BREAKING: Tamagotchi Still Exists, Has Evolved Colour

Undoubtedly reopening the emotional wounds of millions of bereaved Millennials across the world, Tamagotchi has come back from the dead (they always do!) with a familiar line of life support simulators. This time, though, they come in colour, presumably to make the short, hungry, futile lives of those unfortunate little mutants that much more real to impressionable children. It remains to be seen if, 12 years later, today's young children, many of whom already (and inexplicably) have a mobile phone and/or iPod, will take to the 'Gotch. Japan only for now, but if and when they arrive in the US expect a price of around $US50. Enjoy some exciting, action-packed screenshots after the jump. [UberGizmo via Inventorspot]

I still sell a ton of batteries to parents who's little kid's Tamagotchi is schpilkis is it's genectegazoink.

This must be stopped! Playing with Tamagotchi as a kid leads to playing The Sims as an adult. When will the madness end? :)

They should have an accelerometer in these things. That way, I can shake up my Tamagotchi to punish it.

The way technology has evolved since Tamagotchi was last around, do they really expect people to be into this still, or kids to even like this now that we have Nintendo DS's and iPhones?

@Tweak: I agree. If anything the company should put some focus on a REAL Tamagotchi iPhone app. because the iGotchi app is pitiful.

I have my original in a box..haven't put a battery back in it. It was certainly more interesting than class, but not worth the trouble otherwise.

@raptorrapture: Back in the day I had a Pikachu pocket toy that had a pedometer(not QUITE an accelerometer) built in, and that's how you earned points to feed him, because of the "electricity" you built up by walking around. And it was color, too, and this was like, 1999 or maybe 2000...
Anyhow, point is, you'd shake it and it would get Pikachu all excited.

i had a pikachu tomogotchi knock-off back in the day...it was in color...not full color, just red, black, and yellow...what more could you want for $1.99 from the bargain bin at walgreens? also it had a pedometer/shaking interface that was sorta fun...

I abused real animals when I was younger. tamagotchi's never had a chance in my care.
