DIY Mini Multi-Platform Console Mod
Posted by Sean Fallon at 4:00 AM on September 3, 2008
Retro gaming fans that enjoy a good DIY project will certainly get a kick out of the latest work of a console modder that goes by the name "Bacteria." Basically, he has devised a way to cannibalise those Plug-n-Play TV gaming units into interchangeable cartridges that can be plugged into a single, portable system (he also claims that a GBA add-on is currently in the works). Unfortunately, Bacteria continues to be uninterested in details like aesthetics and ergonomics (as we first noticed in his previous project), but that is something you can probably correct should you decide to take on the mod yourself. Hit the link for the complete instructions. [Modded by Bacteria]

I'll file this under "Just because you can doesn't mean you should".

@DigitalReaper: I agree.. He needs to attend the Ben Heck class of modding. Excellent concept, poor execution

I read about this initially over at Hackaday.
For a DIY it's awesome.
The basic concept behind it is really quite simple, in that you're just connecting power, control, video and audio lines to the boards in his DIY carts.
It looks comfortable to play on and probably has good battery life too.
Factor in that it's one of a kind and I'd say BIG WIN!
Again, really nice work.
@DigitalReaper: The same thing can be said about comments on Gizmodo.

Love that black masking tape finish. hot.
Seriously tho, like this think is going to make it past airport security. Youre better off putting it up your ass and going into a Pakistani Prison.

If you can't do it good, don't do it at all.

I would just load up a 16gb micro sd card with games and make a hand held. Simpler. I would though make it around that size but with better buttons.

@--Tito--: If you were to load an sd card with games, your system would have to be able to decode whatever is on the sd card and likely have an emulator of some sort -- basically the gamepark handhelds.
The benefit of this is that the shell only does audio video output and analog input -- the cartridge does the rest. Agreed it doesn't look great, but is a good concept.

@strider_mt2k: You prove there is some intelligent life on this site. Pity about most others here with their ridiculous comments.

strider_mt2k - Congrats, yours is to date only one of two intelligent comments on this thread here! Thanks for your comments BTW.
Cordfucious v 2.0.1 - If you visit the BenHeck forums you will see I am a very active member there. It is a fantastic site with great members - friendly.
Not everyone has fancy CNC or vacuum forming or special bondo knowledge; I make systems out of flat sheets of perspex. Perhaps you can do better (my guide shows you how to make such a system after all)?? My skills are innovation and implementation rather than chic.
The system all works very well actually; the case disassembles in seconds (4 screws), buttons feel nice and responsive, d-pad works responsively (although I will be changing it for a larger NES d-pad as more suitable for adult hands), screen is a good size, sound is good, cartridges insert easily but stay in place, yet also remove easily; and the carts work first time when put into the system. Pretty good for a home-made one-of-a-kind system!
I am sure you can't be that shallow as to take beauty as skin deep? Yes, no??
