Creative Special Event Due September 17th, Invite Teases X-fi Products
Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:19 PM on September 12, 2008
Looks like Creative is getting set to unveil something new on September 17th: invites have gone out for a special event, bearing this mysterious image. Those darkened shapes in the image bear an X-fi logo, but that, apart from the "I am heard everywhere" slogan is all the info there is on exactly what's going to be demonstrated. Dare we connect it with Creative's internet tablet/camera/pmp device patent from yesterday? I think we dare. [Thanks Brandon!]

"Are you hear yet?" Somewhere, a copywriter is getting fired. I know it's supposed to be an awful, awful play on words, but it comes across as a hasty internet translation at best. AT BEST. Other than that, I'm a huge Creative fan, and this advert-transgression will be forgiven if the product is awesome. Which it certainly will be.

creative won me over with their whole vista driver debacle never buying from them ever.

That patent is very old, it's not coming out....

Just let it be something like Vision:M, but thinner and with more capacity. It's sad that it's still one of the best conventional PMP's out there.

@slibville:
Well, it certainly stirred emotion in you. Hence, effective advertising. Somewhere, someone is sitting back in his/her seat saying, "my work here (or hear...) is done." < BURN

How about a USB 5.1 Audio wireless card?

You mean the same company that sold me an audio card with their new, hot audio processor on it that didn't have the new, hot audio processor on it? I bought one of the X-Fi Xtreme Audio cards, advertised with the EMU10K chip, because it was the bottom-of-the-line and I didn't need bundled software. Guess what, it was a completely different card and didn't have a processor on it. So yeah, these guys are on the "do not buy" list forever.
Anyone who installed vista deserved what they got :P.

What will likely happen is this new product will be awesome, it will win awards and best others in the same category but won't gain ground just like the ipod vs zen in 2006, sadness.

@rospaya: my thoughts exactly.

@Acemonster: It's not "effective" advertising by any stretch of the definition when it makes people not only avoid buying the product but also go out of their way to discourage others from buying it!

@logicalnoise: Vista driver? I'm still holding my breath for stable XP drivers (for Creative/Emu crapware released years after XP became the predominate O/S).

I was hoping they were just integrating Xfi chips into consumer devices. Car stereos, HT receivers maybe. I guess a PMP with corrective audio processing makes sense though.

I know "hear" is supposed to be clever... but it just looks grammatically incorrect.

don't count on it. there were rumors the X-fi "PMP" were scrapped due to technical difficulties, the ZEN X-Fi being the only one who made it out.
the picture actually looks like a laptop. creative recently teamed with Acer to produce a very powerful desktop which included X-fi. maybe this is a laptop with it?
which in all honesty would be great because the female orgasm has been lacking so much with my onboard sound.

Screw Creative. Their product is nothing special and after the whole Vista nightmare they created with their drivers I refuse to ever buy their product again.
Not to mention the Creative reps that treated people horribly in their support forums!!!
I found the onboard audio on my EVGA mainboards to have EQUAL sound and MORE features. The biggest gain to switching to on-board was the ability to TEST my Logitech THX Optical Out speakers from within windows. You can't do that with creative drivers. Creative claims it is NOT possible to send such a signal directly from Windows....liars!

Hope it's something good. I'm starting to lose interest with Creative. I loved the ZVM but since then they have't released anything big. That's not to say the ZEN is bad or anything. It's a solid player, but Creative needs a real flagship PMP and hopefully what they unveil will be it. Otherwise I'm setting my sights on the Samsung players and the iriver spinn.
btw, IF it is a PMP, my money is on that it'll have a touch screen!
