Dude's KITT-Modded Car Apparently Does 550KPH While Parked
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:20 AM on September 26, 2008
Do you think the original KITT's dashboard was so overloaded with useless indicators and LEDs so dumbstastically stupid that it made The Hoff look like a Physics Nobel Prize in leather pants? Then you still haven't seen this. Can anybody please tell us what the hell is the number in the middle of that christmas tree dashboard means?

It's obviously the tacho reading in 10ths of RPM (340 meaning 3400RPM)... It also corresponds the the rising bar graph beside it..
MPH is the left hand side LED readout which changes from 0-40ish numbers...

@CSX321: Every Digital tachometer make pointless reeving when use with point ignition engines at idle, but you have an accurate reading when doing 1200+ RPM.
My instructor told me so when i was doing my PPL in a small Allegro 2000 equiped with a digital tach.

I guess it's RPMs, but damn that engine idles slow. I can't imagine going 15-20 MPH in my car and having my engine BELOW 1000 RPMs. Granted I don't drive a giant V8.
No way it's a compass, btw; watch when he goes around corners vs when he just speeds up in a straight line.

He does mention on the video that he had to get home to keep the wife happy, so we know he's not living in his parent's basement. I'd say that if you have a car like this, and still have a wife, you'd better keep her happy somehow!
I can imagine the eyeroll she probably does every time people ask her, "isn't your husband the guy that drives that Knight Rider car?" Better keep a gun out of her hands!

It looks like a tach, but like his speedo (that sits on 002 mph fully stopped), the numbers don't always seem to match his shifting and rev noise. I think he needs better calibration, but whatever makes you feel important and special I guess.

SuchetaThisbe

For the people saying tachymeter, even multiplying by a factor of 10 wouldn't get it up to speeds useful for acceleration. Then again, he's only going an average of 15-20 mph. Why not let KITT go?

@Ricky: Yeah its the tach, x10 means if you take the number on that display and multiply it by 10 you get the actual RPM...
Not sure why I am responding to Ricky since he knew what he was talking about, but no one else had explained the x10 thing yet since some of you clearly didn't get it.

It might be a badly tuned tach Otherwise no idea.
