Canon EOS 50D Hands-on Photos Hit the Web
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:26 PM on September 5, 2008
First we had the leaked info, then some official-looking shots, and now, at last, some proper hands-on images of Canon's upcoming EOS 50D pro-consumer DSLR have hit the intertubes over at Impress. According to the guys there the cam feels a lot like the 40D to hold, but it's a tad easier to grip. It's got a screen that's easier to read, they like the tweaked user interface, the new "creative fully automatic" CA mode, and the 6.3 fps shooting speed (there's an audio file of the cam in action here.) None of that is a surprise, given the evolution heritage of the camera. Check out the gallery, with full images over at the Impress link. Update: Dpreview also has a set of hands-on photos and review, made soon after the 50D's announcement. [Impress]

I've got a 30D right now and the only thing that makes me happy about the 50D announcement, is that it should drive the price of the 40D down!

hmm.. Ive got the 400D aka. XTI.
I could use the HDMI output and a few of the funktions. I wonder if they improved liveview further over the 450D and others thats know to have it. It not that much use as of yet, for what Ive seen,

40D was rated at 6.5 fps continuous, while this one is a smidgen slower at 6.3 fps.
Since the pixel count is higher and the body is essentially the same, the new processor (Digic IV) seems to be considerably faster to preserve the continuous speed.
Some other features that seem to have trickled down, such as AF tuning for individual lenses and new live view AF modes are really tasty.
I'm just glad it's not shiny enough an upgrade to 40D to make me go buy one.

@15sunrises: You and me both. I've been holding onto a Rebel XT that's starting to show its age. The 50D should push the 40D's price from "guilty purchase" to "justifiable"

Just because the flash inst shown as "popped up" in any of the photos you have doesn't mean its not there.

List price (body):
• US: $ 1,299
• EU: € 1,299
Since when was $1 equal to 1€?

This is the first DSLR with the Aps-c size sensor that might convice me that a prosumer/avid enthusiast can get away with out a ff sensor.
Still waiting to see the 5D II though :)

@D_Zarster:
They added Contrast detect AF, as opposed to Phase detect AF currently in both 40D and Xsi/450D, to their Live View, although it's effectiveness is yet to be seen.
One of the great uses of Live View is for macro work. At that level you'll want fine grained control of your focus. This is quite hard while only using the viewfinder and most of the time, in macro you're in a difficult position to use the viewfinder. Live view helps in this regard with the ability to check your focus upto 10x!

@arda:
Actually, the 40D according to reviews only achieved 6.3fps. They got the flack because of this, hence they are now more conservative with this spec.
