Circuit City Continues Death Spiral, Really Wants You to Stop Calling It 'Circuit Shitty'
Spurred by its latest quarter of dismal failure—a net loss of $US239.2 million—Circuit City has instigated a "comprehensive analysis of its business," which will "start with improving the customer experience in our stores," says new mayor James Marcum. (For comparison, a hard hit for Best Buy this quarter was a $US202 million profit.)
So, while they're actively shopping for buyers of the beleaguered company since the Blockbuster deal fell through, you can probably expect more of its new Best Buy-like "The City" stores. I still trip balls every time I see the one smack next to Best Buy in midtown Manhattan. It's gotta be the most painful block in the city.
That said, the customer service in most Circuit City stores does seem to outpace Best Buy's in crappiness, which is largely because they don't pay starting employees as much as they used to, a few employees have told me. I still go there occasionally because they undercut Best Buy's prices with some frequency, but sometimes I wonder if I wouldn't mind paying a buck or two more for slightly less aggravation, at least until the cheapskate kicks in. @SpiralGray: This ia a very goot point except BB is doing OK and they have the same drones.
Usually when you ask for help they just look at the cards and read them to you. Seriously? Don't you think I already did that and didn't find the info I wanted?

Gasp, did you also know that you can buy the exact same Zune at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Radioshack, Meijer, and a bunch of other stores?
I personally have no problem with Circuit City, but I tend to buy things from Best Buy more....even though the employees bug the crap out of you every few minutes: "Can I help you with something?"

I just assume the people running these stores have no clue. What is interesting is they seem to have a wider range of desirable products. Here are some of my problems if someone at CC is listening:
1) Stores are not inviting. You have to walk by some crappy products or open box as soon as you walk in. Stick that crap in the back behind the computers.
2) Get rid of Verizon only. Weather you like them or not it is consumer unfriendly.
3) More in stock car and home audio(BB usually can't compete here) Maybe add more front projectors one can actually see.
4) CC usually has a better music section to me but they never advertise it. The trend is more towards though and the CC movie section sucks.
5) Get some more draws where BB has gone astray. Like $5 or $10 HDMI cables or add cheaper cables in general. When faced with a BB DVD player for $85 and a $60 cable I would go to CC for a $90 player and a $10 cable. (I would really go the monoprice but you get the idea)
This is help is provided free of charge and we need competition.

They're trying to become MORE like Best Buy?! They should try to become LESS like Best Buy. Compete with the Walmarts, Costcos, and Neweggs, make themselves the goto place for anything electronic because they have the best price in town. Instead they will probably raise prices and try to sell service plans and installations constantly in your face. They can just go bankrupt, Best Buy is profitable because a certain type of person shops there, and they most won't care enough to switch to CC. What they need to do is get the people who don't like Best Buy or CC in their stores. Dump a lot of the salespeople and get more variety of inventory.

The problem with all the big-box stores is that the sales people don't give a c**p about their chosen profession. I hate to sound like an old fogey, but when I worked in retail (camera sales, about 25 years ago) I made it a point to take the owner's manual for each product home and read it so I could help a customer make decisions. Nowadays you're lucky if the sales droid has even read the shelf plaque. I was in a Circuit City a few months back. I was looking at TVs, and heard this exchange between a salesman and an older gentlemen trying to decide between two televisions:
Customer: From what I've read the Mits and Samsung are both pretty good.
Sales Droid: Both the Mits and the Samsung are great TVs.
Customer: The Mits seems to be a bit sharper.
Sales Droid: Yeah, the Mits tend to be a bit sharper.
Customer: But the Samsung seems brighter.
Sales Droid: Yeah, the Samsungs tend to be a bit brighter.
Bwaaaak, Sales Droid want a cracker. I could bring a parrot into the store and get just as much insight from it.

