BlackBerry Javelin Sells for $17,000 on eBay
Posted by Mark Wilson at 7:40 AM on September 18, 2008
We're anxious to check out the BlackBerry Javelin, don't get us wrong. But even we have our limits. Like, we wouldn't pay $US17,100 for the thing. Maybe $US16,500. But anything over $US16,800? That's just nuts. [eBay via CrackBerry]

but since it was bid up by 2 people with 0 feedback this was a prank... or whatever you may call it... maybe it was some RIM employees who posted it and bid on it to do their own viral advertising

Well my answer would have been, "I'm rich bitch!". And of course, our Future President created it. ;)

No problem. But really, you're making me blush. I'm just an average guy with a basic understanding of lot's of thing. And it seemed Mr_Maze wasn't understanding why someone would pay so much for something and I didn't think he would take "Because they really wanted it." as an answer.

Might be a website trying to buy it for the traffic they'd receive for their exclusive first review? Didn't CrackBerry do that with the Curve?

@Mr_Maze:
K, I'll try. Well see, when something is really important to someone they have to make a decision as to how much they are willing to spend to obtain it. For example I really wanted one of those bowling balls with a skull in it but most were selling for about $100. I didn't want to spend more than $80 so I kept getting outbid. Finally I bid on one and got it for $78. In this case this person was willing to spend up to $17,000 (or maybe even more) on this item. It's kind of the whole idea ebay is based on.
Hope that helps. :)

@Mr_Maze: Someone, anyone, please, explain why you would pay $17,130 for a Blackberry. Because John McCain invented it?

atually, if you look at the bid history, you can see that the winning bidder and someone else with 0 feedback basically bid the phone up to that amount.
Obviously those two are prank bidders. I'll bet the seller will put the phone back up for auction in a few days.

@Mr_Maze: It could be RIM themselves. $17k to find out who this person is. Fire them, they'll actually save money by not having this guy working.

It's those Nigerians. You send the phone to them, they send you a USPS Cashier's Check after they received it. Very legit. /end sarcasm

Nothing "sells" anywhere until cash and merchandise exchange hands and the deal is done. This Blackberry has not, and likely will not "sell" for anywhere near that amount.
Come on Giz, you know how the Bay works. These ridic bids are all from bored kids. If there were a story every time someone bid a silly amount on a piece of tech, there'd be no room for Apple stories. Don't get all Enquirer on us.

@seamustry: Thank you. I was less impressed by the $17,000.00 and more impressed by the balls of the guy charging $30 shipping on top.
Relax guys, this whole auction is moot, cuz no one met the reserve. (ba-doom tsh!)
