Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Has Hidden Built-In 3G
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:00 AM on September 5, 2008
When Michael Dell mentioned yesterday that he thinks telcos will subsidise netbooks to sell integrated 3G services, he wasn't quite talking out of his ass—an unmentioned feature of the Inspiron Mini 9 is an integrated 3G card. The first carrier to sell the Mini with 3G is Vodafone in the UK. No carrier announcements in the US yet, but since it's HSDPA (assumedly, because Vodafone UK is, and they aren't letting you pick your 3G card) AT&T would pretty much be your only option here. Pretty nice trick up your sleeve, Dell. [PC Mag, Pocket Lint]

It's definitely AT&T with a WWAN module. SIM goes under the battery.

I seriously doubt all machines will come with the 3G card, I suspect it will be a 3G card SLOT, but not the card itself.

So could I stick the sim card from, say, my phone in there, since I have an unlimited 3G data plan with AT&T, and use that? Because that would be totally sweet.
I really want one of these but I'm afraid the battery life just isn't enough.

Cool, but has anyone bought a retail model, cracked it open and actually looked for the 3G card?

That computer look like it's from 1998. Kind of thick, innit?

Quite a few reviews say that there's a slot marked WWAN in the "expansion bay" for want of a better term. No actual card in there yet.

I don't think I could afford paying for 2 3G data plans but I still want one.

Go to: [www.notebookreview.com]
There is a picture of the bottom open, there is an extra mini PCI express slot for a WWAN card, with antennas already ran for which ever card you choose to drop in.

So far I believe the Dell is the only device with a open pcie slot and simcard port for 3G cards? Can anyone check the wrap sheet and confirm or deny? I believe I will just continue to use my 1330, which i pretty portable, until the second round of devices come through. (or the coupon clipper savings start kicking in..yaaawwnnn)

Yeah, I believe they are a bit off basis. The WWAN slot is clearly marked. I have a M1330 and its the same. One of the main reasons I was waitng on the Dell, was that I wanted to pull my 5520 3G ATT mini pcie card out of my 1330 , and put it in a netbook. That is what they mean by integrated.
Sadly, the pricing model REALLY sux. The ONLY saving grace for deal, is that unlike pretty much all of the other devices, Dell offer financing. The high end model is pricey, but financing makes the dell a bit easier to stomach. (Understanding that its not alot different than just charging one of the other devices ona credit card lol)

I heard a most laptops will be coming out with some sort of wireless/3G support. This would definitely benefit those with laptops who aren't around a hotspot!

@Benitocarmona:what was that about my money pocket?
@purple-pillows: whaaat??
I'm sorry, I don't know much about 3g in netbooks, or laptops, or anything other than a cellphone. Are you guys saying I could put my AT&T sim in one of these WWAN 3g cards and use my iPhone's 3g plan on an Inspiron mini?

Watch out. When you get a subsidized device and find your only path to get the applications you want leads straight through a tollbooth, don't be surprised.

I want a regular hard drive option for the Dell mini (nano?). I'm not excited by the prospect of having more space on my iPhone than my sub-notebook. Not cool. (Acer Aspire One still wins)

Oh, wait. Never mind. That would actually make sense! Mwahahaha!

I have AT&T laptop connect now. It can be done, but AT&T does not support Linux. And using it with Linux or Apple gives you less features. I have unlimited access on both my phone and laptop card, and I use a significant amount of data on my laptop. AT&T says they can tell when you are tethering or using a cell SIM in a laptop card and will charge you for it. (But generally, when you're tethering you don't use that much data overall so they don't know I guess.) And, most of the time I'm not in a 3G area, so I only get slightly faster than dial up speeds. As a travel computer, the only reason I haven't bought an Eee is because I can't use my laptop connect with it, if this fixes that, I might break down and buy a Dell. I'm from the Consumerist board, I don't know if Dells are evil over here.

This would be awesome if
a) They release the 8.10 version of Ubuntu NetBook remix (it will have 3G support)
b) I got 3G service at all here.
