DIY Scrolling LED Business Cards Miss Point of Business Cards, Still Cool
Posted by Kit Eaton at 11:45 PM on September 3, 2008
Over at Instructables is this DIY project that will let you make your own slender electronic business cards with built-in LED display. They're pretty cool, displaying a number of different scrolling data messages at the push of a button, and apparently cost just about US$5 per card. The "slender" description means you'll have to be good at soldering surface-mount components, though. To me it's a cool project that will impress people, but kinda misses the point of business cards: easily disseminating your contact info. An LCD QR-code business card— now that's something I'd fancy. Head over to Instructables if you've got the LED maker-urge. [Instructables]

Geev what back? :P /Cuban dictator
@Curves: I can't imagine that many people taking these cards seriously anyway. I mean, what if the person or the firm has a ridiculously long name? Who the heck has the patience to wait for Aldermann Krausse Jehozaphat & Weinbalmdemoishenkoff to scroll by? Besides, a lot of guys spent a good $30 on business card holders that won't be compatible, and when the battery runs out, they'll forget where the heck they got that piece of plastic from! lol

Exactly Curves!
Now if this was an E-PAPER, the story would
be a different one.

The problem with this, (one of them) is that the full information isnt viewable at any given time on the screen and scrolls faster than most people can record it. To get the full web site address I would have to watch it 5 times.

If you live in a country like Denmark (I suspect - everywhere)then you will NOT be seen as cool if you wear one of those.
As a matter of fact, you´ll be seen like a dweeb with no life if you get caught wearing a device like that.
I remember the people who wore those as namebadges, oh boy....I didn´t recall a single person daring to walk over to talk with them at the big conventions at all, then again...those who wore those really did look like society loners....sad...sad.sad!
Just to make you feel comfortable, I can tell you I bought one of those too, just for the inner-geek in me, but you won´t get me to wear it ;) It simply says "looser" all over.

I'd love to see a salesman with these cards.
"Here's my card. Ok, now give it back, these cards cost five bucks a pop!"

@Git Em SteveDave is starlost: What if someone had epilepsy? Could reading this business card give someone a seizure?
"Hey Bob what's wrong with Mark?"
"I think my business card sent him into a seizure"
"ooh..."

I just think its such a waste of time for people to try and re-invent what's already working properly!
I mean, it's great to see tech developments, and sometimes experimenting it with these creations are necessary.
But c'mon... who in the world would use this thing?? Get a BT phone, even a printed barcode version, for data capture...