That's too bad. I've favored C.C. over Beast Buy for a while now. The prices are sometimes a little better. Usually I can walk in, get what I need, pay for it and get out with minimal hassle. B.B.'s prices suck and there's always a line wrapped around the store with like one or two registers open. I stood in it one time and realized what I was going to purchase wasn't worth the wait so I left empty handed.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: BB will price match any competitor. The guy at CC laughed in my face when I mentioned price matching. Granted that could just have been another reflection of CC's exceedingly high quality customer service. O_O
But basically, what it comes down to is that you just have to be aware of prices.
It's kinda shady, but I've caught BB's website listing 'instore price' as being cheaper than they are actually charging 'in-store'. But in those cases, I didn't have any trouble (thankfully) convincing them to price-match themselves. O_o

Maybe I just have a really good store because I've never had any problems at all. I prefer CC over best buy any day of the week. In my mind it is the difference between wal-mart and target. I will gladly pay a few dollars more to avoid the people and the horrible store atmosphere. Not to mention that anytime I have bought any big ticket item from my local CC I can usually get a few dollars knocked off by haggling a bit. The employees are always friendly, the store is well lit and inviting, I can clearly see where everything is located, management always handles any problems I have quickly, and the staff is knowledgable. Not to say that Best Buy doesn't have some of these same qualities but I would much rather spend my money at CC.

I do agree with the long circuit city check-out times. But I'd rather go to circuit city over best buy lately anyway. I typically know as much or more then MOST of both stores sales associates anyway. But at least at circuit city you have a much better chance of finding a deal. I've used their internet checkout for deals on MANY occasions while in the case of Best buy, I find an internet deal and they are completely unwilling to honor it. I had $80 in gift cards to "shitty buy" that I held on to for 9 months because I couldn't find a deal there. I ended up using them for a work purchase so I could get reimbursed with cash and then go and spend it at CC. STUPID Best buy.

Just to add to my last post... I'll shop at whichever one is cheaper and has the item I want. I tend to favor CC because BestBuy ticked me off years ago when they wouldn't match a price from their own web site (even though I could buy it online and pick it up in the store). My main point was that you can't count on either of them to actually have knowledgeable sales people. BB is a little better for higher-end stuff because they've got the Magnolia area where the sales people are, in my experience, a little more professional.

The CC here in Burbank has gone from bad to worse. They used to have the partial walls that divided the store up into departments, allowed them to hang stuff and merchandise...
They stripped all that out - and now it's like a big empty room with crap on little low shelves all over. They've reduced their stereo and television stock levels to the degree that now it feels like they have no stock at all... like it's the last weeks of a liquidation sale...
such an unpleasant environment.
I bought a camera on their website for local pickup (first time in the store in months) and was shocked... even the process of picking it up was excruciating... took forever, then they gave me a box that looked like it was sat on... "It's okay - really..."
So, to give me a "better box" they had to do a return and resell...
it was awful. I resolved that was my last CC purchase. it's really pointless.
I refuse to go to BBuy any more, cause they just suck... and don't get me started on Fry's...

@Jon B.:
BB sucks balls!!! Worst job I ever had. They are timecard Nazi's. They don't rule by the +/- 5 minute rule. You MUST MUST MUST punch in and out on the SECOND. Which means, whoever you are helping, you MUST pass them on to someone else then go wait by the time clock for it to roll over to the exact minute you need to clock out.
Granted, this was a while ago. However, when I worked there, I actually got WRITTEN UP for being TOO GOOD! Yup, you read that right! I worked in the computer department (which, btw, was managed by someone who nothing about computers he only had management skills) and while we didn't work off commissions we did have GOALS in which to reach. After all if Jo Blow sells 100 computers and you only sold 10..... anyway, not to toot my own horn or anything but I was WAY over qualified for the position and that stood out. Just imaging walking into a BB today and finding someone that ACTUALLY knows what he or she was talking about. Someone who gave you the TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH. Plus, gave you some damn good advice as well! What would you do? Fall over backwards? Anyway, I had people coming in asking for me specifically. Management got wind of that and assumed I was PIMPING myself out. Well, that's a NO NO at BB. You can't have customers ask for you when they come back. Well, I WAS NOT doing that. When it continued, I got written up. When the store manager pushed the write up towards me and told me to sign it I told him to go f himself and walked out. They mailed me my last check.
All I gotta say is, Fxxx working for Best Buy and yes, I still shop there...

