Blue 8GB Zune Confirmed Along with a Tonne of New Features
Posted by Jack Loftus at 9:00 AM on September 8, 2008
A cool new blue Zune was spotted at Fry's today, complete with some new features. The first, "Device to Cloud," allows users to access wireless hotspots to update music collections, browse Zune Marketplace, refresh Channels (another feature), exchange favourites, and buy tagged FM songs. "Channels" are custom stations that deliver "personalised playlists" to the Zune, and the cleverly named "Games" feature is, well, about games. Rumour is a few might even come preloaded on this blue Zune. Lastly, the "Buy From FM" feature lets you listen to FM radio stations and tag the songs purchase when you sync with a PC. Full specs and other details down below.

@mordecaidrake: There won't be an iPod killer anytime soon since too many people are entrenched in the product. Some day Apple will run out of new ideas (sooner rather than later it seems) and when there are nothing but color updates year over year they will eventually go south. Until that day though there will be people who want nothing to do with iPod for one reason or another (mine is unlimited ala-carte music for one low price, 99 cents a song FTL.) But iPod will still be king for a while, even while most other manufacturers have at least one feature that is better.

I like the idea of tagging the songs that you hear on FM radio and then buying them later. Although there is one flaw to this feature:
Everything on the radio is CRAP!
I guess I'm stickin' to my iPod.

@Ken_Darrow: Well, some HD radio stations just got iTunes tagging and there's an "iTunes Song of the Day" commercial that plays each day on 101.3 Indie each weekday, so I'm guessing that at least SOME iPod users listen to the radio in the digital age (or else, Apple's just wasting their money on ads, too).
That was all sarcasm. Of course people listen to FM radio, silly! Even if it's only to connect to the television in the gym.

Microsoft is proving the Zune as a powerful device. No one on here can say that they wouldn't LOVE to have many of these features on the iPod (including myself). I'm a music person first when it comes to my DAPs. That said: Come on, Apple. Give me some awesome MUSIC features! The song sharing in and of itself is totally awesome and would be an awesome feature for them to steal/borrow from Zune.
On the other hand, it's interesting that Zune isn't trying to compete with the iPod by holding "Make Big Announcement" Events. I did read on Cnet that a MS spokesperson confirmed that the features would be rolled out over the period of weeks. I wonder why they aren't trying to make a big splash with an hige event like Apple. Or perhaps they will. Who knows? (But the cats out of the bag now.
Also, is the "requirements" section empty because it's going to be Mac-compatible? :-)

@FredicvsMaximvs:
Depends on how ya want to share and how you want to experience your music. You can subscribe to a Zune Pass (unlimited music subscription for $15/month) and sharing really opens up. You can subscribe to friend feeds, otherwise known as Zune Cards (8 favorite songs, 8 most recently played, 8 most played artists for the month). Or you can share songs (comes with the 3 plays rule, a song/playlist will stay with you until you play it your third time) personally with someone else with a Zune.

@snitch29: I would agree that Mac support is necessary. It would show that Microsoft is trying to reach to Mac users. As it is, it is a very anti-Apple product.
One thing they could do is make it Linux compatible. That would be a first for this type of product.

Honestly, if there were mac support, I would probably buy a Zune. I used one at Best Buy and really dug the interface. But then a Geek Squad employee tried to charge me pair the display model and told me if I didn't then it would break and Microsoft's warranty just wouldn't cover accidental display model damage! ;)

There will never be Zune support for mac users, Never, this is the last thing in microsoft's mind right now, why???? cause why wold they make it compatible so 1/2 of the customers can be mac users who also run back to itunes and grab there tunes???? The zune is more aim at the very few antiapple fanboys, and that # really little, that's why they only manage to ship 2 million unit's in about 2 years. People just want a PMP that works and that if something goes wrong, you could get it swap with a new one over the counter, that's why i prefer the iPod, i just don't have the time to ship things back and forth and waiting weeks for a replacement

What more do you people want? Everyone complained about how wi-fi was a waste, and now there are actual FEATURES that make use of the hardware!
@vgart: Radio is honestly the best thing about the Zune (and Sansa, Zen, etc.). It is unfathomable that Apple has not yet been called out for continuing to leave that feature out. I have a flash Zune and have to be choosy about which songs I put on there - as a result, sometimes I just want to listen to radio (and the reception is pretty good). If I didn't have radio, how would I keep up to date with new songs? Now I can TAG them!
@MrHaroHaro: Are you blue colorblind or something? Looks perfectly fine to me.
@BiZarRroBALlmeR: Price?
Seriously, I'm sick of this Zune bashing from people who clearly have never used one. These features might not be mindblowing, but they are indeed impressive additions that should alleviate any doubts the Zune Guy had about Microsoft's dedication to the project. Also, we have to keep in mind that it's all free for every Zune owner - essentially we just keep getting more than what we paid for, which can never be a bad thing.

