Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Available Now: Windows XP $399, Ubuntu $349
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 3:47 PM on September 4, 2008
The way Dell introduced the Inspiron Mini 9 was pretty inspired, so it's almost been depressing watching the steady stream of leaks deflate it into a now familiar device, even though it's only being released today. As leaked, inside is an Intel Atom Diamondville processor and it has a 1024x600 LED-backlit screen with 4, 8 and 16GB SSD options (plus you get 2GB free online storage at Box.Net) and about three hours of battery life. Only the Windows XP version is available now for US$399, in black or white—the US$349 Ubuntu flavour, along with the rest of the six-colour rainbow are a few weeks away.
MEET YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND: DELL'S INSPIRON MINI 9

Hmm . . . it looks OK. Not great with such things as the lack of function keys and the puzzling webcam options, though, and not such a deal that it poses a major threat to competitors such as Asus, MSI, and Acer.
It is disappointing to see the Linux versions including lesser hardware than the Windows XP versions and it is even more disappointing to see the ridiculous and insulting comparative valuation of Ubuntu and Windows XP on the "SOCIAL BUTTERFLY" image with the woman resting a cup of coffee on the arm of a sofa:
"Look for Ubuntu Linux 8.04 with custom Dell interface when customizing your Inspiron Mini 9, or upgrade to Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP."
That is an upgrade? I think not. It is a different option, sure, but calling Windows XP an upgrade to Ubuntu is dubious at best. Throw the two on equal mini-notebook hardware and I'll take the Ubuntu, thanks.
The "MEET THE MINI" link under that text leads to a "We're Sorry" 404-ish page with a "The page you have requested may no longer exist on Dell.com" message. Karma strikes Dell for insulting Ubuntu in favor of Windows XP. Ha ha.

Yeah the Ubuntu configuration sucks. When you add all of the stuff in to equal the base Windows version, they end up being damn near the same price anyway. You don't even have a webcam on the standard Linux option.

I must agree with @purple-pillows, I really DO NOT feel comfortable with a company which sells a particular product "sponsoring" a section which includes their products, this is the Gamespot/Kane&Lynch fiasco just waiting to happen.
More on topic, I have ot give Dell credit for giving the Linux model a lot of options, but it still seems like if you bump all the specs to the equivalent windows version it should still be cheaper, unless Dell is paying $5 for a Windows license (not that I would be surprised if they were)...

I was a little disappointed when I looked this unit up on Dell's site. For what you are getting, I feel that it is a little too much. I would rather pay a little more and get the Acer One with a lot more hard drive, and more standard memory. Dell blew their chance to hurt the competition by pricing their unit comparably.

You can get the 16GB version with XP for $440.00 that's a pretty nice deal. 16 GB is actually gobs of room for an XP machine. I've got a 4GB EEEPC and with a slimmed down XP installation, Unreal Tournament, MAME, Photoshop 7, Office XP (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a few odds and ends, and I've still got almost 2GB free (though I did compress the "Programs" folder). I'd definitely hop on a machine like this if my wife wouldn't divorce me for my uncontrollable appetite for gadgets and toys (she's pissed off enough that I just bought a remote controlled 1:16 Heng Long Tiger tank to go along with the 1:16th Panzer III I got a couple of months ago).

Man oh man.
This thing practically IS my B130 simply made smaller with no optical drive, Expresscard slot, or wide screen.
Combined with the fact that you STILL need to carry a power supply and perhaps a mouse it means you're only carrying slightly less stuff than if you were toting something more substantial anyway.
THAT'S the breaking point for me at that price, and the reason I went for an Internet Tablet instead.
My N810 can support all kinds of external googaws, but they aren't required to get the most out of the device.

@UofITom: Yeah, and Dell would make less money on those 7 than if you just bought the one at $350, so really, to them, you can go to hell. Do you really think Dell has a 60%+ gross margin on their products? Last time I checked, it was more like 17%, and that's factoring in things like high margin digital TVs, printers, and high-end computers. Little laptops like this are going to have crap for margin to begin with.

@Monsterdog You would think that the Linix version would be cheaper. It makes sense.
But, I think behind the scenes a conversation went something like this:
Computer companies = CC, Microsoft = ]:)
CC The burgeoning netbook market can't support Vista, please continue licensing XP. pretty please, with sugar on top.
]:) But Vista is the future. We see no reason to continue licensing XP. Besides, some wise guy may try to install it on a desktop, even after we decided (for him) that Vista is better.
CC But... but... well... Vista is a high-priced hardware hooker and building a Vista compatible netbook would kill our profit margin. That's why we've sold some with Linux
]:) Linux! How dare you go pimp one of Unix's girls. If we agree to license XP you better guarantee our girl makes money! Charge more for the Linux version of your products or we'll pull all of your licenses, then see how many of your would be johns look elsewhere.

Are you sure this can last for three hours when used just for Word processing? I am looking at several mini laptops at [www.pressdigital.com.au] and was attracted to the ASUS 8.9" EEEPC 900with a 4-cell battery and promises 2.8 to 3 hours of battery life too. Aside from the size of course, the white color of this laptop caught my attention and it's the very same reason why the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 caught my eye. I hope the insides including the keyboard are white also like the eeePC

Another thing is the Bluetooth 2.1 Capability runs $20 extra even with the highest level config available. I mean shouldn't that be pretty much standard for a netbook that is built for high mobility?

What? €399 on the Irish site with no option for Ubuntu or anything else. Thats $577! Dell, you have lost the plot my son. Acer Aspire one has less memory for sure but is less then half the price.
