Canon 5D Mark II Officially Awesome: 21MP DSLR First to Shoot Full HD Video
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 2:01 PM on September 17, 2008
Easily the most anticipated camera in the galaxy, Canon's 5D Mark II is official, and officially excellent. The full-frame, 21-megapixel DSLR is the first to shoot full HD video, and with Digic 4, Canon is promising low-light performance on par with that of Nikon's D3 and D700 thanks to improved light gathering and noise reduction, with ISO range 100-6400, extendable up to 12,800 and 25,600. Add to that its high speeds and first-in-class video capabilities, and you can tell this camera was worth the agonising wait.
About video: It's 1920x1080 resolution at 30fps—so 1080p/30 by most definitions—for up to 12 minutes of continuous recording, and it'll go 24 minutes shooting SD. Yep, you've got a mini HDMI out port to plug it directly into your HDTV. Output is MPEG-4 with CD-grade audio (16-bit PCM at 44KHz), and unlike the D90, Canon records sound in stereo. Since the SLR mirror flips up to record video (really, the live view feed), you aren't able to lock the focus, but live view has three different focus modes: face detection, quick and colour contrast.
Hard and fast camera specs and features
•14-bit conversion
•3.9FPS unlimited burst rate with JPEG using UDMA CF card, or 14 RAW (standard CF card is 78 JPEG, 13 RAW
•Four-channel readout that's 2.2x faster than the 5D
•Lens peripheral illumination correction, like 50D, but better supposedly
•15-point auto-focus
•Creative auto mode, also like 50D
•Auto-lighting optimiser
•Three levels of noise reduction that kicks in above 800
•RAW, sRAW1 (10MP), sRAW2 (5MP)
•Three-inch, 920,00 dot-screen
•New and improved battery (incompatible with old one) that delivers 850 shots or 1.5 hours of video
•150,000 cycle shutter
•Magnesium alloy body
•NO built-in flash BTW
Yeah, this is what you've been aching for, especially if it delivers the performance it promises. It'll be $US2700 for the body or $US3500 with the 24-105mm kit lens, out in November.
AU:Just got the local release - pricing still TBC in Australia, and release will be December.
Sydney, 17 September 2008: Canon Australia today announced the highly-anticipated EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera, successor to Canon's acclaimed EOS 5D. The new model sets the benchmark in full-frame Digital SLR cameras and is perfect for enthusiasts and professional photographers seeking unrivalled image quality and high performance.
The EOS 5D Mark II boasts a range of new features, enabling users to take their photography to unprecedented levels, including Live View movies in Full High Definition (HD) and increased ISO capabilities to an incredible range of 50-25600.
Packed with Canon's core technologies, the EOS 5D Mark II ensures Canon users continue to achieve the superior quality and creative control that they have become accustomed to with the popular predecessor model.
"Canon is pleased to announce the new EOS 5D Mark II, developed to push the boundaries of creative photography even further," states Chris Macleod, Brand Manager - EOS, Consumer Imaging Products Group, Canon Australia. "Canon's impressive 21.1 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, coupled with Live View Movies in Full HD and wider ISO capabilities, enables Canon to continually bring incredible performance to photographers."
Full Frame for Fine Detail and High Image Quality
Central to the EOS 5D Mark II's outstanding image quality is its high resolution 35mm full-frame, 21.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. In addition, 14-bit A/D conversion results in finer tonal gradation.
The EOS 5D Mark II offers the widest ISO speed range of any EOS digital camera, with a standard range of 100-6400, which can be extended to an incredible 50-25600 with ISO expansion (three stops more than its predecessor). Like never before, photographers are now able to capture incredible subject detail in extremely low light conditions. In addition, precise, low noise images can be achieved using the low ISO speeds - a must for professionals and high end enthusiasts who are producing large detailed images.
The EOS 5D Mark II also features Canon's newly developed DiG!C 4 Image Processor, recently announced in Canon's new EOS 50D. Building on DiG!C III's high-speed rendering of fine detail and natural colour reproduction, DiG!C 4 provides even faster signal processing. This detailed processing of large-volume data at extremely high speed satisfies professional demands for exceptional image quality and responsiveness in any shooting situation.
New Features to Expand Shooting Possibilities
The EOS 5D Mark II features Live View movies and boasts an industry first with Full HD recording quality. Canon incorporated this feature in response to photographer's demands for a camera that could shoot both stills and video in High Definition. In any shooting mode users can capture still photos and movies in Full HD quality or standard TV quality (VGA), making this the ideal camera for photographers who need to efficiently capture stills and movies without compromising on quality.
Like other Canon DSLR models, the EOS 5D Mark II features Live View shooting with Auto Focus capabilities. This allows photographers to preview images in real time on the 3.0-inch VGA LCD monitor with 920,000 dots for greater flexibility and creative composition. Similar to the recently announced EOS 50D, the EOS 5D Mark II also features live Face Detection mode in Live View shooting. By distinguishing human faces in each shot and adjusting the focus and exposure accordingly, Live Face Detection allows photographers to ensure their subjects are captured clearly and accurately.
Compatible with Canon's range of EF lenses (excluding EF-S lenses), the EOS 5D Mark II is the camera for serious enthusiasts and professional photographers who to take their photography further with no limitations.
Canon Launches New High-Performance Wide Angle Lens
To support its extensive EOS system, Canon has also announced a new high-grade, fast, wide angle lens for professional photographers, the EF24mm f/1.4L II USM (successor to the EF24mm f/1.4L USM). The new lens is the brightest large diameter f/1.4 high-performance wide-angle L lens in the 24mm class. Improvements have been made in the periphery area of the lens, a requirement brought about from the rapid advancement of high resolution sensors available in EOS DSLRs. The circular aperture in the new EF24mm f/1.4L II USM produces beautiful blur effects and the also offers high resistance to dust and water droplets.
The Perfect DSLR Companion - the PowerShot G10
Canon also welcomed the PowerShot G10 to its second half 2008 line-up. Incorporating DSLR capabilities into a compact body, the PowerShot G10 makes the ideal companion to the EOS 5D Mark II. An upgrade from the highly acclaimed G9, the PowerShot G10 features Canon's new DiG!C 4 Image Processor, new 28mm wide lens and increased megapixels while retaining the prized RAW format mode. Canon's PowerShot G10 will impress professionals or photo enthusiasts looking to support their DSLR gear with a more portable option.
The EOS 5D Mark II body will be available in Body Only (RRP TBC), and as a Premium Kit with the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens (RRP $TBC). These kits will all be available from December 2008 through Canon dealers nationally. For more information customers can contact Canon on 1800 021 167, or visit the website at canon.com.au.

