Build Your Own Linksys WRT54GL Wi-Fi Monster Truck
Posted by Sean Fallon at 5:00 AM on September 20, 2008
If you love R/C toys, this Wi-Fi router monster truck is definitely a project worth tackling. In a nutshell, a guy named Jonathan Bennet managed to rig a very hackable Linksys WRT54GL router to a $US5 R/C monster truck so that it could be driven via the internet from up to 500 meters (1640 feet) away. Although not designed to be a how-to guide, there is more than enough information on the project page for someone with some knowledge to put one together at home. would be nicer if it was a cell phone instead of a router. then u just dial in like the Jackal and activate the zoom scope on the 50 caliber....oh wait n/m we're making a r/c truck.

It'd be cool if it could drive around like a roomba, trying to auto connect to the next nearest wifi when it got out of range, reconnect to the controller and keep on going. Could probably make it around most neighborhoods.

Put this on one of those RC cars with wheels bigger than the body so it can't get flipped over. Mount solar panels to recharge in the sun, and make this generally waterproof and you can micro-wardrive forever.

@discounteggroll: Kinda doubt that enough people would be willing to do all the work building the car for that to happen.

... Maybe give it a little GPS to allow it to give me the last known position. Just in case I lose it.

I agree. Have it report back via the internet and give it the capability of finding the nearest open AP. Maybe even allow you to store a list of nearby APs' WEP/WPA keys.
I'd build one of these and stick a high-gain omni on it and I could likely drive until the battery gave out in most cities!

Curves: Oh damn, thats my router.
I have two WRT54GLs, and 1 WRT54G (bought before I knew any better).
1 GL is my main router, the other GL and the G are both bridges.
/The GLs were easy as pie to stick dd-wrt on, the G was a pain in the butt, I want it to die so I can get another GL :D

@urbanturban666: No, I need another cam to add to my site, JerseyCam, and I could use a network cam b/c I have a large supply of cat5 cable.

I'm currently building something very similar.... i think i am going to be installing a cellphone with a data connection so i will be able to drive it from anywhere i have internet connection. mine will have a fit-pc installed. just waiting for the 25th so i can order the fit-pc slim. can't wait. i'll be sure to send pictures in to gizmodo.
