Di-Cycle: A Bike That Travels Over Land and Water
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:20 AM on September 11, 2008
Right off the bat the Di-Cycle design is eye-catching. Imagine the looks you would get pedaling this down the road, smashing into cars and bumping old ladies off the sidewalk. Now imagine the looks you would get when you turn sharply toward the neighbourhood pool, ride in and mow down all of the swimmers flailing around in the water trying desperately to escape. Apparently that pleasant dream is possible with this bizarre looking contraption. Unfortunately, you are going to have to rein in your bicycle blood lust for now. The Di-Cycle is only in the design phase at the moment. [Core 77 via ffffound via Likecool via Ubergizmo]

Does anyone else think that from the photo it looks like it would kinda lean as you turn? That's the impression I got anyway. My concerns are like others have said, the breaks and that it looks way too big so it would take too much space etc..

do you need a certain speed or does any speed qualifies to travel over the water
what happens to you when you turn in too fast?
Hmm it looks like you got much air resistance

@nutbastard: That is an awesome image. I am hoping the brakes work by pulling back on the handle so as you panic when the thing gets out of control you pull them harder and harder and make a bad situation worse. For those of you in San Francisco here lets chip in and buy one and take turns riding it down California street from the top of the hill.

what i wanna know is, if you hit the brakes fast enough, will you do a full loop forward?
nutbastard
Xavoc
Posted 6:45 AM 11/9/08
So, what are the odds of you picking up enough momentum that when you do apply the brakes, it just locks the passenger compartment in place, and you tumble down the hill like one of those giant inflatable balls?

@reddingofish:
its a problem that the segway has as well - no suspension. not comfortable over bumps, although the sheer diameter of the wheels on this thing should do a lot for that... assuming someones enough of an asshole to build and ride one of these in, you know, reality.

@McLucky: Until one wheel brakes better than the other and you end up perpenDI-Cyclular to the road, and flip over onto your side. I imagine cost-wise it'd be a bit like laying your bike down on the pavement.

@DARSFOG: Awesome, I just imagined careening down a hill and trying to successfully make a turn by braking one wheel and not the other! Upside is the huge wheels double as a roll cage when you do try this.

@DARSFOG: Right, how do you apply the brakes? By pulling back on the handle, you know, like you would if you were gripping the handles tightly for leverage when climbing a steep hill?

It doesn't look like it can float either. Just saying.
@McLucky: But if you apply a break to one wheel, than you will turn in the direction of which ever side you applied the brakes to.

yeah because everyone wants a device with the inherent stability of parallel tires, embellished with all the style of an apple-designed segway, which has the width of a small car, which weighs a hundred pounds and is human powered.
if they build these things, they'll make segways look like iPods in terms of sales. this, of course, would be the Zune of transportation.

Err, this is new ?
Dicycles were invented in 1870 , and then you have to read about the Panjandrum which was similar but had two rockets attached to the wheels and a 4,000 pound bomb in the middle!

It would suck to ride that thing. You would have to peddle like crazy just to get it to move. The gear ratio between the wheel and the drive gear would be horrible.

Actually dicycles are pretty fun. I made a two-seater:
and later a simpler one which didn't float:
The gear ratio is whatever you design it to be, it doesn't have to be low just because the wheels are big.