@drewkkake: Terrific post, and excellent points. I don't quite understand the need to bash a consumer product that people haven't used. An objective comparison of where the Zune was two years ago and where it is now shows that it's a far better device and a much better value. And, as you said, if you bought the Zune 30 (especially at $99, like many of us did), you continue to come up roses.
I'm excited about the integrated Zune Marketplace (can I subscribed or update podcasts from there? Wouldn't that be something?) and the updated games features. The Zune continues to impress.

I truly love these Zune posts. The short attention spans of Apple Fanboys assure that by the bottom of the comments section, the people that actually should be commenting on this story are commenting.
I cant wait for native support for Zune games. Ive been playing quite a few of them on www.zuneboards.com and they are all fantastic. Theres so much potential in XNA games, and the attachment and versioning of XBOX Live games to Zune games. It will be a few years, but soon the Zune will mold into a viable gaming platform.
What i was really hoping for were 640x480 screen on the 120 and video out on the 8/16. I could really use a beater flash player, which i could hook up into my car's video in port. The 80 works, but sometimes, i would prefer something smaller.
And im really hoping for a WM Zune client. That would basically be a replacement for the 8/16 option.

I'm sick of people saying the Zune is so good. The Zune sucks, people only like it because they are losers that want to "go against the trend" and get an iPod. On a more objective note, the interface is horrid and is a pain to use along with the software. Probably one of the worst purchases I have ever made. Not to mention the Zune is just plain ugly (the blue is a little better though). Microsoft, stick to making reliable video game consoles, o wait you can't do that either. Then stick with your operating syste...wait nope. Wow I just realized that Microsoft has failed miserable in the past few years. The 360 sucks (the games are the only thinging keeping that piece of crap afloat), the Zune only sells a fraction of what Apple sells for iPods, and Vista had to be one of the most hyped-up flops in software history. Keep up the good work Microsoft!!

Bye bye ipod. I currently have a zune 8gig and an ipod nano 2nd gen (for running with nike+). My wife also has an ipod classic. She's been bothering me to get a new Zune so I can give her my old one. She's sick and tired of Apple's bullshait and loves the zune. I greatly enjoy listening to NPR live on FM while riding the train in the morning, or if they're not doing it for me, I listen to my music or watch a movie I stored. These new features will prompt me to buy one of the 120 units, and in turn my wife will get a 'new' zune to replace her crappy ipod. Apple better announce something big, or else they're getting the boot in this household.

What's truly unfortunate about the FM radio is that, while it's nice to have, FM radio is complete fucking shit. So many ads, so many repeated songs, I can honestly say that I will never use an FM radio ever again. That said, iPods should still have them. Some people actually like this complete fucking shit. With the exception of the aforementioned NPR, it's a wasteland out there.
@ab3: I have to disagree on the interface. I actually think that it's not bad. My only complaint about it is that gib romper room font that they use on the home display. It shouldn't be so large that a few menu items run off the display. Another problem is that they don't seem to change contrast with the background you set.
Other than that, I found the device's interface pretty fluid and easy to use. Once you get the hang of the twist, it's a comfy transition. Another thing that the Zune has that the iPod is in serious need of is a reassuring mount and dismount. You don't have to worry about prematurely disconnecting your Zune, because it won't corrupt like an iPod can (eventually if you do it too often). It's pretty reassuring.
However, the tradeoff with this is no external disk support, and no TRUE manual syncing. I hate the fact that I can't manage the content on the Zune like I can on the iPod. I can't rename tracks and rearrange data.
The software is not bad, but I personally find it ugly. The themes available are not my cup o' tea, but it's livable. I wish Microsoft just threw in a feature with their UIX architecture that allowed me to just set my own background "out-of-the-box".
I think it still has a long way to go before it can make me consider it again, but so far it's a solid offer compared to the likes of SanDisk and Creative.

@ab3: For me, navigating through the Zune interface is logical and pain-free.
I came upon owning a Zune because of three things:
1. Hardware - This thing is rock solid. I've dropped it plenty of times and there's nothing but a small scratch near the top-right corner. Plus, the screens on the new, second gen, Zunes are amazing.
2. Not iTunes - Pain in the ass. Even the Zune 1.0 software handled better than iTunes. And the damn thing couldn't edit metadata.
3. Timing - I was a little pissed with my iPod Nano (1st Gen) bending in the center. The battery life sucked. Honestly.. I couldn't get more than 3 hours. MS came out with the Zune right when I was in the market for a new player, and they got my vote.
Something that disappointed me with the Zune was that it is what it is. It's a music player. It didn't have those little neat surprises that Apple built into its iPods. Maybe I had followed it so closely that I wasn't surprised by anything, but it did everything well.
Now, my Zune 30 is updated into a new firmware, and it looks like there's a new version on the way. The Zune software is miles ahead of where it started. It's honestly gone from my least favorite part of the Zune to the feature that I can't live without. WMP11 and Songbird are nice, but damn Zune's got a nice handle on things now.

Great addition to a great device. I love my White 30GB Zune and my BF loves his Black 8GB. I truely do love the UI on the device. Games are an awesome addition, I hope there becomes a store on the marketplace for them.
The only negativity right now is the Software on our computers tends to hog the CPU. Any update that tamed this would really make me like Zune 100%.

