thing they've ever made.
Aside from that first AT&T 3g phone (cingular 2125) which I also had/have [if anybody wants it]. That 3g hump was hideous just like the bottom part of this thing. Yick!

@ThaiGrocer:
For the G2, that would be HTC's turf, and HTC certainly has no intentions of stopping now. Plus there are other handset makers ready to jump in. And Apple isn't due to launch their next iPhone for another 9 months, which will give Android plenty of time to really push the Google brand.

I will defend the use of funner ([grammar.quickanddirtytips.com]), but did they actually use the term "connecteder"?

But seriously, It's a good start for Google. As long as they get a lot of feedback before the G2, I'm hoping they can keep Apple on their feet.

"Think different" worked for iPhone.
"Smarterer" will work for Google.
It's only evolutionary.
I think the next catch phrase will be "banana phone", but that may be just me.
"...Just I"? "...Just my thinking"? OMG, what have they done?

This ad is like watching the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan" and then having that segue into a Mad TV skit.
The viewer is left confused and unsure.
It would be one thing if they used a word from pop culture, but "smarterer" is not something that is common enough for people to connect with.
Absolute FAIL..erer.

While I'm definitely excited for Android-- and I think it will be a tremendous success-- this advertisement gives me little, if any, hope that Google has the right marketing people behind this thing. Apple, no matter how you feel about them, have set the bar for advertising mobile devices. This attempt by Google and T-Mobile just feels incredibly amateurish. I was cringing by the halfway mark, and was fortunate to be able to blame my tears on laughter.
At least Microsoft can take solace in the fact their new ads, while utter crap, aren't so bad as this.

Wow. We can all talk as much shit as we want about this piece as much of the criticism is warranted. But c'mon, guys: This is not an ad for the G1. Least of all a TV ad. TV spots are 15, 30, or 60 seconds in length. This video is 1min and 12sec. You'd never see this thing on TV. This is most likely NOT an ad campaign, but rather an internal piece or an in-store display video that some smart cookie somewhere has mistaken as part of Google's advertising campaign for the G1. Video is weak in concept? Yes. Video is first ad? No.
