Cell Processors to Go 45nm in '09; Smaller, Cheaper PS3s Likely to Follow
Posted by John Mahoney at 10:30 PM on September 22, 2008
Sony and Toshiba announced that they had successfully shrunk the 65nm cell down to 45nm earlier this year, and now thanks to Japan's Nikkan Kogyo, we now have a date for mass production: 2009. At a 40% reduction in power consumption, the shrunken Cell will generate less heat, which would help the PS3 to lose some of its piano-black bulk in a slim version. Cheaper production costs also means more $$ for Sony (or price drops for us). This could also lead to wider adoption of Cell technology in HD upscaling, which Toshiba is already doing in their SRT-enabled TVs and DVD players (but with their own custom chip). this is BS....
ps1 then the ps1 slim
ps2 then ps2 slim
ps3 then ps3 slim...according to this article
chances are the first ps3 they put out could have already been nice and slim....but then they could milk the public with the fat ones!! bet they had this processor a long time ago...

Will this new chip cause developers to make better games?

Cheaper PS3 would be great 'cause I could get one for my office. That'd be a great way to unwind throughout the day. And with BD support, it'd be pretty sweet.

Come on, Price Drop. I still can't afford a PS3, but if it drops a hundred bucks, I'm gonna go for it.

OR...they can possibly keep the same price, and bring back the emotion chip for backwards compatiblity..
which do you guys prefer? another price drop with no BC..or BC only?

Dont see a price drop happening Sony wants to recoup some of its PS3 losses, plus if it did a price drop below its current price it would causing no end of problems with sales for other Bluray machines. PS3 still has over 80% of the bluray market if the price dropped below other bluray players Sony could end up like Toshiba and be the only manufacturer of bluray

lol, price drop my BUTT! Earliest they'll drop one is probably holiday '09 (or perhaps right before)...doubtful, however.
I'm betting that Sony will be pretty successful this holiday and beginning of next year while maintaining the $400 price tag. So why lower it? They still need to make some $$ off the thing.
A PS3 slim would be HOT, but who really cares. It's a home console and they'll do the same things...

@wahrugene: The cell is strong enough to run software emu some kinda mix of hardware/software, if the pc emulator devs can do it there is no reason the top guys at sony can't

I'll buy a current PS3 used and hack it into a skinny case. F it, mount its guts in the wall behind the TV. YES.