If it didn't take half an hour of playing hide and seek with the employees to get someone to help, I'd go to CC more often. In Best Buy it's usually the other way around. If I even remotely make eye contact with an employee (and they're always everywhere) they ask if I need any help. I'm not a huge fan of Best Buy (no, I don't want a warranty on that or a subscription to a magazine, just ring up my sale please), but they do get the fact that helping customers is in some way important.

I hate going to Circuit City and don't usually go unless I see something in the weekly ad that sparks my interest and may be worth fighting for. I hate how the video game prices are soooo off. Just install one of those self-scanners if you don't want to update them! What really killed it for me was when I spent a half hour talking to every manager in the store to get the advertised price on something (with actual picture in ad) and failing. Sure, I understand certain ambiguities at times with the ad, but when the ad has a picture of the item with the price and is a valid date, and the computer has a different price because it wasn't properly updated, I expect an over-ride and get the advertised price, not to be told off and belittled because I "obviously don't know how to read the ad correctly."

- Manager called Fry's confirmed availability but then told me it was below cost and ain't gonna do it.
- I left and spent my money at Fry's
- Circuit Shitty fits.

I've had Circuit City managers tell me on more than one occasion that they would rather not make a sale than try to negotiate pricing on a product. I would then ask them, "wouldn't it be better to make $10 than $0?", and the would literally say, "no, it's not. we'd rather not make the sale."
No wonder they're losing money.

@Jon B.:
Unlike JEmlay, who I must say must have had either the worst Managers or something, because I've worked at Best Buy for over 3 years at 4 different stores, and have never had anything like that. I started when I was 18 in computers at $9.50 an hour. Moved to Best Buy for Business, Home Theater Senior, and now Geek Squad Senior, and I have to say they treat you well. I've never had shitty managers, I got a raise every 3-6 months, an extra $3500 a semester for being in school and working full-time, good benefits, and really good pay (I'm at $16.75 currently, and yes I could make more at the apple store, but I don't feel like driving that far. I can walk to work currently.). The only shitty thing is the employees that consider themselves god's gift to Best Buy.

@thetickler: I forgot how bad they were since the only one I've been to in the last 4 years is the Union Square one.

Every Circuit City, except the one in Union Square in Manhattan, smells like dirty nuts, especially in the vestibule when you walk through the doors. Jesus, it just sneaks up out of nowhere like bam.

when you sold cameras 25 years ago a new camera came out what every 2 years? you maybe had half a dozen models to choose from? Now a new camera comes out every week, there is at least 3 dozen at my best buy alone and that doesn't include video camera's. Oh yeah the Camera people have to be trained in Wireless as well which means 3 dozen cell phones and their carriers. Your manuals consisted of 30 pages, these are 130 pages in 9 point fonts. If you think retail today, and retail 25 years ago have anything in common your joking. On top of that most of these workers are in school, reading books, not manuals. That way they don't have to put up with your sh*t for the rest of their lives ;)

Well that sucks. The only other electronics mega store left would be BestBuy. (And Fry's but they're barely any on the East coast) And BestBuy is freaking overpriced. The same TV at BestBuy cost $200 more than at Circuit City!!

SpiralGray: You probably worked on commission as well which completely changes the amount of effort that you are willing to put into the job. When you make commission it is in your best interest to "help a customer" because you are also helping yourself. Circuit City's stock tanked a number of years ago after they took the commission away. Best Buy spends about 10 times as much on advertising as Circuit City as well. I'd like to say that I'm surprised because I do favor Circuit City, but I'm just not.