"It'll be $2700 for the body or $3500 with the 24-105mm kit lens, ..."
Correction, guys, come-on, the 24-105L is $1059 by itself, with "L" being a "pro" lens...not a "kit" lens which means "Throw-away-plastic-lenses".
The 5D is a full-frame camera and will make nice use of the 24mm wide in that lens, which is about as wide as you can go without any extra work.
loslosbaby

Finally! All these years of holding off on buying the 5D and it's in the price range I have saved up for (plus the price of the vert grip and L bracket). I can now finally stop shooting 35 film to get full frame! I'm sure I will still feel like going through a roll or two of PAN-F or Velvia for old times sake or at least until the bricks in my fridge are gone.
I may actually get it with the kit lens. Been looking for something in that focal length range as a "street" lens. As loslosbaby pointed out it is $250 less if you buy it with the kit as opposed to buying it separately.
@iomatic: I was thinking the same thing. From the pictures I think there is a chance there may be some weather sealing but it's probably wishful thinking.

Two things to remember about the video recording.
If you can't attach a directional mic, then the fact that it records in stereo is worth nothing. You'd be far better off with one channel of sound, and the ability to attach a directional mic. Otherwise all you get is stereo atmos and lots of camera noise - not so good for voices, and not a match for hi-res pictures.
Picture quality on video is unlikely to rival a decent HD video camera. Too many compromises made with the still CCD for that.
I'd be happy to be proved wrong on both these points.

