Brits Take Care of a Downed Transport Plane by Blowing it Up
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:00 AM on September 3, 2008
How do you get rid of a gigantic downed transport plane? Well, you could take it apart piece by piece or move it to a junkyard. Or, if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, you could blow it the hell up. Guess which option the UK Royal Air Force chose?
The aircraft, which was carrying six crew and 58 passengers, veered off the runway after being hit by two improvised explosive devices, catching fire on its badly damaged port wing. Three people suffered minor injuries on evacuating the stricken transport, which was subsequently "deemed unrecoverable due to operational constraints", according to a Board of Inquiry investigation into the mishap.
The aircraft, a C-130J transport plane, is worth an estimated US$82 million when in a working, non-blowed-up condition. [Danger Room via FlightGlobal]

@Strong Arm: They actually couldn't pay for the parts for salvage. As military components, they are usually illegal or highly regulated to own/posses. They would have to be salvaged by a military crew or a crew supervised heavily by the military. Then each part would have to be documented through multiple destructions. The scrap that they would be allowed to keep in the end could not equal what it would cost to attempt to salvage.

This post fails to mention that the plane is IN IRAQ! One should probably be able to gather as much from the reference to the IED, but still - that wasn't a detail important enough to put in the post?

They should have called the 447 Expeditionary Force. They blew one up in July.

@Strong Arm: Who are you going to pay to salvage an aircraft in a war zone?
If the military that paid for the plane deems it unfit to do so you think sending a CONTRACTOR in will go much better?
You first.

Why not just sell it to some private parts company, i am sure they would pay a fair amount for it. Urgh..

That kind of thing happens more than you'd think. Cheaper(!) to blow it up than to extract and reuse/rebuild.

Ahh, how professional. And how very British. Seriously guys, that's how a lot of us sound. We're not the tea drinking, crumpet eating nancypants most of you think we are, most of us are just loudmouthed yobs.

@Strong Arm: As TFA said that they couldn't salvage anything because of time constraints, and because they probably didn't want, say, jet fuel in the hands of the same people that whacked their plane to begin with, they were (air)forced* to do something totally sweet for the sake of, er.... national security? Not because it's awesome or anything, I swear! *Worst pun ever. Sorry.

@Strong Arm:
Lets take the time to take it apart and hold a public auction for all the parts in the middle of a warzone teeming with insurgents who have already disabled the aircraft at that location with BOMBS. We all know there are scores of people over there with nothing better to do but take pictures and manage hundreds of eBay auctions. Brilliant.

Ahhh... I don't blame them. Blowing stuff up is MUCH more fun than salvaging it. Anyone notice the engine flying with the mostly intact propeller?

@XanderCrews: It was mentioned in the article it was linked from. From said article, ""The aircraft was destroyed by coalition forces the day after after sustaining heavy damage in an incident while landing at a remote site in Iraq's Maysaan province on 12 February 2007."

Yeah, yeah, I know, we will send a team out there with clipboards and manifests to properly document each part, write down the serial number, put it in a bin and send it to the reclamation dept. at the pentagon. Oh yeah and we will tell them they are ordered not to die or get blown up untill they are completely finished filling out all the forms in triplicate.

@Alfonzo: Well, the chances of a English plane falling into enemy hands while in England is very low. As for the pieces, I am sure they were summarilly gathered by the locals to be used in a variety of ways. You know how much people in America pay for a plane propeller fan? They can make one for free.

Er, I forgot to mention they lost two C-130 aircraft in Iraq. Both were destroyed by the RAF.

In the USAF's defense, they weren't trying to blow up their C-130 to nothing but little pieces. Just enough to break it up and then truck it off. While the Brits just went for stuffing as much explosives as they could find in the aircraft and then blowing it to high hell! Oh, and just so you all know the Brits lost two C-130 aircraft in 2007. This one on the 12 of Feb, and another one on August 23rd! So there is possibly another video out there!
Then again, this first video doesn't look very formal (IE, no mention of the unit that did this job). Looks like some Brit with his own personal video camera. While the USAF video was documented with pictures, video that ultimately looks more professional. So maybe there is no second video because some Brit didn't have a video camera!