@pb4ugoout: Actually, in the Japanese "alphabet", it's sa (sah) shi (she) su (sue) se (seh) so. The sound they use for cir is sa. So, Circuit City would be sahkitto shiti.

@SpiralGray: With all due respect dude, frack customers like you! I hate hate HATE when guys like this wander in wanting to know about a certain product only to stare blankly afterward and ask "Well, if you wuz me, which one wud ju buy?". Gaddam it, weren't you listening? I'm not here to make up your mind for you; open your head and think! What you want is a freakin consultant. You don't want information, you want someone to tell you what to buy. This is why I'm not surprised when people complain about being taken to the cleaners at places like this.
Fact is, there are a lot more retail droids out there with more important info than there are informed consumers. Its the lazy consumers looking that kill helpful employees.

I helped open the first "The City" store in Manhattan and it was really fun. I love my job for a while. The environment was good, and my pay was awesome [firedog]...
...after a while, I think everyone would agree that it all went down the tubes. I still like the new concept though. Just a matter of getting the right people to bring out the potential. Treating them right can sometimes help too.

As someone who currently works at Circuit City, I can say honestly that we do try to get it right with customer service. Understaffing can unfortunately make it difficult to help every customer, but we certainly do try. I don't challenge that there are employees that don't care for their job because it's not what they plan do to do. But guess what, that's every retail or service job. It's not a unique thing to Circuit City! The sad part is that consumers/customers pay for that ambivalence. What I do challenge is that the assumption that since retail employs a generally younger staff, they don't know anything. Generally speaking, Circuit has a very extensive sales training on whichever products/department they are meant to sell. I'm 28 and have worked at Circuit City selling TVs and Home Audio for 4 years. I survived the layoff because I was getting paid what I was supposed to be getting paid and was not over the cap. And let me tell you guys, I get paid nicely for the work I do, which is also why I actually do my best give people accurate information about what they want and get them what they need. Phil Schoonover is finally gone and hopefully it's not too late to return our sinking ship to the surface. Either way, I'm going to do my job the same and make sure to correct any misinformation customers get from other stores, sell them what they need, and make sure they enjoy it afterwards. Time to get ready for work.

Even though i hate Circuit City, my biggest purchases have been from them. They seem to always have great financing deals like 0% for 24 months. On top of that, they normally have prices just a bit under Best Buy. I know BB price-matches, but the financing by CC is key. Some things i feel CC needs to do that would make it a better shopping experience: -hire more knowledgable and presentable employees who don't look like they should be stealing the stuff they sell -get rid of the dark carpeting and fixtures. A brighter store makes people feel more comfortable, thus they stay longer and buy more goods. -Make a main checkout like BB. The "scattered registers" where the employees are never available are very annoying. -Get a better selection of products, or remove empty shelving. The empty shelves make you feel like they are going out of business (which i think they are!) -Remove the tint from the front vestibules. The stores always look dark from the outside...very uninviting The list can just keep going....but i'm not a paid consultant...so that's all the feedback im giving!

@mrbofus: Think of it on the management POV. Allowing you a negotiation would allow other customers to negotiate, resulting in, many cases, losing profit. Sure he'd be making $10 off of you, but the next negotiation he might be forced to lose $30! Plus CCity has a "No Negotiations" policy. From working in retail, the customers that ask for discounts are the ones that really piss off the associates. "WHOOP-DEE-FUCKING-DOO" you are buying a product. Why should you get a discount while other hard-working people don't and are perfectly content with buying the floor price? Maybe you are too poor to afford it?
(Btw I sent this as a quest post earlier so I apologize if this appears twice)

They need to do what Best Buy has done: advertise that they repair computers, and start selling "all the best brands". Apple, Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, Acer, etc. As well as parts

I can't say that I would be surprised by their lack of competition over best buy. Their image in their stores is certainly lackluster in comparison, and their prices don't scream "come buy from me". I had a chance to talk to one of the staff at a local store who told me the incentives thet have to upsell and/or sell period are very insignificant.