I was thinking of getting a vixia or something just to shoot small clips to tie my stills together on a DVD presentation. This will be perfect for doing just that. You know, I realize that built-in flashes pretty much suck, but they can also be really handy to have when you need just a bit of fill. It's really disappointing to me that Canon didn't add a built-in (as on the Nikon D700). There are times that I want to just attach a versatile zoom lens and carry the camera around without having to also tote an external strobe. Sigh.

I took a look at the specs on the canonusa web site and am somewhat confused. They confirm the obvious for a camera of this level, that it has a full frame sensor; however they then indicate that it has a 1.6 effective multiplier, as with the smaller sensor models. I'm hoping that this is just an erroneous oversight.

No weather sealing has sealed the deal for me. I will either buy a 5D MK1 and save money (More megapixels mean nothing really) the other features are nice, but not for that price. Or research a good weather sealed Nikon.

So I guess I'm one of the only unhappy fools. My 1DsMarkIII just took a major hit on the resale value. Why oh why did Canon chip directly into their 1D line like this?
On the bright side, now we can see superhigh megadetail in those mediocre shots of our pets & stuff

The lack of information re the 'new' sensor is disconcerting. The PR says it's the same as the flagship 1ds3, which means it doesn't have the gapless microlenses that the 50d has. If this is true...boo

5D only does 30 fps. D90 does 24 fps at 720p. If they can only delivery 0-60 fps at 1080p then you can start to make movies with it. Just 24 fps at 1080p would be a good start.

No seriously, how large will one image file be? Anyone have an estimate based on 5d Mark I?

@gre9del:
and
squeaky toy of the whatever...
Glad about the mic. But the video output is likely to be much more compromised than people are assuming - it's not just a question of multiplying the sensor's still capacity by 29.77 (or 25, as we say in Europe and Australia).
The market for the stills bit of the camera is pro-sumer. Probably not true of the video bit.
As said, glad if I'm proved wrong again.

@photophile: Who cares about the pixels. Shooting video using EF lenses is the major factor here. If I were shooting using a standard definition XL2 and compare it to a Sony Handycam HD, I would still get better creative quality out of the XL2.

Or based on a more comparable size I guess.

@ShriHumphrey: Actually my hunch was right. This body does have weather sealing (per dpreview). The way the flash mount was situated is what hinted at the possibility of weather sealing. It is designed to work with the weather sealing of the 580EX II flash.

I hope video in D-SLRs dies a very quick and horrible death and that goes for the D90 as well.
It's pointless. Now we're going to have microphone wars, and then the flash hot shoes are going to get complicated because they'll stick contacts on them to allow shotgun-mics to "improve the sound" blah blah blah.
At a basic level, even the ergonomics of a D-SLR are wrong for a video camera. Pretend anyone is going to hold it up and record 90 minutes of video. Bring on the next round of useless feature creep and let cameras be cameras.

This is very exciting news for me... and I'm a Nikon shooter! Maybe it's wishful thinking this early on, but I'm hoping the competitive pricing of the 5D Mark II will force Nikon to lower prices on the D700. Even though the D700 is more expensive, I'd still want it over the 5D Mark II because of its 51 AF assists, built in flash commander for remote strobes (I don't need triggers because I'm not that far along yet), and Nikon's attention to ergonomics which you can't appreciate unless you've shot with both. I can't wait to check out the 5D Mark II though which I'm sure will be a fun camera to shoot with.

I believe Sony already has a HD cam out with CMOS sensors by they way...3 of them over 3 CCD...not as good in low light though, but a nice image when well lit.
I've been shooting on my 5D for about 2 and half years so this is good news. Sold my backup 30D and now just can't decide if I'll trade in my current 5D for a 50D or have a 5D backup to my MKII...

Don't like the back, reminds me too much of my first D30. Wish their higher-end "prosumer" cameras would borrow more from the 1Ds line.