@Ken_Darrow: Uhh Device Cloud, you can Browse the Zune Marketplace and BUY songs you tagged via the FM Radio. Not interesting???? Can the god iPhone do that? F no. Not even the iPod Touch can do that either.

Whoa those ideas sound original! Haha just kidding. I have gained respect for the Zune when they re-released it. But, the iPods are still on top.

@nXt: Because you said FM radio. What normal human being can stand to listen to FM radio for more than 30 min. By the time I force myself to go through the 8th commercial I'm ready to up chuck. FM radio.... so so old... Pandora is the way to go.... Simplify is simply killer also...

@Ken_Darrow: A large amount of people listen to FM radio. You'd be surprised. Remember, we (meaning: myself included) tend to think inside of our own little worlds. The average person doesn't read tech blogs and have never heard of Pandora or Grooveshark, etc.
Top 40 is the biggest selling music largely due to radio sales. Apple uses Coldplay and U2 in their television ads because it's what so many people like. Apple has commercials on FM radio stations (like Kiss 100 in LA) because that's where the listeners are. If I don't necessarily like much Top 40 music/radio stations, so what? I'm not a good representation of most of the world. However, the FM radio feature is very useful to most. Remember that Katy Perry of "I Kissed a Girl" fame and The Pussycat Dolls are in the Top Selling acts in the iTunes Store right now. They are FM radio superstars!
P.S. It's actually even useful for those who don't listen to mainstream music, also. I can't count how many times I'm listening to my college station's somewhat obscure music and think "Who the heck is that? I want that song."

@nXt: Incorrect, iPod touch and iPhone users through the Last.FM app can create radio stations based on an artist - it creates a playlist of similar artists (based on the style/genre of that artist you created) and allows you to tag and download music direct through iTunes) from the "cloud" via WiFi or 3G on your iPhone.

@Jander:
Just to clear that up, it's ZunePass is an even better deal because you can share it among 3 Zunes so it works out to $5/month per Zune. I'm a "Zune Broker" for quite a few of my friends, and charge them $6 a month...and most pay for an entire year in advance = free loan + profit for me!
It would be nice if Music Videos were added to the Pass program, however...

@RedwoodFlyer:
Ah yeah, one of the better aspects of the Pass that not many know about. You can share the cost, and distribute the unlimited goodness down three ways. It was a year in till I tried the Pass, and discovered I could use it on up to three computers and three Zunes, so I let some members of my family use it on their computers. That sold a couple Zunes right there. The Pass is fantastic for families, great for friends who want to share the cost and benefit from the service. Cool thing about the Zune service is it ends up becoming inclusive, kind of like how cell plans work (unlimited calling between users of the same network).
Everybody made fun of the ol' Welcome to the social phrase and wifi sharing when the Zune first came out, and it *was* stupid if that was all it had been, but the Zune team had far more in mind than passing temporary songs to random users, tip of the iceberg now that I've seen what they've done two years in, with the Social site, subscribing to friend feeds, sharing Passes, and now sharing favorite tracks from your Zune from anywhere from the cloud. That's damn cool.
Come to find out, that Welcome to the Social tagline was serious. It really was a welcome mat to a bigger idea. And yeah, hope video makes it on the Pass too, think it'll work well with video actually.

@videoCWK: Mac support?? Microsoft doesn't even support their own feaking OS'...i'm sure this thing still doesn't have support for the x64 versions of XP and server 2003.

@leaverus: iTunes isnt supported before 10.3 anymore. That was released in 2003.
xp64 was a failure of a consumer OS for Microsoft, and Server 2003 is extremely old. Sometimes, you just have to let go.

The blue Zune looks pretty nice. I didn't really like the old blue 2G nanos so if Apple goes back to that color blue, I'll end up buying the Blue Zune 8gb. Plus I like listening to the radio and the idea of wireless synching.

@Jander: Dude I have to agree with Mr.Haro; it looks like plastic trash... an Easter Shit Brick if you will.
On the software side, sure a lot of the features encourage "sharing," but first you have to find people who own the device and be willing to pay for any subscription service. Truth be told people who buy pmp's other than iPods tend to be of the illegally downloaded variety.
And to the folks who've mentioned xm/sirius radio tagging for iTunes/iPod, I think that's more xm/sirius appealing to iTunes owners than the other way around.

Device to Cloud, Buy From FM (in conjuction with the ZunePass), and Channels. Damn, that's pretty sweet. Good thing those features will be free and available for my 30GB Zune.
How do iPods update their firmware to the latest features? ;p

I am seriously impressed with these new features! I was planning on buying a new iPod when Apple releases the new one on the 9th, but now I may actually have a tough decision on my hands! Besides, I am loving that blue! It matches my car :D
I really hope iTunes 8.0 includes a subscription like the Zune Pass. I think that feature will make or break the deal for me!
I guess we will see come September 9th! ;D
