Download Slacker Uprising, First Free Full Feature Film on the Web
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:45 PM on September 24, 2008
With only a few weeks to go until Election Day, director/showman/clown--strike out words depending on your political preferences--Michael Moore's Slacker Uprising is now available in the internet. Created to promote vote among young people, Moore is saying that this is the first full feature film to be released for free on the web, using Blip.tv, Amazon Video on Demand, iTunes, DivX, MPEG4, and Lycos VOD.
The movie follows a 60 city tour across twenty battleground states to promote voting with the objective to change the colour of the current administration. It has appearances by REM, Joan Baez (Steve Jobs' former girlfriend, for those of you who are not as old as myself), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Viggo Mortensen, Roseanne Barr, and of course, Michael Moore himself, as well as a bunch of extras. Quite honestly, while I personally agree--looking from outside the US--with the need for change, I would have preffered to get the Dark Knight free in HD. [Slacker Uprising]

The first free feature length movie online was "Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning", released in 2005. An awesome sci-fi parody with high quality special effects. It's so good, I would have actually payed 10 bucks to see it in the movies.

@willyboy:
I imagine it'd be really special. And by special I don't mean special like that Kleinaman boy down the street. More special like... like Special K, the cereal. Hey, what do they do with the regular K? And for that matter, what ever happend to K. Ballard? You know, if you said mallard and you had a cold, it would sound like ballard.

@Paul D: I think he made distributors skittish with his Piracy-OK stance (see [www.filmjunk.com]) on SICKO!, which was fairly well-made and could have made more at the box-office if it wasn't for the torrented DVD-quality leak.
Moore on piracy:
Right now, Moore and the Weinsteins are on the outs - both over politics and over money.

Moore is voluntarily putting this out through slacker channels so no one can point to his decreasing box-office viability. After all, if he chooses to give it away, his critics can't say "look how much less he made with these two movies after Farenheit 9/11".

Yes, this man presents a very liberal perspective. Although he was right on when discussing Bush's failure in business (Farenheight 9/11) before he took office. He has surrounded himself with people whose ideologies have been persistent in deregulating an industry fueled by greed. Can you imagine if a teacher proposed deregulation as a means of classroom management?

@OMG! Ponies!: I rrrrreaaaally don't think Michael Moore would have any trouble getting distribution. His movies always make heap big wampum.
I think releasing it this way has more to do with his politics than any money problems.

I'm all for getting the young crowd to get up and vote, but if you are going to do that, bring up the issues they face without hiding your own political agenda into it.
If you want to vote Obama, thats fine.
If you want to vote McCain, thats fine.
But if the purpose of your new movie is to get the young people to vote(period.), then do just that, nothing more.

@Juggrnott:
Which is as true as saying Republican shills--say, like GadgetPlay--would be happy if we had a one party Republican Dictatorship. As long as the party continues to stand for your beliefs and the other parties don't, sure you would be happy if that one party were in power all the time. Problem with single party rule, or a dictatorship (which are, by the way, very different entities), is that those ideal quickly fall apart, and the party, or the dictator, or maybe his son, will no longer stand for your beliefs no matter how fanatic you are.
Except, maybe GadgetPlay.
As for people suggesting the "get out your vote" efforts tend to be skewed Democratic; well duh. Because they know that younger generation overwhelmingly support liberal views. If you had a completely neutral stance and you got out the younger votes, you'd still be favoring Democrats, especially in a race like this year's.
That's why you don't see any Republicans trying to get out the young votes outside of sunday schools. As far as I'm considered, so long as anybody over 18 should have a say in who gets to be our president, and by the law of nature, the future of the country belongs to the younger generation, I will support any efforts to get the younger votes out over no effort at all.

@willyboy: "deregulating an industry fueled by greed" what a load. This has all been brought on by regulation, and this administration has bloated the size of the government to the point of economic collapse.
Greed=self interest. People acting in their own self-interest=mutually beneficial trade. government intervention prevents both parties from benefitting.

I am sure Michael Moore - one of the few folks with the balls to tell the truth - is losing a lot of sleep over the opinions of a bunch of geeks who think they know everything.
You are going to tell the world who should be allowed to speak? Wow, we havn't had one of those for ... oh wait - we have one now.

@Jon B.:
Now where in the hell did you get that idea? :-p
But seriously, there's nothing you can do that is not political in root nature; even choosing to be apolitical is a political stance. So suggesting that what someone like Moore is doing is somehow hypocritical or worse yet *wrong* because he has a political bias is rubbish, unless you disagree with the basic premise of what he's doing--getting out the young votes--is *wrong*. If someone like--oh, say, GadgetPlay--doesn't like what Moore's doing because he's liberally biased, then I say they should go out and recruit young voters with a neocon bias.
'Course, they won't do it because they know that the chances are, they'll recruit more liberal votes than neocon votes, irregardless of their own biases ;-p

@GadgetPlay: Posted this in the wrong place: Walt Kelly was a liberal cartoonist. Not exactly a great philosopher but you were on the right track. P.S. To anyone interested, you can donate to Al Franken's campaign and see what he has to say here . He's a passionate, intelligent man who really does his homework on the right. The GOP really, really hates him, though, and they fight eight different kinds of dirty so he may need our help.

@Dearhaw: Hell yes he's wrong b/c he's continually lying about issues to get people to vote. As far I'm concerned, no one should do anything to get out the vote. Either people live up to the responsibility and privilege of voting in our republic or shut up b/c you didn't take the time to vote. Argue and win people over with facts and ideas. Michael Moore is worst form of vile b/c he's a propagandist. The truth is only secondary to pushing his bile. As a minority, he offends me and my culture and he's completely and totally intolerant.

If you consider F911 a box office fluke (5x times more than Bowling) then his trend is still upwards...as sicko made more than Bowling. For a documentary filmmaker, anyone who knows anything about box office receipts knows that Moore is king. For a documentary, his grosses are unheard of. Regardless of political affiliation, which, I assume, is all you can base your comment on, his films make a shit-ton of money considering they are documentaries.

@s8ist:
Yeah, I was being facetious. However, au contraire, according to many modern dictionaries, "irregardless" now is part of the English lexicon, albeit classified as "informal" ;-)
From the Oxford English Dictionary in OSX:
irregardless |ˌiriˈgärdlis|
adjective & adverb informal
regardless.
ORIGIN early 20th cent.: probably a blend of irrespective and regardless .
USAGE Irregardless, with its illogical negative prefix, is widely heard, perhaps arising under the influence of such perfectly correct forms as : irrespective. Irregardless is avoided by careful users of English. Use regardless to mean 'without regard or consideration for' or 'nevertheless': : I go walking every day regardless of season or weather.
