Camera Nerd Puzzle: WTF Is the Nikon D60 'Black Gold' Edition?
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 10:30 AM on September 13, 2008
The folks at Nikon Rumours are puzzling over a new product SKU appearing on inventory lists, a Nikon D60 body only that lists for US$649.99, US$50 more than the standard D60. As you can see in the listings, it's named "Black Gold," utilising all two of Nikon's favourite colours. We don't know what it is, but maybe you do. Frankly, we're kinda just relieved it's not White Gold. [Nikon Rumors]

It's like the fabled Maltese Falcon, a golden bird encrusted with jewels that Malta paid as a tribute to the King of Spain, his way of reminding them of his sovereignty over the small Mediterranean island. On its journey from Malta to the Spanish shores, the boat carrying the falcon was attacked and the bird vanished, showing up years later for sale on the black market. It has changed hands many times since, and now has supposedly been covered with a coating of black enamel to mask its true value.
So I guess it would be a really good camera that looked like a worthless piece of junk to the casual observer.

Perhaps the body is made of solid gold?

A D60 with Gold trim? Real gold? Nah.

Maybe this is in conjunction with the designer label Diesel? I know they have a line out called "Black Gold" and with the price they sell that stuff for I wouldn't be surprised if they tried selling a fashionized camera as an accessory.

@nuclearchinchila: I love Black Gold even though I can't afford it, but a conservative Japanese camera company co-designing with the edgiest Italian fashion label? That's a bit far.

black gold being petroleum- it means its an entirely plastic body.

Black gold, or "midnight gold" is a metal finish with multiple layers so it appears very dark, except under direct light when it reflects a gold-ish patina. Similar to pearl paint on cars.

It's obvious that it has a crude oil finish smeared on the body of the camera instead of paint. Just don't use it when you're wearing light colored clothes, and you might want to hold it with a paper towel. Your call.

i think it is like a d40x but because it is a d60 it is a black gold edition, so i might have more mega pixels and thats it.

Goldfinger just told me that Black Gold is most likely a cosmetic design for the camera body. ..maybe with extra characters, it could have been listed Black & Gold D60 ... but who uses special characters nowadays?

It's a typo. It's supposed to be "...BLACK, OLD BODY..." There is a body redesign coming that hasn't hit yet, and this SKU is for the updated sensor in the old body style.
And yes, I totally made that all up.
